8 The heraldic symbol displayed in the Shield of our Fahrni coat of arms represents three leaves of Fern in natural green, in motion on small mounts of sand. The Field , or background, is in warm gold color and the helmet is mounted by a crest of three feathers. Our ancestral Fahrni pedigree was first represented in the Steffisburg area of canton Bern during the early sixteenth Century. Around year 1500, several residents of the village of Farne emigrated to nearby Eriz and as family names were not common in those days, the inhabitants of Eriz identified our ancestors as, say “Hans” von Farne (von = from the village of). FAHRNI of Eriz, Steffisburg, canton Bern, Switzerland -- The coat of arms of the village of Fahrni bears the emblem of a fern leaf on a red background. The name Fahrni originates from the plant Fern ------ (Farn in German) indicating a geographical area where the fern plant was abundant. The patronymic spelling evolved over time from Varne in 1299 to Farn (fern) in the 16th Century, to Farne, to Farni and finally to Fahrni as of the 19th Century. A painting named “Die Mosestafel” dating to 1682 which is located in the old church of Steffisburg bears the coats of arms of its Baptist dissident leaders. One of these coats of arms is that of our direct ancestor Peter Farni (middle) ------ showing also three leaves of fern. The first known Swiss Von Farn coat of arms dates back to 1515 and represents a Von Farn lineage of politicians . Nine generations of Von Farn families partook in the rule of the city of Biel and the Vallon ------ de Saint Imier during a period of almost 300 years. This political dynasty started with Von Farn Hans The First (1505-1570) and ended with Von Farn Nicklaus The Second in 1790. This Von Farn lineage with an identical coat of arms became extinct soon after the French invasion of Switzerland in 1798.
