Neuf-Brisach 1698 bis 1870 Vom Vaubanschen Meisterwerk zur unbekannten Festung Unter der großen Anzahl der von Vauban befestigten Anlagen bilden die neuen, von ihm ex nihilo entworfenen und unter seiner Leitung gebauten Befestigungen, die bei weitem ehrgei-zigsten Projekte. Im Jahre 1698 wurde schließlich die neunte und als Krönung seines Werkes als Festungsbaumeister angesehene Festung in Angriff genommen: Neuf-Brisach. 1 Seit 2007 als Unesco-Weltkulturerbe eingetragen, ist sie wohl eine der bekanntesten Leistungen Vaubans, und dennoch ist die Festungsstadt Neubreisach bisher noch weitgehend unbekannt geblieben! Innerhalb der Entwicklung des Bastionärsystems wurde das in Neubreisach verwendete Muster später als sogenannte 3. Manier Vaubans bezeichnet (franz. Front de Neuf-Brisach). Vauban hat nicht in solchen Typologien gedacht, er hat seine Entwürfe immer dem Gelände angepasst und dafür die beste Festungsarchitektur entwickelt. In den alten Traktaten wie in der neuzeitliche Fachliteratur reichlich erwähnt, als Lehrobjekt für Ingenieure und Genie-Offiziere benutzt, sind Beschreibung wie auch Abbildungen von Neubreisach öfters falsch oder zumindest als mangelhaft zu bezeichnen (Abb. 1 = Taf. VIII). 2 Das ist eine weitere Hürde, die der Festungsforscher zu überwinden hat. Natürlich blieb auch Neubreisach von den Jahrhunderten nicht verschont. Umfangreiche Veränderungen wurden im Laufe der Zeit an den Befestigungsanlagen vorgenommen. Insbesondere nach der Belagerung von 1870 und den dabei entstandenen Schäden durch die Bombardierung, wurde Neubreisach, jetzt eine deutsche Festung, für eine neue Rolle als Kernpunkt des Brückenkopfes am Oberrhein eingerichtet und demgemäß vielfach, auch festungsbaumäßig, verändert. Obwohl diese Periode nach 1871 von größtem Interesse wäre, werden wir uns hauptsächlich dem Vaubanschen Meisterwerk von seinem Ursprung bis 1870 widmen.

Cet essai  contextualise l'autobiographie d'Adélaïde Herculine dite Alexina et devenue Abel Barbin (1838-1868) en la replaçant dans l'histoire de ce que les médecins ont appelé "les erreurs de sexe" qualifiant ainsi les personnes "hermaphrodites" présentant une discordance entre leur sexe biologique et leur sexe social au XIXe siècle.

In this volume, Elisabeth Fraser shows that artists and the works they created in the Mediterranean during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were informed by mutual dependence and reciprocity between European nations and the Ottoman Empire. Her rich exploration of this vibrant cross-cultural exchange challenges the dominant interpretation of European relations with the East during the period, revealing a shared world of fluid and long-sustained interactions.

Voyagers to and from the Ottoman Empire documented their journeys in prints, paintings, and lavishly illustrated travelogues; many of these helped define Europe’s self-identified role as heir to Ottoman civilizations and bolstered its presence in the Islamic Mediterranean and beyond. Fraser finds that these works illuminate not only how travelers’ experiences abroad were more nuanced than the expansionist ideology with which they became associated, but also how these narratives depicted the vitality of Ottoman culture and served as extensions of Ottoman diplomacy. Ottomans were aware of and responded to European representations, using them to defend Ottoman culture and sovereignty. In embracing the art of both cultures and setting these works in a broader context, Fraser challenges the dominant historiographical tradition that sees Ottoman artists adopting European modes of art in a one-sided process of “Europeanization.”

Theoretically informed and rigorously researched, this cross-cultural approach to European and Ottoman art sheds much-needed critical light on the widely disseminated travel images of the era—important cultural artifacts in their own right—and provides a fresh and inviting understanding of the relationships among cultures in the Mediterranean during an era of increasing European expansionism.

In Provence, in the Southeastern France, Marseille's water supply has always been problematic. Constrained by a mountainous topography within a rocky and dry landscape its inhabitants have often coped with acute water shortages. Up until the mid-19th century, water resources consisted of an old medieval aqueduct, some karstic springs and many public and private wells. And, in order to overcome the chronic lack of freshwater, solutions were always temporary and ineffective. However, this issue became so pressing in the first half of the nineteenth century, thus forcing municipal officials to quickly deal with this problem. Indeed, the combination of a growing population, a booming industry, but above all severe recurring winter and summer hydrological droughts for about 35 years, such as in 1817/18 and 1833/34 (associated with the apogee of the Little Ice Age in Western Mediterranean), drastically reduced the available volume of water for both citizens and local factories. Consequences on the economy and the urban environment were quick enough but the lack of water mainly resulted in significant sanitary problems. We propose to explore policy answers and socioeconomic options that have solved the supply problems thanks to the construction of a new aqueduct to carry potable water from the Durance River to the city. First, after describing the hydro-climatic context of the Provence area (especially during the second half of the LIA) and the state of water resources of Marseille at this time, we'll present major social, sanitary as well as economic crises due to the lack of water which impacted the city together with their effects on the urban dynamic. Then, we'll analyze public policy and challenging technical choices made by the municipality to deal with chronic water shortages.

M. Caravan, personnage principal mis en scène dans la nouvelle En famille de Maupassant, semble tout avoir du pauvre diable malgré lui assujetti au comique : incapable de prendre sa place dans tous les lieux qu’il fréquente, il est systématiquement montré dans une indépassable position de soumission par rapport à son employeur, à sa mère et à sa femme. En février 1873, les journaux parisiens crient haut et fort les crimes commis par la Bande des casquettes noires dont le chef, Gaston Gélinier, nʼa que quatorze ans. Parmi les membres de la bande, on trouve Auguste Touzard, un employé auxiliaire du ministère des finances et ancien professeur de rhétorique dans des collèges prestigieux. Comment un étudiant brillant, licencié ès lettres à vingt-et-un ans et fils dʼun directeur de collège, se retrouve-t-il sur le banc des accusés avec ce groupe de jeunes criminels ? Les articles de presse dévoilent certains des secrets de lʼaffaire, dʼautres détails nous parviennent par l’intermédiaire de Georges Hérelle, ancien collègue de Touzard au collège de Dijon. On découvre que Touzard est lʼamant dʼun des membres de la bande, Victor Richard, âgé de dix-sept ans. Leur relation est au centre de lʼinterrogatoire de Touzard durant son procès : « Assez. Avouez-vous enfin vos habitudes infâmes ? ». Malgré sa complicité mineure dans le recel des objets volés par la bande, le tribunal estime que Touzard est coupable dʼavoir trahi sa classe sociale, son éducation et sa famille. Le juge voit différemment la nature de ses crimes et considère son homosexualité comme un danger social. Touzard est condamné à quinze ans de travaux forcés et il meurt à lʼâge de vingt-neuf ans, en novembre 1874, quelques mois après son arrivée en Nouvelle Calédonie. L’objectif de notre communication est d’examiner attentivement, d’un côté, le discours sur ce scandale que tient les journaux de l’époque et, de l’autre, la manière dont Georges Hérelle raconte le scandale dans des documents qui se trouvent actuellement à la Médiathèque de la ville de Troyes. Lʼaffaire Touzard constitue un rare témoignage dont l’étude nous permettra d’apprécier pleinement les difficultés de la vie homosexuelle dans les premières années de la IIIe République.

This article focuses on the conception of property in the first French Republican Socialists during the July Monarchy in order to understand the formation of their political discourse. The analyse of the problem of property enlightens the tensions animating the first phase of democracy as well as the modern and politically individualistic character of Socialism. In particular, through this case study, this conception of democracy appears in terms of a society of individuals with same rights spontaneously orientated to the common wealth. After having drawn an outline of first Republican Socialists idea of property -in particular infront of the general phenomenon of the disembedding of Economics-, I focus my attention on one particular mean conceived at that time to transform Property, the credit. Actually, the credit organisation can be regarded as a tool to articulate the relationship between the political authority and the individuals, or particular associations, in a flexible way. Therefore, I argue that credit organization enabled a kind of spread centralization.

Challenging distinctions between fine and decorative art, this book begins with a critique of the Rodin scholarship, to establish how the selective study of his oeuvre has limited our understanding of French nineteenth-century sculpture.
    The book’s central argument is that we need to include the decorative in the study of sculpture, in order to present a more accurate and comprehensive account of the practice and profession of sculpture in this period. Drawing on new archival sources, sculptors and objects, this is the first sustained study of how and why French sculptors collaborated with state and private luxury goods manufacturers between 1848 and 1895.
    Organised chronologically, the book identifies three historically-situated frameworks, through which sculptors attempted to validate themselves and their work in relation to industry: industrial art, decorative art and objet d’art. Detailed readings are offered of sculptors who operated within and outside the Salon, including Sévin, Chéret, Carrier-Belleuse and Rodin; and of diverse objects and materials, from Sèvres vases, to pewter plates by Desbois, and furniture by Barbedienne and Carabin.
    By contesting the false separation of art from industry, Claire Jones’s study restores the importance of the sculptor-manufacturer relationship, and of the decorative, to the history of sculpture.

Art and Patrimony argues that Delacroix’s painting was implicated in issues of cultural inheritance and the politics of memory and forgetting in the volatile context of post-revolutionary France.  Exploring historian Lynn Hunt’s theory of the political family romance in the cultural realm, my book addresses social, legal, and artistic constructions of inheritance and lineage; gender and the family as a subtext in Delacroix’s art and as a political emblem; private art collecting as a model of activist citizenship; and the notion of the king’s body as symbolic of the public sphere in Delacroix’s painting, popular prints, and court ceremonies.

Interroger la pertinence de la notion de « littérature panoramique », appliquée par Walter Benjamin à un ensemble composite d’études de moeurs du XIXe siècle, à partir de corpus français, belge, anglais, belge, allemand, espagnol, autrichien : tel est l’enjeu de ce numéro. Si ce modèle heuristique, emprunté au spectacle du panorama, semble bien rendre compte de la « pulsion scopique », liée à l’avènement de l’état social démocratique, qui sous-tend ces textes et se manifeste par des effets de spécularité et de réflexivité ; si, par sa vocation unifiante, elle met en lumière la dialectique du même et de l’autre, de l’universel et de l’individuel héritée des Lumières, qui les caractérise, elle peut aussi relever de l’illusion d’optique. On se livre donc ici à une critique de la raison panoramique, à une critique aussi de la raison critique en scrutant le moment où, dans chaque pays concerné, la « littérature panoramique » se constitue en objet d’étude et en question. Ce numéro se veut tout à la fois l’antichambre et le tremplin d’un site d’étude interdisciplinaire en préparation, « Sociorama », consacré à la littérature panoramique internationale.

Si, au tout début du XIXe siècle, les destinations migratoires les plus fréquentes des Béarnais sont l’Espagne et les Amériques, il arrive que certains soient conduits à s’installer dans d’autres pays. Dans le cas de Barthélemy Samson, un cadet du piémont né en 1774, Naples et Palerme seront le lieu de son implantation et de son activité de l’âge de 35 à 60 ans. Conséquence de ses compétences, de son ascension professionnelles et du contexte économique, il acquiert une certaine aisance financière qui lui permet de nombreuses acquisitions immobilières en Béarn. Mais c’est avant tout grâce au soutien et à la solidarité de sa parentèle, dans un système de dons et d’échanges réciproques, qu’il parviendra à les mettre en valeur et les gérer. À travers les documents d’archives, et malgré leurs lacunes, apparaît un système familial riche et complexe en constante évolution.

Battus dans les urnes et dans la rue au printemps 1848, les « démocrates-socialistes » entendent faire entendre leur voix à l’élection présidentielle de décembre. S’ils refusent le principe même de la présidence, ils se divisent sur la stratégie à adopter. Une partie d’entre eux, réunis autour du journal Le Peuple, entendent promouvoir un candidat impossible, qui incarne par sa personne leur protestation. Ils choisissent François-Vincent Raspail, un chef clubiste, savant et médecin des pauvres, alors en prison. Cette candidature donne lieu à une controverse au cours de laquelle deux conceptions de la politique s’affrontent. Malgré un faible score national, Raspail cristallise un vote de classe, faisant de cette candidature une étape dans la construction du mouvement ouvrier français.

Abstract. Invented in the XVIIth century, calculating machines became a small sub-sector of the precision mechanic industry during the XIXth century. While they have been thoroughly studied from the technical point of view, their economic and business history is still largely underdocumented.
In France, between the 1820s and 1850s, several inventors-entrepreneurs developed arithmetic calculators. The most famous was the Thomas Arithmometre, which made France a temporary world leader in this category of machines : The Arithmometre was sold throughout the world, was copied and became a generic name for calculators. Our paper establishes a typology of inventors and of businesses committed to this new product.

Toward the end of the XIXth century, the French calculator industry was swept away by foreign competition, as new entrants flooded the market with more advanced machines, well protected by strong patents, marketed through agressive sales forces. This situation did not seem to cause political concern in France until the first world war.
It was only in the wake of the Great War that a reaction of « economic patriotism » called for a renewal of initiative, of innovation and of entrepreneurship, which indeed appeared in the 1930s.



Résumé.

Inventées au XVIIe siècle, les machines à calculer ont été industrialisées au XIXe. Si elles ont été bien étudiées du point de vue technique, l’histoire économique de leur industrie reste en grande partie à écrire.
En France, dans les années 1820-1850, plusieurs inventeurs-entrepreneurs ont développé des calculatrices arithmétiques. La plus célèbre est l’Arithmomètre, qui dans la seconde moitié du siècle s’exporte dans le monde entier, est copié et devient un nom générique pour cette classe de machines. Le présent article établit une typologie des inventeurs et des entreprises qui investissent dans ce nouveau produit.
À partir des années 1880, l’industrie française du calcul est balayée par la concurrence de nouveaux entrants, qui inondent le marché mondial avec des machines plus perfectionnées, protégées par de solides brevets, amorties sur les marchés intérieurs de pays en plein essor et diffusées par des réseaux commerciaux agressifs. Cette situation ne semble d’abord pas poser de problème politique en France.
C’est seulement au lendemain de la Grande Guerre que s’amorcera une réaction de « patriotisme économique », favorisant une nouvelle génération d’inventeurs-entrepreneurs.

In the history of music, compositions now seen as masterpieces were often given a harsh reception by both professional critics and the general public upon their first performance. This was also the case with the Symphony in D minor by César Franck (1822-1890). The premiere was very poorly received, and was criticized by Franck’s contemporaries and critics for (among other things) being too ‘German.’ The attacks were primarily aimed at the question of orchestration and instrumentation, as well as claims that the piece supposedly had a ‘hidden program’ – another possible element of the German tradition of the 19th century, although Franck strongly denied this accusation.
Anti-German feelings were on the rise in France after the country’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and this antagonism soon found its way into the cultural scene. As a result, in 1871 Société Nationale de Musique was founded in Paris with the aim of preserving the French music tradition. However, merely fifteen years later, the Société was split into two factions. The first faction, led by Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), continued to insist on the 'purity' of French music. The other faction, led by Franck and his students, championed foreign (primarily German) influence. Although it was Franck's faction that eventually emerged victorious from this duel (with the group of Saint-Saëns leaving the Société), the circles of French music academia remained deeply divided and mostly continued to harbor chauvinistic inclinations. It was in this climate that Franck decided to compose his symphony in the late 1880s. Upon its completion in late 1888, the symphony could not be performed by any relevant institutions due to opposition in leading musical circles, and the composer had no choice but to have its premiere performed by the orchestra of Conservatoire de Paris, the college where he taught.
Of course, 130 years later, Franck’s Symphony in D-minor is seen as one of the most important works of this genre in both France and the Romantic era. However, in view of the historical information presented above, this analysis will attempt to explain if the accusations against its composer had been justified – in other words, if a work with marked German characteristics had really been written in France in the era of national purism.

This article draws on two different bodies of scholarship, rarely considered together — the growing literature on the history of emotion in the era of the French Revolution and studies of gender and war in the twentieth century, especially the First World War — and uses a variety of sources, from recruitment propaganda to police records and songs, to show the specific ways gendered and emotional images could be deployed at transitional moments. It investigates why royalist popular culture in the immediate aftermath of the Napoleonic wars often depicted young mothers anxious for peace. Such representations reflected the brutality of the wars, women’s relative prominence in anti-conscription resistance and a cultural shift from revolutionary injunctions to wives and mothers to sacrifice their menfolk for the good of the nation to Napoleonic images of women as tremulous counterparts to virile soldiers. But the image of peace-loving mothers in 1814 and 1815 was not simply a response to the devastation of war or a continuation of Napoleonic gender roles. Instead, it served distinctive purposes in a period of peace-making and political transition, which entailed not only disentangling masculinity from martial valour but also strategically invoking feminine anguish or joy.  The focus on Louis XVIII’s role in rescuing mothers helped legitimize an unpopular monarch, who had gained power only with the help of foreign armies, and was returning to a country that had executed its last king. The image of grateful women and happy families also deflected attention away from contemporary problems — including the difficult return of veterans to a defeated country and the lasting grief of those who had lost loved ones in war — by focusing on the joy of mothers whose sons would remain safely home.

Carpenters on strike. The workers’ struggle in the Paris of 1845 and its political meanings. The article focuses on the strike of Parisian carpenters during the summer of 1845. In the first part, by using archive sources and judicial reporting, the author retraces the unfolding of this strike and highlights the role of compagnonnage societies, masters’ Chamber, and public authorities. This event invites us to appreciate the importance of the tarif (the structure of negotiations and agreements between workers and masters) and the emergence of new relations of production. The second part of the article is devoted to the analysis of the political dimension of the strike: the author investigates the various positions emerging from the public debate and illustrates the different concepts of society that confronted each other during this struggle, with special regard to the articulation between social space and legal-political framework.


Carpentieri in sciopero. Una lotta operaia nella Parigi del 1845 e i suoi significati politici.
L’articolo si concentra sullo sciopero dei carpentieri parigini dell’estate del 1845. Nella prima parte, a partire da fonti d’archivio e cronache giudiziarie, l’autore ripercorre lo sviluppo di questo sciopero e sottolinea il ruolo delle società di compagnonaggio, della camera patronale e delle autorità pubbliche. L’episodio invita a considerare l’importanza del tarif (la struttura di negoziazione e di accordo fra operai e maîtres) e l’emergenza di nuove relazioni di produzione. La seconda parte dell’articolo è dedicata alla dimensione politica esplicita in queste lotte: l’autore analizza le diverse posizioni che prendono forma nel dibattito pubblico e descrive le differenti concezioni della società che si confrontano durante lo sciopero, con una particolare attenzione per i modi di articolare il quadro giuridico-politico e lo spazio sociale.

The present paper focuses on prince François Claude Auguste de Crouy-Chanel (1793-1873). In the balance between comedy and tragedy, he was one the most controversial figure of his time. Born in an aristocratic family, from 1823 to 1839, he was involved in a number of conspiracies: at first, he was a financial broker for the Spanish royalists, then he tried to persuade infante Francisco de Paula of Borbon to become emperor of Mexico, finally he plotted with Prince Napoleon III, ten years before his rising as president of the French Republic (1848).
Having obtained nothing, he decided to turn his back to France and to go to Italy in 1859. There he spent several years trying to be recognized as the last descendent of Arpad's dynasty, the ancient ruling family of Hungary. In 1865, he also brought an action against Francesco V, former duke of Modena, to obtain his hereditary titles. His arrival was a shock for the Hungarians exiled in Italy: their unity of purposes was irremediably broken, since not everyone welcomed the prince as his future ruler. Among the enthusiasts were Gyorgy Klapka and Albert Nyary, which were also freemasons. Freemasonry was, indeed, another field of action for the prince. Having the 33rd degree since 1818, he had a moral supremacy over the “young” Italian freemasons and for this reason was one of the founders of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite based in Turin (1862). Close to Lodovico Frapolli, which would have been Grand Master of the Grand Orient of Italy in 1869, he was the first Sovereign Grand Commander until 1864.
After losing his action against Francesco V his fortune started rapidly to fade and soon was forced to come back to France where he died in poverty in 1873.

First part of my presentation on the life of poet Adrien Juvigny (1849-1873), followed by an analysis of the literary, historical and philosophical models used by Paul and Félix Bourget, Adrien Juvigny and Georges Hérelle to refer to male to male love in their letters to each other between 1869 and 1873. This unpublished correspondence is currently being edited in preparation for publication, scheduled for 224 by Classiques Garnier (Paris).

Promenade, se promener, déambuler, errer, se déplacer, se balader, circuler, flâner, marcher ; autant de mots que l’on utilise à loisir comme synonymes, mais qui, à y regarder de plus près, rendent compte de réalités et de déterminants bien différents. Comprendre un mot, et qui plus est dans une époque antérieure, c’est surtout tâcher d’habiller le vocable de référents historiques, de le remettre dans son contexte pour voir se dégager une subtilité étymologique qui renvoie à une réalité. Le déplacement dans l’espace urbain a une longue histoire, il existe une généalogie entre les substantifs français évoqués plus haut. Plutôt qu’une union par des liens synonymiques, il semble qu’il s’agisse d’une hiérarchie familiale séparée par des générations successives. Par exemple, la promenade engendrerait la flânerie qui à son tour engendrerait la ballade et l’errance. Il nous manque, à ce jour, de grandes monographies sur l’histoire des déplacements qui permettraient de tracer d’un geste sûr et précis une ligne entre ces mots, un peu comme un dessin à numéro dont l’image finale ne se révèle que quand le dessinateur a relié tous les points et prend de la distance par rapport à son ouvrage.

"Résumé:
Voulant inculquer aux jeunes français le sentiment patriotique, la Troisième République se sert du roman scolaire comme outil pédagogique. Dans cet article, nous étudions le roman phare du genre : Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, pour découvrir comment il s’apprête à plusieurs niveaux de lecture. Roman d’apprentissage, mais également Bible laïque qui a la prétention de résumer tout le génie de la Nation, l’histoire de ces deux orphelins Lorrains partis à la recherche de leur oncle pour pouvoir garder leur nationalité française suite à l’occupation allemande, est aussi le récit d’une quête familiale. L’article cherche ainsi à cerner le thème de la fraternité élaboré par le roman, à mettre en relief son rapport avec les sentiments identitaires que le roman cultive chez les écoliers et à étudier les différents procédés utilisés pour susciter l’adhésion des écoliers à l’idéal républicain.Par ailleurs, nous analysons la façon par laquelle l’écrivain exploite le voyage traditionnel des anciens compagnons pour élaborer le thème de la maîtrise d’un savoir. Ce parcours qui prend les enfants aux quatre coins du pays, leur donne une expérience charnelle et du paysage et des lieux. Ils font ainsi leur apprentissage de la France. Cette France éternelle qu’ils apprennent à aimer. Au bout de ce voyage, qui aurait duré un an, les deux enfants deviennent effectivement Français, puis qu’ils réalisent une appropriation du territoire de la Mère- Patrie"

During the first part of 19th Century France developed a modern pattern of expropriation for public utility  starting from the age of Napoleon (1807-1810). This pattern has been at the heart of the conflict between public administration and owners. Property was a juridical institution but also a fundamental value for the bourgeois society. La reconnaissance d'un art populaire en France : l'Art forain, de l'exposition au Musée « Etranger, marchand parcourant les villages, les campagnes ». L'épithète, apparu dans la langue française à la fin du XIIème siècle, puise son origine dans le terme issu du latin populaire « foranus », désignant l'étranger, le dehors. La fête foraine perpétue en quelques sortes une tradition de l'étranger, celle du commerce ambulant, de la « multitude étrange » pour reprendre les termes de Chateaubriand ou de Daudet. Elle remonte historiquement aux révolutions industrielles et s'arrime à la tradition millénaire des grandes fêtes populaires. Considérée dans sa dimension européenne, « Fun Fair » ou « Jahrmarkt », elle s'ancre tout particulièrement dans les pays d'Europe occidentale au climat continental et océanique, principalement en Angleterre, Belgique, France et Allemagne. Plus à l'Est, la manifestation du cirque tend en effet à l'emporter sur celle de la fête. La fête itinérante est ainsi à la source d'une forme d'art originale principalement européenne, dit « forain », car fruit du travail d'artistes véritables, il possède ses propres styles, ses images, et souffre également d'un déficit d'affection lié à son statut d'art populaire, souvent relégué au rang de sous-genre par les spécialistes des arts du spectacle. Support incontestable d'une nostalgie manifestée à l'égard de notre passé festif, son intérêt réside en effet dans ses artistes et ses chefs d'oeuvres qu'il convient de reconnaitre et de citer, à l'image du Char de la sculpture de Gustave Bayol (1887), souvent considéré comme l'épitomé de l'art forain en France à l'instar d'un Apollon du Belvédère ou d'un Laocoon dans le registre des sculptures classiques de l'art antique. L'art forain peut en effet être considéré comme un art populaire en ceci qu'il est destiné à la masse, tout en constituant un art décoratif à destination du peuple. Il se caractérise par sa jeunesse tant en termes d'existence historique-sa naissance coïncidant avec le milieu du XIXème siècle et le développement de la société urbaine, que de reconnaissance (1979). Récemment reconsidéré, et réhabilité en France par le biais d'un processus comprenant expositions, catalogues, inventaires et autres publications que cet article s'attachera à décrire, l'art forain a été saisi par un véritable mouvement de prise de conscience patrimoniale.
