Design of shear reinforcement for beams and columns as per IS:13920 : 1993 is too laborious as it involves computation of moments of resistance of beam sections for the actual area of top and bottom reinforcement provided, since it is an iterative method. The computations are prohibitively time consuming. It was, therefore, felt necessary to formulate design aids. An attempt has been made in this paper to present a concept of design aids which can ease the computation of design shear forces due to formation of plastic hinges at both ends of a beam. Such design aids are expected to greatly simplify the design office work.

Self-healing concretes are being widely recognized as a remedial technique to improve the durability o f concrete. Although, few review papers on self-healing concret e were published, a strong review on all aspects of self-healing concrete cannot be found. In this paper, natural, chemical a nd biological processes of self-healing concrete te chnologies were completely reviewed. The main focus of the study is for the biological processes. The review presents a new insight into the research for the treatment of unexpected cracking o f concrete. The information presented in this paper can be considered significant for biotechnologists and bioprocess eng ineers to have comprehensive updates on the current status-quo of self- healing concrete.

This paper presents a numerical analysis of a short circular hollow column using ABAQUS software. Circular hollow sections have high structural efficiency due to lack of major or minor axes. Such sections are also effective in areas with limited spaces.This paper provides an examination of their performance under axial loading using numerical analysis

An efficient and new but non-intrusive method to detect the fluctuation in gear load may be the motor current signature analysis (MCSA). In this paper, a multi-stage transmission gearbox (with and without defects) has been studied in order to replace the conventional vibration monitoring by MCSA. It has been observed through FFT analysis that low frequencies of the vibration signatures have sidebands across line frequency of the motor current whereas high frequencies of vibration signature are difficult to be detected. Hence, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is suggested to decompose the current signal, and FFT analysis is carried out with the decomposed current signal to trace the sidebands of the high frequencies of vibration

Megaprojects are large, they are constantly growing ever larger, and more and more are being built in what has been called the biggest investment boom in history. This chapter serves as an introduction to megaprojects, and to The Oxford Handbook of Megaproject Management. First, megaprojects are defined and the size of the global megaprojects business is estimated. Second, drivers of the megaproject boom are identified, including monumentalism and the technological sublime. Third, ten things you must know about megaprojects are detailed, from their tendency to suffer from uniqueness bias to their overexposure to black-swan events. Fourth, the "iron law of megaprojects" is identified as a main challenge to megaproject management: "Over budget, over time, under benefits, over and over again." Finally, the main structure of the Handbook is set out as covering the what, the why, and the how of megaproject management, in terms of the challenges, causes, and cures that students of megaprojects must decipher to better understand and better manage megaprojects.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Hisarcik Boron open pit mine located on the west side of central Anatolia near Kütahya province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) level for this site, ground vibration components were measured for 304 shots during bench blasting. In blasting operations, ANFO (blasting agent), gelatin dynamite (priming), and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using two different types of vibration monitors (one White Mini-Seis and one Instantel Minimate Plus Model). The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of PPV. Then, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity obtained from the 565 event records were analyzed statistically. At the end of statistical evaluation of the data pairs, an empirical relation which gives 50% prediction line with a reasonable correlation coefficient was established between PPV and scaled distance.

There may be multiple reasons for these overruns. In order to reduce them, there should be efficient use of the construction softwares available in the market. This paper emphasises the use of these softwares to reduce these issues by the use of a scientific technique called earned value analysis. Earned Value Analysis is an industry standard method of measuring a project's progress at any given point of time, forecasting its completion date and final cost, analysing variances in the schedule and budget as the project proceeds. It is a method for measuring project performance, it indicates how much of the budget should have been spent, in view of the amount of work done and the baseline cost for the task, assignment and resources. The analysis helps in finding out the deviations both in cost as well as in time i.e. schedule variance and cost variance. This paper emphasizes on the use of this techniques in modern softwares such as Microsoft Project and Oracle Primavera P6 in order to exercise better management over the project.

The data refer to yearly disaggregated (SITC 5 digit level) maritime trade flows on 277 trade routes. Normal concrete is a mixture of cement, water, fine and coarse aggregates. Concrete mix design involves selecting the correct proportions of these constituent materials to produce concrete having the specified properties. Various mix design methods have some limitations. Time, energy and money are sometimes being wasted in order to get the appropriate mix proportions. In this paper, a mathematical model based on simplex method is formulated for the optimization of concrete cube strength. The model can provide all the possible mix ratios that can yield the desired concrete cube strength. It can also produce the concrete cube strength if mix proportions are given as well as the optimum value. Statistical tests were used to verify the adequacy of the model. They all agreed to the acceptance of the model.

Since always and whatever the category, professional divers encountered a lot of accidents which are, due to the environment often lethal.  As the causes of these accidents are often the same, the purpose of the present article is to highlight those most frequently encountered and therefore no less than 577 diving fatalities spread over the last forty years have been analyzed in this study. The results of the survey led to the conclusion that many of these accidents could have been avoided.
