Flue gas emissions and particle size distribution were investigated during combustion experiments of wood, forest residue and mixtures of these two. The combustion experiments were carried out in a grate fired multi-fuel reactor with and without air staging at stable operation conditions and constant temperature of 850 °C. The overall excess air ratio was held at 1.6, and the primary excess air ratio was 0.8 during air staged experiments. NOx emissions are reduced by air staging. Fly ash particle concentration of forest residues in the flue gas is lower than wood. Aerosols number increased in the staged experiments for fuel blends.

We present a laterally emitting, coupled cavity micro fluidic dye ring laser, suitable for integration into lab-on-a-chip micro systems. The micro-fluidic laser has been successfully designed, fabricated, characterized and modelled. The resonator is formed by a micro-fluidic channel bounded by two isosceles triangle mirrors. The micro-fluidic laser structure is defined using photo lithography in 10 microns thick SU-8 polymer on a glass substrate. The micro fluidic channel is sealed by a glass lid, using PMMA adhesive bonding. The laser is characterized using the laser dye Rhodamine 6G dissolved in ethanol or ethylene glycol as the active gain medium, which is pumped through the micro-fluidic channel and laser resonator. The dye laser is optically pumped normal to the chip plane at 532 nm by a pulsed, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser and lasing is observed with a threshold pump pulse energy flux of around 55 micro-Joule/square-milimeter. The lasing is multi-mode, and the laser has switchable output coupling into an integrated polymer planar waveguide. Tuning of the lasing wavelength is feasible by changing the dye/solvent properties.

Fabrication of microfluidic systems capable of extracting and isolating nucleic acids from biological samples and preparing them for downstream applications within the same device is of interest as on-chip sample preparation reduces the time and effort expended on multi-step benchtop procedures. A microfluidic chip capable of cell lysis, nucleic acid extraction and immobilization has been developed in our laboratory. This report focuses on substrate development and chip integration of the nucleic acid immobilization platform. The immobilization region was initially developed using poly-adenylated mRNA released from normal human lymphoblastoid cells. After immobilization, the mRNA remains functional for amplification by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) gene expression analyses. Hernia surgery has been associated with severe pain within the first 24 h postoperatively. The application of cold or cryotherapy has been in use since at least the time of Hippocrates. The physiological and biological effects from the reduction of temperature in various tissues include local analgesia, inhibited oedema formation and reduced blood circulation. Our hypothesis was that cold therapy, applied by means of ice packs, following inguinal hernia surgery, controlled pain postoperatively. Forty patients scheduled for inguinal hernia repair were enrolled in a double-blind, randomized study. Postoperatively, chipped ice in a plastic bag (cold group), and a plastic bag containing only room temperature water (control) were placed over the incision for 20 min. Postoperative pain data were collected at 2, 6 and 24 h after operation according to the well validated visual analogue scale (VAS). The highest pain levels were recorded 2 h postoperatively for both groups. Pain levels then gradually decreased for both the trial groups during the first 24 h postoperatively. There were significant differences in the VAS scores between the groups at 2, 6 and 24 h. We conclude that local cooling is a safe and effective technique for providing analgesia following inguinal hernia repair.

In this paper we show the possibility of using FAUST (a program-ming language for function based block oriented programming) to create a fast audio processor in a single chip FPGA environment. The produced VHDL code is embedded in the on-chip processor system and utilizes the FPGA fabric for parallel processing. For the purpose of implementing and testing the code a com-plete System-On-Chip framework has been created. We use a Dig-ilent board with a XILINX Virtex 2 Pro FPGA. The chip has a PowerPC 405 core and the framework uses the on chip peripheral bus to interface the core. The content of this paper presents a proof-of-concept imple-mentation using a simple two pole IIR filter. The produced code is working, although more work has to be done for implementing complex arithmetic operations support.

The content of reducing sugars and asparagine, responsible for the formation of acrylamide, was determined in eight Indian potato varieties. Among these, Kufri chipsona-2 and Kufri lavkar showed the lowest level of reducing sugar (680.68 ± 56.50 mg/kg) and asparagine (2074.36 ± 122.27 mg/kg), respectively. The acrylamide content in potato chips prepared from Kufri chipsona-2, the variety that is used commercially in India for making potato chips was also the lowest. Irradiation of this variety of potatoes at the sprout inhibition dose of 60 Gy and subsequent storage for six months showed a 10.7% lower content of reducing sugars at both 14 and 4 °C. The acrylamide content was 8.41% and 6.95% lower in chips from irradiated potatoes stored at 14 and 4 °C than the corresponding non-irradiated controls. The colour of the chips was also better in irradiated potatoes as judged from the L∗ and a∗ values.► Indian varieties of potatoes were screened for their ability to form acrylamide. ► Irradiation reduces sprouting, and hence the reducing sugars. ► Irradiated potatoes showed lower content of acrylamide in potato chips.
