La diffusione dell’Utopia di Thomas More coincide con momenti di straordinaria tensione politica e sociale. La sua fortuna editoriale, col favorire un’ampia circolazione delle idee dell’autore anche negli ambienti vicini alla Riforma radicale, poteva suscitare prima o poi il desiderio di tradurle in pratica. Quando ai primi di maggio del 1525 apparve il libretto luterano contro i contadini tedeschi, la loro rivolta aveva raggiunto la massima espansione. Lutero attaccava con veemenza Thomas Müntzer, associandolo ai contadini nell’accusa di banditismo per delegittimarne l’azione e smascherarlo come falso profeta. Müntzer possedeva tuttavia una cultura notevole e conosceva Erasmo, Platone e probabilmente anche More. La condivisione dei beni, che avvicinava Platone e l’umanista More al cristianesimo evangelico, sarà per il riformatore di Allstedt – diventata l’anti-Wittenberg – un sogno profetico da realizzare in un Regno terreno di Cristo senza empi e peccatori, regolato da principi di moralità e giustizia in coerenza con la parola di Dio. Ma Lutero, con la sua realistica apologia della repressione, poneva le premesse teoriche per il massacro di Frankenhausen e la nascita di un ethos militare della Riforma.

This paper tries to answer why the perception of the Devil changed a tempter doing God's will in the early medieval period, into an autonomous evil power waging war against God and Christendom by the early modern period.  To answer this, the paper looks at changes in theological understandings, major historic events, and artistic interpretations of the Devil.

Scopo dichiarato dell’ordine dei cavalieri di Santo Stefano, fondato nel 1561 da Cosimo I de’ Medici anche per motivi di legittimazione dinastica, fu la difesa della cristianità dalla minaccia ottomana. La politica aggressiva nei confronti dei Turchi, praticata attraverso la guerra di corsa e gli attacchi per mare alle piazzeforti ottomane in vari punti del Mediterraneo, praticata in modo ancora moderato da Cosimo e Francesco de’ Medici, venne ripresa con forza da Ferdinando I, che ne fece un fiore all’occhiello del Granducato nel confronto con le analoghe attività delle altre potenze europee, e poi soprattutto da suo figlio Cosimo II e suo nipote Ferdinando II. In coincidenza con i tre granduchi l’uso di strumenti di comunicazione e propaganda relativi alle imprese navali dei cavalieri, relativamente poco presente fino alla fine del Cinquecento, divenne un progetto sistematico che vide nella prima metà del Seicento la pubblicazione di numerose relazioni, la loro ristampa in altre città italiane, e la loro traduzione, ristampa, o ripresa anche in altre nazioni europee (soprattutto in Spagna), con il coinvolgimento nella veicolazione complessiva dei contenuti anche di intellettuali come il poeta Gabriello Chiabrera. Il saggio mette in rilievo il carattere sistematico della produzione di relazioni sulle imprese dei cavalieri di Santo Stefano contro i Turchi nel corso del Seicento, illuminandone gli aspetti produttivi e il successo editoriale, ed evidenziandone anche i rapporti con la produzione di tipo più letterario.

Valérie Piétri L'apparition du nobiliaire, en tant que nouveau genre littéraire et savant, permet sans doute de saisir une des inflexions majeures de la culture généa-logique française, à la croisée des transformations de l'état monarchique, de l'identité nobiliaire et des particularismes provinciaux. Des généalogies collectives aux nobiliaires, puis aux dictionnaires et histoires de la noblesse, la pratique généalogique rend compte de la manière dont le monde social est travaillé par la question des origines et par des conflits de légitimité qui s'emboîtent à différentes échelles. La Provence peut constituer un observatoire privilégié de l'évolution de ces formes de dispositifs textuels et graphique s d'une culture généalogique, héraldique et historique telle qu'elle est appropriée et diffusée par des auteurs provinciaux. En contre-point, d'autres cas provinciaux peuvent apporter des éclairages complé-mentaires sur des phénomènes globalement très similaires. La publication d'un nobiliaire constitue un véritable événement qui dépasse le simple champ littéraire ou du moins participe de manière exemplaire des pouvoirs de la littérature car, en offrant au public une « description », un « état » de la noblesse d'un pays, le nobiliaire construit, tout autant qu'il donne à voir, une réalité sociale. In occasione dell’Anno Europeo del Patrimonio Culturale 2018 il Dipartimento di Beni Culturali dell’Università di Bologna ha promosso e organizzato un convegno internazionale, tenutosi a Ravenna nei giorni 21-23 novembre 2018, attraverso il quale, sotto l’umbrella subject del Grand Tour, indagare gli aspetti storici ed attuali relativi al valore
culturale e turistico delle diverse tipologie di beni rientranti nel largo concetto di ‘patrimonio culturale’. Il consesso, strutturato in cinque specifiche sessioni cui hanno partecipato studiosi italiani, francesi, spagnoli ed ungheresi, ha voluto anche dare avvio ad un percorso di valorizzazione delle diverse, ma integrate, competenze e attitudini di
ricerca presenti nel Dipartimento, evidenziando così la multidisciplinarietà che lo caratterizza e la trasversalità di talune indagini e riflessioni scientifiche. Con la pubblicazione degli atti del convegno ravennate non solo si è voluto approfondire storicamente i concetti di patrimonio culturale, viaggio, e turismo, distinti, o collegati nell'ambito del fenomeno del Grand Tour, ma si è inteso esprimere soprattutto la valenza del concetto di condivisione sociale e culturale, che ha permesso fenomeni di vasta portata e di grande incidenza nella storia pubblica come appunto questo del Grand Tour. La condivisione ha implicato nel tempo un percorso complesso di conoscenza dell’altro da sé e sia che si tratti di individui, che delle loro reti sociali, che ancora delle loro sovrastrutture culturali. The First of the Modern Ottomans blends biography with intellectual history. On the one hand, it is the story of an Ottoman life – the life of the scribe, ambassador, and prolific historian Ahmed Vâsıf (ca. 1735-1806), a man who improbably rose from obscurity in Baghdad to travel the empire, fight its wars, advise its sultans, and, in time, write its history. As a full-scale biography, the book is a rarity for the field of Ottoman history and reconstructs Vâsıf’s life, career, and opinions through meticulous research in both Ottoman and European sources. On the other hand, The First of the Modern Ottomans is also one of the first detailed intellectual studies of the early modern Ottoman Empire. Weaving together Vâsıf’s life and thought with the larger intellectual currents of the day – especially at the court of Sultan Selim III in Istanbul – it explores central debates among the Ottoman ruling elite over Europe, political reform, war and peace, justice, and the empire’s renewal. Vâsıf’s life reveals a vital response to the empire’s challenges at the turn of the nineteenth century – one that was novel and deeply enmeshed in Islamic philosophy, ethics, and statecraft.

Fracasado el Coloquio de Poissy (1561), y desestimada en consecuencia toda posibilidad de reconciliación bajo una única fe, la concordia dejará paso a la tolerancia. Será el canciller Michel de L’Hôpital (1504-1573) el encargado de enarbolar el nuevo estandarte, y el Edicto de Enero (1562) el marco legal de la pretendida coexistencia pacífica entre las confesiones. Ideal fugaz y fallido que dará lugar, tan sólo dos meses más tarde, con la matanza de Vassy, a un extenso período de guerras civiles de religión. Múltiples y variados serán los intentos filosóficos por hacer frente a esta profunda crisis de descomposición política y religiosa que afectará a Francia con particular virulencia. De entre esos intentos de respuesta, son sólo dos -y con extrema brevedad, por cierto- los que pretendemos presentar a lo largo de este escrito. En primer lugar referiremos a la posición de Jean Bodin (1530-1596), quien en su Repúblique (1576), y ante el gran poderío adquirido en pocos años por las diversas facciones -como la Liga Católica o el ejército hugonote-, propondrá la instauración de un poder político superior a cada una ellas. Un poder absoluto y sin vínculos religiosos. En segundo lugar daremos la palabra a Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592), quien desde una perspectiva escéptica, y conociendo los numerosos inconvenientes políticos que pueden provocar los cambios repentinos en la legislación, presentará en sus Ensayos (1580) una dura batalla contra los hugonotes. Del mismo modo en que Bodin había llegado a creer que la solución a la crisis de la fe podía ser alcanzada a través de la instauración de único rey, Montaigne concluirá que el mejor modo de evitar la desintegración será admitir una única ley.

John Davenant, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity and a British delegate to the Synod of Dordt, was a widely praised English Reformed theologian, but his exposition of the doctrine of predestination has been largely neglected. The present essay shows that, for Davenant, Thomas Aquinas remained among the “sounder scholastics,” whose views on predestination and free choice aligned closely with Reformed theology and helped to illustrate the traditionalism of Reformed theology in the face of Jesuit and Arminian theological innovation.

During the reign of James II/VII Stuart (1685-1688), the political, diplomatic and cultural relations between the British court and the Italian states flourished as never before. This was due above all to the Roman-Catholic faith of the king and the lively personality of his consort Maria Beatrice d’Este («Mary of Modena»), while the growing English economic power was acquiring commercial dominance in the Mediterranean area. With the help of thousands of unpublished papers, the book by Alessandro Cont reconstructs the British diplomatic network in Italy during this period, the personalities and orientations of the ministers of Italian princes accredited to the court of Whitehall, the queen’s dynastic policy and the peculiar characteristics of her Italian entourage of chaplains, servants, artists and musicians.

This paper explores in detail the 37 carved cadaver monuments that exist in England (ECCMs). These monuments have been described by Panofsky as having a lifelike effigy and ‘showing the deceased as a mere corpse, wrapped only in a shroud which … may reveal much of his nude form as was compatible with modesty, but nearly always divested of all signs of worldly power and wealth, and often represented in a state of more or less advanced decomposition’. Dating between c1420/1425 and 1588, 10 of these now conform to Panofsky’s ‘double-decked tomb’ design (11 originally), including 1 of a female, whilst the remaining 27 (originally 26) are of his ‘isolated transi’ design  (1964: 64). Having examined all the 37 ECCMs, I argue that most of these sculptures actually depict a naked emaciated individual very recently deceased. Whilst 2 do show an open chest cavity, close inspection of them reveals muscle definition or bodily form rather than skeletal frame, and thus the rotting description of Panofsky and later scholars, is debatable. My recent work on these late-medieval memorials, as well as examining their form, places them in the context of purgatorial punishments as well as prayers for the dead, and I posit that the notion of post-mortem sentience is required to enable a contemporary interpretation of their original function. 
This paper then will present my ‘take’ on the form and function of these transis, giving an overview of them, particularly in terms of shroud style, and given that anatomisation was rare during the period, also their anatomical accuracy (or otherwise), as both aspects I argue, give us potential clues on their manufacture. It will also discuss my findings that two of these ECCMs (in 1 specific church) have been deliberately swopped around possibly during the church’s restructuring in the Victorian-era, and will highlight the web site I have set up on these sculptures (see http://eccm37.wix.com/eccm).

Despite their numerous similarities, Marranos in inquisitorial Spain and Recusants (and the so-called ‘Church Papists’), English Crypto-Catholics, in the wake of the English religious reforms, have rarely been studied concurrently. In this paper I will argue that secrecy was a central feature of the daily lives of both these minorities, and it helped them function as groups despite their internal diversity, experiencing a wide array of expressions of belonging. The elasticity of the groups’ religious practices clearly contributed to the rise of new forms of worship and to the creation of new ritual objects which could be validated by diasporic belief systems. As a consequence, beyond criticisms, these communities functioned as significant vectors of change in how their entire religious groups practiced their faiths. Ultimately, it appears that both Crypto-Jews and Crypto-Catholics existed as cohesive groups as much because their members shared religious practices as due to the diasporic culture of martyrdom.

Who was Catalina de Erauso, the Lieutenant Nun? Swashbuckler, brawler, hard-headed businessperson, soldier, gallant, celebrity, transvestite, nun? How can one fail to be fascinated by her? A woman, yet a man; a soldier, yet a nun; Spanish, yet Basque. Catalina de Erauso embodied the contradictions and conflicts of the Early Modern Period, but she also transcended them in her own way. She became a stage on which we see how tensions between different identities played out in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Spain, particularly the tensions between two sexual identities, male and female, and between the competing and multiple national "identities" already defined and being defined within that new thing that was "Spain." This book explores the different facets of Erauso's persona: her sexual identity and the factors that determined her choice of gender roles; and her Basque origin and its impact on her life and her self-image.

A atenção dos historiadores portugueses tem-se polarizado em torno do estudo das elites e dos grupos populares, concedendo pouca atenção aos setores da população que não se enquadram nessas duas categorias extremas. A presente tese tem como objetivo central aumentar o conhecimento sobre a composição do património, as casas, os modos de habitar e o consumo das camadas intermédias. Ao longo do primeiro capitulo examinamos o uso das expressões "estado do meio", "gente do meio", mediania, "classe média", em Portugal, com particular ênfase para os séculos XVII e XVIII, momento em que este vocabulário se difundiu e ganhou adeptos. Com este estudo pretendemos sublinhar, por um lado, a multiplicidade dos esquemas de representação social e taxonomias que coexistiram no período em análise e, por outro, provar que, apesar de estranho ao discurso legal e enquadramento normativo da época em análise, a noção de mediania e as visões da sociedade que a incluem estavam difundidas, em Portugal, nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Esta análise serve também para fundamentar a nossa opção terminológica pela designação de grupos intermédios. No segundo capitulo empreendemos uma discussão das categorias sociológicas e do modelo de análise a adotar. Explicamos porque é que, mesmo considerando que no período e espaços considerado a sociedade portuguesa se traduzia oficialmente em ordens e estados, a dissecamos a partir de categorias sociológicas que se aproximam mais de classe do que de ordem ou estado. Não uma classe no sentido marxista, mas uma classe que se define num espaço multidimensional que dá relevo ao estatuto, mas também aos aspetos económicos. Seguem-se considerações metodológicas com a análise da principal fonte documental usada, ou seja, os inventários de bens, sublinhando-se as fragilidades e os pontos fortes. O terceiro capítulo corresponde à análise do contexto ou, de outra forma, do quadro geográfico, demográfico, social, económico e político da cidade de Lisboa, que elegemos como pano de fundo para a análise dos grupos intermédios. No quarto capítulo, procedemos à caracterização da amostra e, no quinto, focamos os níveis de riqueza, a composição do património e o consumo das camadas intermédias. No sexto e sétimo capítulos lançamos um olhar multidisciplinar às casas, ao espaço de interação privada das camadas intermédias, que é perspetivado primeiramente como espaço de habitação e depois como espaço de consumo.
Assim, no sexto capítulo procuramos conhecer o habitat das camadas intermédias urbanas ao nível do regime de propriedade que ligava os agregados às suas casas, do valor médio de avaliação das habitações, das tipologias predominantes, do número de andares, áreas, número de divisões e especialização funcional. Na segunda parte deste capítulo, debruçamo-nos sobre casos de estudo, procurando integrar os edifícios na cidade, saber quem eram as pessoas que os habitavam, o que faziam, como é que os espaços eram usados e que conceção de vida se revela nos mesmos. No último capítulo analisamos a casa como espaço de consumo. Incidindo o nosso olhar sobre a realidade nacional e partindo da observação da relação entre posição social e a posse de objetos, debruçamo-nos sobre a participação das camadas intermédias lisboetas no processo de aumento da posse de objetos de luxo. Para isso estudamos a difusão de objetos de luxo nos grupos intermédios, comparando-a com a dos grupos socioeconómicos mais e menos favorecidos. Por outro lado, seguimos as pistas do processo de privatização. Procuramos detetar o avanço do privado no quotidiano doméstico, seja no património, no espaço arquitetónico e na cultura material atras da análise da difusão de equipamento doméstico conotado com a privatização, pelo que esta análise é transversal, perpassando vários capítulos.

A 2017 Choice Outstanding Academic Title

In this volume, Elisabeth Fraser shows that artists and the works they created in the Mediterranean during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were informed by mutual dependence and reciprocity between European nations and the Ottoman Empire. Her rich exploration of this vibrant cross-cultural exchange challenges the dominant interpretation of European relations with the East during the period, revealing a shared world of fluid and long-sustained interactions.

Voyagers to and from the Ottoman Empire documented their journeys in prints, paintings, and lavishly illustrated travelogues; many of these helped define Europe’s self-identified role as heir to Ottoman civilizations and bolstered its presence in the Islamic Mediterranean and beyond. Fraser finds that these works illuminate not only how travelers’ experiences abroad were more nuanced than the expansionist ideology with which they became associated, but also how these narratives depicted the vitality of Ottoman culture and served as extensions of Ottoman diplomacy. Ottomans were aware of and responded to European representations, using them to defend Ottoman culture and sovereignty. In embracing the art of both cultures and setting these works in a broader context, Fraser challenges the dominant historiographical tradition that sees Ottoman artists adopting European modes of art in a one-sided process of “Europeanization.”

Theoretically informed and rigorously researched, this cross-cultural approach to European and Ottoman art sheds much-needed critical light on the widely disseminated travel images of the era—important cultural artifacts in their own right—and provides a fresh and inviting understanding of the relationships among cultures in the Mediterranean during an era of increasing European expansionism.
