Der Vortrag möchte den funktionalen Zusammenhang von Nacktheit und Imagination untersuchen und aufzeigen, wie innerhalb einer Kultur der Bekleidung das Begehren, unter den Textilien den nackten Körper zu erblicken, als Urszene des Ästhetischen entworfen wird.
In einem ersten Teil werden ausgehend von verschiedenen Kulturtheorien (u.a. Freud und Descola) theoretische Zugänge zur Nacktheit entwickelt, die die Nacktheit als Figuration von ‚Natur‘ in den Blick nehmen und rekonstruieren, inwiefern dabei diese nackte Natur einer bekleideten Kultur gegenübergestellt wird.
Der zweite Teil verfolgt diese theoretischen Zusammenhänge an ausgewählten Beispielen aus der Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte des nackten Körpers: zunächst bei Ovid im antiken Mythos, wo bereits die Gegensätzlichkeit von Nacktheit und Imagination angelegt ist, und dann mit Blick auf das 18. Jahrhundert und Johann Joachim Winckelmann im Besonderen. Dabei zeigen sich in Winckelmanns Texten (Gedanken über die Nachahmung; Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums) zwei verschiedene Konzeptionen der Nacktheit, die in der Gegenüberstellung von Natur und Kunst die Dichotomie von Natur und Kultur hervortreiben.

This talk wants to examine the relationship between nudity and imagination and show how within a culture of clothing the desire to glimpse the naked body under textiles is designed as a primal scene of the aesthetic.
In the first part, theoretical approaches to nakedness are developed based on various cultural theories (including Freud and Descola) that focus on nakedness as a figuration of 'nature' and reconstruct the extent to which this naked nature is thereby juxtaposed with a clothed culture.
The second part traces these theoretical correlations through selected examples from the literary and cultural history of the naked body: first with Ovid in the ancient myth, where the opposition of nakedness and imagination is already laid out, and then with a view to the 18th century and Johann Joachim Winckelmann in particular. In Winckelmann's texts (Gedanken über die Nachahmung; Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums) two different conceptions of nudity are revealed, which in the opposition of nature and art emphasize the dichotomy of nature and culture.

Im Zeichen aktueller Diskurse ist vom „Tod des Intellektuellen“ die Rede – des Intellektuellen als einer Figur, die ihre gesellschaftliche Identität über den Anspruch bestimmt, im Namen des „Volkes“ zu sprechen. Gestützt wird dieser Anspruch auf eine privilegierte Beherrschung der Kulturtechniken des Lesens und Schreibens. Vorliegende Studie nimmt die aktuelle Toderklärung zum Anlaß, um den Blick auf die Gründungsphase des Intellektuellenparadigmas in der deutschen Literatur zurückzuwenden. In exemplarischen Lektüren der Schriften Johann Gottfried Herders, Friedrich Schlegels, Heinrich Heines und Georg Büchners analysiert der Verfasser die literarischen Strategien, mit denen Schriftsteller vom ausgehenden 18. bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts versucht haben, sich ihre soziale Identität auf dem Schauplatz des „Volkes“ zu erschreiben. Kurze Kapitel zu Hugo von Hofmannsthal und Bertolt Brecht geben abschließend einen Ausblick auf das 20. Jahrhundert.

Das Werk und die Person Lessings gehört zu den Schwerpunkten der ger-manistischen Forschung, so daß die Publikationen nicht abreißen, die sich allgemeineren und spezielleren Aspekten befassen, 1 doch erstaunt es im-mer wieder, wie viel in diesem Werk auch nach Jahrzehnten intensivster Forschung doch noch unausgeleuchtet bleibt. This article examines Stellan Rye’s Der Student von Prag (1913) from the perspective of the film’s economic codes. By taking a closer look at the visual presentation of money, identity and ownership, it argues that the protagonist, Balduin, is primarily a consumer and that his double reflects his material pursuits. In drawing upon central arguments from Jean Baudrillard’s sociological theory in The Consumer Society, this article shows how the figure of the double in particular is a cinematic dramatization of a Marxist critique of human alienation. The article concludes by positioning the film within the legacy of German Romanticism in order to show how Der Student von Prag utilizes Albert von Chamisso’s novel Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte (1814) as a point of departure in order to construct its distinctly modern economic discourse.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ist der wohl bekannteste Dichter, sein Faust das wohl bekannteste Werk und sein gleichnamiger Titelheld die wohl bekannteste Figur der deutschen Literaturgeschichte. Doch trotz der umfangreichen Autor- und Stoffgeschichte gibt es aufgrund der unüberschaubaren Materialmengen bisher keine umfassende Darstellung der Faust-Rezeption. Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist demnach eine rezeptionsgeschichtliche Untersuchung der literaturwissenschaftlichen Aufnahme der dramatis persona Faust auf Grundlage ausgewählter Quellentexte und Sekundärliteratur im diachronen Vergleich – also die genauere Betrachtung eines kleinen Ausschnittes zur Rezeptionsgeschichte der Goetheschen Gelehrtenfigur. Die exemplarische Fallstudie folgt der Frage, welche soziopolitischen, mentalitäts- aber auch fachgeschichtlichen Einflüsse eine entsprechende Faust-Deutung in den untersuchten Abschnitten des 19., 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts determinierten, und ob Goethe und sein Faust tatsächlich als Erinnerungsorte eines wie auch immer gearteten „typisch Deutschen“ gewertet werden dürfen. Abschließend finden sich zudem konkrete Umsetzungsideen für den Unterricht der Sekundarstufe II.

Heinrich von Kleist was an author deeply tied to the authors of the Enlightenment of the previous generation. His works demonstrate this relationship through the use of themes and motifs of the Aufklärung. This is for instance the case of the adoption motif, that recurs also in some of Lessing’s works. Ruth Klüger identified similarities between Lessing’s Nathan and Kleist’s “Der Findling”. It remains unexplored how this motif recurs in other two texts of Lessing and Kleist: Miss Sara Sampson and “Das Erdbeben in Chili”. In both texts the end is marked by the death of the own biological children, replaced by adopted children. Enlightenment thinkers assert the superiority of adoption. So when in Lessing’s Miss Sara Sampson at the end the harmony is restored thanks to an adoption, in Kleist’s “Erdbeben“ it remains doubtful if this adoption will be successful. The typical als-ob structure and the conjunctive determines this ambiguity. Kleist’s text can be seen as an opposition to the optimistic ideals of the Enlightenment, even if this opposition is not explicit and the interpretation is left to the reader.

This article analyzes the nearly unknown text "Communism of Spirits," makes a considered argument for Hölderlin’s authorship in the 1790s, and reflects on Hölderlin’s persistent and enigmatic legacy among writers, thinker, and artists on the communist left. Adducing manuscript, contextual, and other new evidence, including Hölderlin's relationship with Hegel, it demonstrates that this text deserves to be rescued from its neglect and dismissal by earlier scholars and editors. Most notably, I argue that this fragment likely represents the first usage of the word “communism” in German, or in any modern language.  As such, "Communism of Spirits" provides not only new insights into Hölderlin and his intellectual and political milieu, but offers another possible starting point for a genealogy of the idea of communism.

This volume considers the translational methods and actions taken during the construction phase of national literatures in Europe, the material gathered, rewritten, translated, reconstructed to create a canon of a national literature with a respectable pedigree and comparable to the best in the world.

The focus is very much on the differences and similarities of translation and original work. Authors and translators such as James Macpherson and his Ossian, Thomas Percy and his Reliques; in addition Goethe, Herder and Hegel have a role along with many others.

It is a pdf version of the final manuscript with the same page numbers as the printed book, along with the all the information on the title pages. Revisions are none apart from a handful of minor corrections. There is a difference in the numbering of the footnotes, due to the fact that the footnote no. 4 was on two footnotes in the printed version. This was corrected.

Case studies in postcolonial contextualization mark a forty-year-old missiolog-ical trend in evangelical scholarship. The largely unqualified support of indigenous theological expression by mission theorists represents an epistemological shift from a conservative bibliology toward felt-needs evangelization and religious roundtable dialogue methods. Evangelical contextualization theory today echoes German Ro-manticism's early assessments of indigenous language and local religion, especially as seen in the works of pluralistic Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803). No study of postcolonial contextualization is complete without considering the enduring influence of Herder's " vernacular consciousness " on the current missiological mindset.

The satirical writings of Lucian of Samosata had a tremendous influence on the literature of the Eastern European Haskalah, shaping its criticism of the burgeoning Hasidic movement in the nineteenth century as if there were no gap between it and the Roman Empire of the second century. Lucian’s criticism of false prophets, self-proclaimed philosophers, and common fools and frauds, like his satirical dialogues with the world of the dead, provided the perfect model for those Maskilim who opposed the revelations of the Hasidic movement in both theological and social realms. One particularly salient testimony to the classical satirist’s influence is the astounding translation of his story “Alexander the False Prophet” by the Maskilic writer Meir Letteris, the first translation of Lucian’s work into Hebrew. The translation, printed in full below, was based on the German edition of Christoph Martin Wieland and published in the journal Ha-Tsefirah, which Letteris edited in 1823. As with every translation, it is a new product, shaped in and by its own context. This essay discusses the tendencies and apparent goals of the translator, the additions and omissions he made to the text, and the influence of Lucian’s satirical style on the Haskalah.

A longstanding scholarly consensus holds that German translations of Madame d'Aulnoy's fairy tales did not appear until the second half of the eighteenth century, starting with "Das Cabinet der Feen" published in the 1760s by F. I. Bierling. To explain the relative lateness of these translations, it has been suggested that the people initially interested in d'Aulnoy's texts were mostly sophisticated aristocrats, capable of reading the French originals, and that a demand for versions in the vernacular arose only half a century later, when lower-class audiences too developed a taste for fairy tales. But this dominant narrative needs to be revised in light of the book that I would like to introduce in this post: a German translation of the first eight tales from "Les Contes des fées," published in Nuremberg in 1702.

Ausgehend von einigen theoretischen Überlegungen zur Übersetzung dramatischer Texte geht der Beitrag der Übersetzungstätigkeit des venezianischen Dramatikers Salvatore Fabbrichesi (1772-1827), einer führenden Figur im italienischen Theaterleben des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts, nach. Die Analyse wendet sich insbesondere der 'freien Übersetzung' des Schauspiels "Die Advokaten" (1796) von August Wilhelm Iffland zu, die 1822 unter dem Titel "L’autorità paterna" erschien. Fabbrichesis Version zeigt sich als Umschreibung und Reduktion des deutschen Originals, von dem sie einige zentrale diskursive Elemente bewahrt, wie den Zusammenprall zwischen den naturrechtlichen Positionen der Aufklärung und dem juristischen Positivismus des 19. Jahrhunderts, während sie andere transformiert oder auslässt, wie den für das deutsche bürgerliche Drama typischen Gegensatz zwischen Bürgertum und Aristokratie, zwischen Arbeitsethik und der Korruption des Luxus. Die kontrastive Lektüre der beiden Texte hebt nicht nur die wichtigsten Unstimmigkeiten zwischen dem Original und der italienischen Übersetzung hervor, die sowohl auf die Kreativität des Übersetzers als auch auf die unterschiedlichen Bedürfnisse der Inszenierung und Rezeption in der Zielkultur zurückzuführen sind, sondern erlaubt auch allgemeinere Rückschlüsse auf Fabbrichesis Übersetzungsstrategien und -stil, sowie auf die Besonderheiten einiger wiederkehrender Muster in der Übersetzung theatralischer Texte an der Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert.

On September 7, 1714 Claude Hector de Villars and Prince Eugen of Savoy signed a peace contract in the town of Baden in Switzerland. It's aim was to confirm the contracts of Utrecht (1713) and Rastatt (1714) that had put an end to the war of the Spanish succession. According to his family's tradition, Caspar Joseph Dorer was a member of the town council. At the time of the Baden peace conference he served as «Stadtfähnrich» and was responsible for the the town's defense in times of war. In his «Diarum» he meticulously remembered the daily protocol, the splendid lodgings and meals offered to the foreign war heroes, princes and ambassadors gathering in Baden, as well as the entertainment of their entourage from the point of view of a well instructed eyewitness. - Caspar Joseph Dorer's Diary of the Peace Congress of Baden (1714). Abstract: Während Karl Philipp Moritz Erfahrungsseelenkunde schon lange als Prämisse fur seine Arbeit an 'Anton Reiser' gilt, wurde 'Andreas Hartknopf: Eine Allegorie' noch nie dahingehend untersucht. Es gilt, im Erzähler den Protagonisten des Texts zu entdecken, um den individualpsychologischen Stellenwert der Weisheiten Hartknopfs zu eruieren. Im Porträt des unverhofften Zusammentreffens zweier Menschen inszeniert der Roman Weltvertrauen.

Abstract: Unlike 'Anton Reiser', Karl Philipp Moritz’s other novel, 'Andreas Hartknopf: Eine Allegorie' has never been examined in the light of the author’s 'Erfahrungsseelenkunde'. After discovering the narrator as the protagonist, a new light is cast on the epistemological value of Hartknopf’s
wisdom. The novel depicts the unheard of encounter of two individuals, and hereby produces faith in the auspicious order of things.

The following text concerns the collection of the Gdansk family Breyne, assemblet since the second half of the 17th century, thanks to Jacob Breyne (1637–1607). The father’s passion was continued by Johann Philipp Breyne (1680–1764). In his youth, the junior Breyne lived in an impressive house at ul. Długa 30, and, since 1707, in a house at Brabank 7, which was brought in dowry by his wife, Johanna Constantia. The dwelling had a gar- den, in which many plants, often exotic ones, such as bananas and pineapples, were grown. Although Johann Philipp himself was a doctor, he inherited his father’s fascination with botany; he also supplemented his collection of naturalia and the family book collection, which included the most important compendia on natural history, as well as many drawings and prints.
A portion of the Breynes’ collections, including their amber collection, was purchased by Catherine II in 1766. The other objects, including the numerous drawings, unknown to a broader public, by Johann Philipp’s three daughters: Constantia Philip- pina (1708–?), Anna Renata (1713–1759) and Johanna Henrietta (1714–1797), made their way, together with the book collection, to the castle in Gotha.
Each sister specialised in slightly different topics. The largest number of drawings of plants and birds were left by Anna Rena- ta, and many fewer by Constantia Philippina. Johanna Henrietta specialised in the images of marine creatures. The sisters were inspired by works by Samuel Niedenthal, Andreas Stech and Ma- ria Sybilla Merian, which were available in Gdansk collections. They also had their teacher of drawing – David Schultz. Some of the Breyne sisters’ drawings are marked by a good level of execution, considering they were amateurs. They were also used in contemporary scientific publications. The works surviving in Gotha are testimony to attempts at women’s emancipation in Gdansk in the period of the Enlightenment, in particular in families with scholarly and collectorship traditions (the Breynes, the Kleins), where they received support, including in the area of artistic education.
The collections of Forschungsbibliothek in Gotha include an extensive legacy of the Breyne family from Gdansk, which was acquired by way of purchase in 1799. The first scholar and collector in the dynasty was Jacob Breyne (1637–1697), a botanist recognised throughout Europe, who considerably contributed to the development of knowledge on exotic plants. Jacob’s son, Johann Philipp (1680–1764), continued the family’s scientific and collectorship traditions. He developed his inherited collection, conducted his own paleontological and botanical research, and made sure his father’s works were popularised. Until recently, the activity of the younger Breyne’s daughters, who considerably diversified the family’s collections, remained largely unknown. It is the artistic activity of the three sisters: Constantia Philippina (1708–?), Anna Renata (1713–1759) and Johanna Henrietta (1714– 1797), which will be the main topic of this paper.

W zbiorach Forschungsbibliothek w Gotha znajduje się obszerna spuścizna po gdańskiej rodzinie Breyne, która trafiła tam w drodze zakupu w roku 1799. Pierwszym w dynastii uczonym i zbieraczem był Jacob Breyne (1637–1697), ceniony w całej Europie botanik, który znacząco przyczynił się do rozwoju wiedzy na temat roślin egzotycznych". Badaczem kontynuującym rodzinne tradycje naukowe i kolekcjonerskie był syn Jacoba – Johann Philipp (1680–1764). Rozwijał on odziedziczoną kolekcję, prowadził własne badania paleontologiczne i botaniczne, jak również dbał o upowszechnianie prac ojca. Dotąd bliżej nieznana pozostawała działalność córek młodszego z Breynów, które w sposób znaczący urozmaiciły rodzinne zbiory. To właśnie omówienie artystycznej aktywności trzech sióstr: Constantii Philippiny (1708–?), Anny Re- naty (1713–1759) i Johanny Henrietty (1714–1797) będą głównym tematem niniejszego artykułu.
Rodzina Breynów pochodziła z Brabancji i osiadła w Gdańsku pod koniec XVI w. Ojciec Jacoba był kupcem, a pozycja społeczna i sytuacja finansowa rodziny były w połowie XVII w. na tyle dobre, że mógł on wysłać syna na praktyki kupieckie do Lejdy, gdzie ten jako wolny słuchacz uczęszczał na zajęcia z botaniki. Po powrocie do rodzinnego miasta Jacob poślubił córkę medaliera – Sarę Rogge i prowadził swą działalność naukową, współpracując z artystami, zakładając także prywatną oficynę wydawniczą.
Johann Philipp po studiach w Królewcu wybrał się w 1699 r. do Lejdy, gdzie w 1702 r. uzyskał tytuł doktora medycyny. Po obronie odbył dwuletnią peregrynację po Euro- pie#. W młodości mieszkał w reprezentacyjnej kamienicy przy ul. Długiej 30, gdzie z pewnością znajdowała się przynajmniej część kolekcji jego ojca. W roku 1707 wszedł w posiadanie posesji z rozległym ogrodem na Brabanku 7 (obecnie Stara Stocznia), którą w wianie wniosła jego żona Johanna Constan- tia, z domu Ludewig (1687–1742)$. Para miała ośmioro dzieci, z których większość nie przeżyła rodziców. W jego posiadaniu było także kilka innych domów na terenie Głównego Miasta.

Der in Berlin an der Humboldt-Universität lehrende Germanist Steffen Mar-tus hat neben wissenschaftlichen Büchern über Autoren wie Friedrich von Hagedorn, Ernst Jünger oder die Brüder Grimm 1 auch als Mitherausgeber von Text + Kritik sowie als Leibniz-Preisträger 2015 eine prominente Stel-lung in der Germanistik der Gegenwart. Wenn er nun ein mit 1000 S. um-fangreich ausgefallenes Buch vorlegt, 2 das ein Epochenbild der deutschen Aufklärung des 18. Jahrhunderts zeichnet, kann er sich der Aufmerksamkeit vieler Leser gewiß sein. Martus arbeitete an dem Buch unter dem Arbeitsti-tel Die Entdeckung der Unmündigkeit, weil er meinte, daß sich dadurch an der Aufklärung etwas zeige, was sonst nicht so ins Gewicht falle. Doch hat entweder er selbst oder doch der Verlag den Titel nicht in das Endprodukt übernommen. Es muß an dieser Stelle leider genügen, nur sehr kursorisch auf dieses Buch zu verweisen, das man als Aufklärungsforscher immer wie-der gern zur Hand nimmt und daher auch vom Schreibtisch seit seiner er-sten Auflage 2015 3 in den letzten Jahren nicht wegzudenken war. Da Mar-tus ein ungemein gelehrter und belesener Germanist ist, wird man immer wieder fündig, was die großen Zusammenhänge, aber auch manche Details angeht. Je nach Fragestellung findet man konzise Darstellungen interessan-ter Themen auch philosophischer und theologischer Natur, die wiederum mit literarischen Aspekten verbunden werden. Das gilt etwa für die Physikotheo-logie als herrschendes Paradigma, die hier anhand des englischen Autor William Derham und dem Hamburger Dichter Barthold Hinrich Brockes er-läutert wird. 4

Aufl.-Hannover : Wehrhahn, 2019.-284 S. ; 23 cm.-ISBN 978-3-86525-642-3 : EUR 28.00 [#6518] Seit Gérard Genette 1 den Begriff der Paratextualität geprägt hat, entwickelte sich eine rege Forschung zu dem damit gemeinten Textfeld. Es handelt sich bei Paratexten um eine Form von rahmenden Texten oder Textteilen, die man als Kommunikation des Autors mit seinen Lesern verstehen kann. Je-denfalls dann, wenn es sich wie in den Beispielen der vorliegenden Studie mit auktorialen Paratexten zu tun hat. Es geht um die Frage, wie sich Auto-ren paratextuell inszenieren, um in der Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie der Sat-telzeit erfolgreich sein zu können. Dabei lassen sich auch interessante Wandlungen beobachten, wenn etwa der inzwischen populäre Christoph Martin Wieland sein Verhältnis zu Paratexte im Laufe der Zeit ändert. 2 Im vorliegenden Buch 3 von Torsten Voß, dem eine gemeinsam mit Thomas Wegmann und Nadja Reinhard geschriebene Einleitung vorgeschaltet ist, geht es um den Begriff und die Geschichte des Paratexts, um das Verhält-nis von Peritext und Epitext sowie die paratextuelle Inszenierung des Zu-sammenhangs von Werk und Autorschaft. Daß auch Fragen der Aufmerk-samkeitsökonomie eine Rolle spielen, liegt nahe, wenn es um eine Textsor-te geht, die auch dazu dient, den eigenen Stellenwert des Autors herauszu-streichen.

Der sogenannte Göttinger Hain gilt vielfach als Prototyp eines Dichterbun-des – er ist der Dichterbund schlechthin. Doch wie kam es dazu, daß ein solches Phänomen zum Gegenstand der Literaturgeschichte werden konn-te? Denn wenn man es genau betrachtet, gab es gar nicht von vornherein eine Kategorie Dichterbund, unter die dann etwa der Göttinger Hain subsu-miert werden konnte. Vielmehr schuf der Göttinger Hain durch vielschichtige mediale Inszenierungen das Muster eines Dichterbundes, der dann als sol-cher literaturgeschichtliche Wirkung ausübte. Die sehr gelungene Arbeit von Erika Thomalla unternimmt es nun mit guten Gründen, die verschiedenen Selbstbeschreibungen und gemeinsamen Er-zählungen sowie die zwischen den Mitgliedern des Göttinger Hains zirkulie-renden Medien und Objekte zu untersuchen, so daß auch die " gruppenbil-denden Effekte der gemeinsamen Textarbeit " in den Blick kommen, die bis-her in der Forschung nicht so wichtig genommen wurden, während es in-zwischen schon manche Einzelstudien zu den Mitgliedern des Bundes gab, so etwa zu

Colleagues from all fields of eighteenth-century studies are invited to submit abstracts for this one-week event. Formerly called the East-West Seminar, the International Seminar for Early Career Eighteenth-Century Scholars brings together young researchers from a number of countries each year. The 2018 meeting will take place in Viterbo, Italy and will be organized by Prof. Francesca Saggini and the Dipartimento di studi linguistico-letterari, storico-filosofici e giuridici – DISTU.
The seminar will be held from Monday, September 10 to Friday, September 14, 2018 in Viterbo.

The 2018 ISECS International Seminar for Early Career Scholars will engage discussions on the forms, representations and modalities of silence in the eighteenth century.
Silence, of individuals and cultures, of the physical voice or of the written word and information deleted from the page, has historically taken many forms. It may be reticent, dissembling or imposed by others. Voluntary or coerced, it might be the silence of women, of marginal social and religious groups, of communities that are denied the right to speak. There are other silences as well: the interruption of sound in a musical pause and the silence of religious practices, which speak to, and of, the inner life. All these forms of silence were present in the eighteenth century, as they had been throughout history, but perhaps for the first time, some of them were singled out for special scrutiny. Works on aesthetics, for example, investigated the use of silence and the implicit in rhetorical writing, or dwelled on reverie, and how it might be induced in the reader. In rhetoric, attention was paid to discursive figures and strategies capable of making silence more eloquent than the word. Conduct books devoted many pages to the art of conversation, emphasising the essential role of silence to ensure the correctness of social interactions, especially for women, but also for politicians. Censorship – whether institutional or self-imposed – also produces silences, as do the more or less conscious failures of memory found in life writing and in historical discourse: one need only think of the revisions required to write the history of colonialism, wars or slavery. Eighteenth-century historiography attempted to remove some of the silences it found in history, often filling in the lacunae through conjecture. Silence is also represented in the visual arts and, signally, in the novel, which devised new narrative techniques for the purpose, whether to evoke the silences in characters’ conversations, and the contexts and landscapes in which silence reigns (a hallmark of the picturesque, for example), or to leave the reader in suspense by strategically withholding information. And then there is the theatre, where after the triumph of pantomime and the illegitimate spectacles that deployed a hybridized combination of body, speech, stage machinery and lighting effects, the century comes to a close with the rise of melodrama, which replaced the spoken word with music and revolutionised the notion of acting as the art of speech, while giving new prominence to silent characters and heroes. Finally, there is the silence that becomes firmly and widely established in the eighteenth century through the practice of reading narrative texts for oneself, replacing the social activity of reading aloud for a group of listeners with a solitary, interiorized experience. On these and other silences, on silence in all its forms and meanings in the eighteenth century, the seminar calls for contributions. The theme of the conference, “Silence in eighteenth-century arts, history and philosophy,” must thus be understood in the broadest terms possible to include:


- anonymity
- silence, reflection, meditation
- social silence, silence and social interaction
- negation: denials, disclaimers, disavowals
- silence and secrets
- censorship and self-censorship
- ellipses, omissions, blank pages, hyphens, asterisks – the typographical and linguistic modes of silence
- ghost chapters (deleted, lost, rewritten)
- silenced characters, characters that disappear
- quiet spaces: the loci of silence
- reading and silence
- silence as resistance and rebellion
- scripting silence and muteness
- the performativity of silence
- silence and the canon
- silence and history
- silence in relation to cultural memory studies
- silence and/as remembrance

The seminar is limited to 15 participants. The proposals (approx. 3 pages, double-spaced, max 1,000 words) should be based on an original research project (e.g. a doctoral dissertation) which addresses one of the aspects mentioned above. Because this is a seminar rather than a conference, each participant will be given approximately one hour to present the texts and questions that will then form the basis of a group discussion led in turn by one of the participants. Preference will be given to scholars who are at the beginning of their academic career (ABD; PhD or equivalent for less than six years, including ECRs). The official languages of the seminar are English, Italian, French. Translations of abstracts and various seminar materials not in English will be made available to participants.

Applications should include the following information: a brief curriculum vitae with date of PhD (or equivalent); a list of principal publications and scholarly presentations; a brief description of the proposed paper (approx. 3 pages, double-spaced, max 1,000 words); and one letter of recommendation. Der Dichter Gottfried August Bürger (1747-1794), den meisten Lesern wohl vor allem als Verfasser einer Version der Geschichten des Barons von Münchhausen bekannt, 1 erhält derzeit eine sorgfältig erarbeitete Ausgabe seiner Briefwechsel in mehreren Bänden (fünf sind geplant), die eine deutli-che Verbesserung gegenüber einer bereits im 18. Jahrhundert gedruckten vierbändigen Ausgabe bringt. Der erste Band erschien 2015 und wurde in IFB ausführlich besprochen, so daß hier nicht mehr auf alle dort schon an-gesprochenen Aspekte eingegangen werden muß. 2 Erfreulicherweise disku-tiert der Herausgeber Ulrich Joost in diesem vorliegenden Band auch die in verschiedenen Rezensionen gemachten Verbesserungs-oder Ergänzungs-vorschläge, was für denjenigen Leser, der sich für so etwas interessiert, immer aufschlußreich ist. Bürgers Briefwechsel war zwar schon vorher recht gut bekannt, aber es tauchten doch auch gegenüber älteren Ausgaben immer wieder neue Briefe auf und auch ein verändertes Verständnis davon, was überhaupt als Brief gelten kann, führte zu einer Erweiterung des druckbaren Materials. Manifest in the author’s nineteenth-century correspondences to American acquaintances, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe prophesized the early American Republic’s cultural freedom to forge a literary tradition unburdened by the nation’s European past.  Celebrated in his works such as Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship and The Travellings of Wilhelm Meister, Goethe commended the American opportunity to forge anew; however, works including the first American novel, William Hill Brown’s The Power of Sympathy (1789), and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Evangeline (1847) reflect the American author’s confluence with Goethean thought and alignment with European literary movements in America’s post-Revolutionary literary developments.  Signalling divergent encounters with Goethe’s works—Brown engaging the younger Goethe’s isolationist and non-conformist tenacity and Longfellow invoking the Faustian Man of Letters in his own academic career—my paper argues that both Brown and Longfellow reflect a cosmopolitan impulse in late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century American literature.  Echoing Goethe’s highly controversial and socially critical work The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), Brown’s protagonist not only mimics Werther’s suicide following his entanglement with unrequited love, but also embodies the “Sturm und Drang” (“Storm and Stress”) ethos, refuting the hypocritical practices of the American aristocracy.  Emblematic of America’s subsequent encounter with Goethe in its institutionalization and study of the German author’s works in the nineteenth century, Longfellow’s Evangeline—reminiscent of Goethe’s epic poem Hermann und Dorothea in form and plot—reverberates the American poet’s pursuit of introducing Weimar Classicism and European Romanticism into American poesy.  Encouraging the perception of American literature’s development as a continuation rather than a new beginning, Brown and Longfellow’s works illuminate a pivotal transatlantic connection between Goethe and American literature, salient in the chronicles of the nation’s literary canon.

Rezeption Deutschland 18. Jahrhundert 08-1/2-194 Distribution und Übersetzung englischen Schrifttums im Deutschland des 18. Univ., Diss., 2005.-ISBN 978-3-598-24905-1 : EUR 128.00 [9793] Die Dissertation von Jennifer Willenberg bietet eine sorgfältige Darstellung der Distribution englischen Schrifttums in Deutschland während eben jener Zeit, in der England für die Deutschen entdeckt wurde. Deshalb stellt die Autorin ihren an Informationen reichen Ausführungen nach einem einleiten-den Kapitel zum Forschungsstand und zu bibliographischen Grundlagen 1 1 Die auf S. 8-9 und im Literaturverzeichnis unter Bibliographien S. 350 erwähn-ten Arbeiten von Bernhard Fabian und Marie-Luise Spiekermann ändern nichts an der bis heute fehlenden bibliographischen Kontrolle auf diesem Gebiet. Das im Rahmen des Arbeitsbereichs Die Aufnahme der englischen Kultur in Deutschland im achtzehnten Jahrhundert des inzwischen emeritierten Münsteraner Professors Bernhard Fabian geplante Bibliographische Handbuch zur Rezeption englischen Schrifttums im deutschen achtzehnten Jahrhundert liegt brach und eine Publikati-on dürfte eher unwahrscheinlich sein. Zuletzt las man in einem Bericht über die Forschungsschwerpunkte 2003-2004 folgendes: "Die über 12.000 Eintragungen umfassende Bibliographie wird alle zwischen 1680 und 1810 aus dem Englischen ins Deutsche übersetzten Werke enthalten, soweit diese nicht in Zeitschriften und Zeitungen erschienen sind. Sie schließt außerdem Übersetzungen in andere Sprachen und Nachdrucke von englischen Originalwerken ein, die in diesem Zeit-raum im deutschen Sprachgebiet erschienen sind." Es ist erstaunlich, daß die Verfasserin offensichtlich keine Kenntnis von der Fürst-lichen Bibliothek auf Schloß Corvey und ihren Beständen genommen hat. Jeden-falls fehlen im Literaturverzeichnis die einschlägigen Publikationen (und da es kein Sachregister gibt, kann man nicht unter Corvey nachschlagen). Auch wenn von dem Gesamtbestand von 35.201 Titeln in 73.942 Bänden (darunter ca. 13.800 englischsprachige) rd. 90 % auf das 19. Jahrhundert (vor allem auf die ersten Jahrzehnte) entfallen und nur ca. 10 % auf das 18. Jahrhundert, hätte sich ein Eingehen auf diesen Bestand gelohnt, zumal sich die Bedingungen für die Distribution englischen Schrifttums nicht mit dem Jahr 1800 schlagartig geändert ha-ben. Immerhin scheint es für die fürstliche Familie kein besonderes Problem ge-wesen zu sein, sich englische Bücher zu besorgen. Although the anthology has its roots in the ancient world, it arose in German letters in the eighteenth century. While the nineteenth century can be called – quantitatively and terminologically – the heyday of the anthology, the eighteenth century was the dawn of its diversity. The present special number examines this variety, as represented in particular examples. The first and most obvious problem for our period is terminological. Once we overcome the heterogeneous terms for anthologies, however, we propose a focus on their functions. Central to these is an acknowledgement of an anthology's agenda, which can be applied or aesthetic, cultural-political or poetological. Consequently, we contend that examining eighteenth-century anthologies and collections into the mid-nineteenth century contributes more broadly to an emergent body of scholarship on editorship and its relationship to the topic of authorship at a time when a commercial book market was becoming established, and for which the ‘modern author’ was increasingly plural in its manifestations.

Die Anthologie hat zwar ihre Wurzeln in der Antike, in der deutschsprachigen Literatur gewinnt die Sammelform jedoch erst im 18. Jahrhundert an Aktualität. Während das 19. Jahrhundert zahlenmäßig wie terminologisch als das eigentliche Jahrhundert der Anthologie angesehen werden kann, gilt es hier, das 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als Formierungsphase der deutschsprachigen Anthologie in den Blick zu nehmen. Das vorliegende Themenheft widmet sich dieser Vielfalt mit einer Reihe von exemplarischen Studien. Die folgende Einleitung stellt die deutschsprachige Anthologie von ca. 1700 bis 1850 als Forschungsgegenstand vor und unternimmt sowohl terminologische wie funktionale Abgrenzungsversuche, um sie im Spannungsverhältnis zu anderen Sammelformen zu thematisieren. Dabei wird dem ästhetischen, kulturellen und poetologischen Potenzial der anthologischen Sammlung Rechnung getragen. Die unternommene Neuperspektivierung der Anthologie des 18. Jahrhunderts bis in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein versteht sich im weiteren Sinne als Beitrag zu einem wachsenden Forschungsinteresse am Thema der Herausgeberschaft, das nicht zu trennen ist von Überlegungen zu Autorschaftskonzepten in einer Zeit, als sich ein literarischer Markt etablierte.

В статье осуществляется сравнительный анализ романных поэтик Жан-Поля и Бернхарда, при этом внимание сосредоточено на системе персонажей-двойников, амбивалентной - созидательно-разрушительной - природе двойничества в творчестве и жизни, на интертекстуальных параллелях в произведениях литературных "двойников" друг друга, немецкого предромантика и австрийского модерниста.

Der Titel dieses Bandes, der sich hier auf Johann Christoph Gottsched 1 be-zieht, ist in anderen Publikationen auch schon für Christian Fürchtegott Gel-lert in Anspruch genommen worden, 2 von Philipp Melanchthon in einer frü-heren Epoche ganz zu schweigen. In der vorliegenden Publikation, einer Bielefelder Dissertation von 2010, die von Wolfgang Braungart betreut wur-de, behandelt der Verfasser George Bajeski den Einfluß Gottscheds auf die Herausbildung des Frühklassizismus. Die lange Zeit zwischen Vorlage und Publikation der Dissertation hat dazu beigetragen, daß die Literatur nicht mehr ganz auf dem neuesten Stand ist, vor allem was die historisch-kritische Edition des Briefwechsels betrifft, vor der nur die ersten beiden Bände von Bajeski rezipiert werden konnten (bis heute sind seitdem immer-hin die Bände 3 bis 10 erschienen 3). This dissertation offers new way of thinking about the German poetry anthology and its development, and proposes new boundaries for the research of anthologies and other poetry collections. The period 1765-1796 is a crucial period of change for poetry collections, which offers particularly rich material for a study of their past and present. The first half of the introduction contains a description of the development of the form as well as the historiographical framework. The second half describes previous approaches to the Early Modern German poetry anthology and shows new directions for research, particularly the application of methods from book history to these sources. In the three case studies that follow, book history methodology is used to create narratives about exemplary period anthologies compiled and edited by three prolific anthologists, Karl Wilhelm Ramler (1725-1798), Christian Heinrich Schmid (1746-1800), and Karl Heinrich Jördens (1757-1835), each of whom published multiple poetry collections during the last third of the eighteenth century. This dissertation can prove the potential of such documents for the more general study of German literature and culture, which, although previously acknowledged, has remained widely untested. The case studies suggest specific ways in which book history methodologies can supplement further study of eighteenth-century German literature and literary culture. A chronological bibliography of early German poetry collections from 1624 to 1799 is also included.
