"It is important to establish the “Proto-dynamo” as concept that represents an entirely new paradigm of economic infrastructure. The concept alludes to the “dynamo” which is a machine that uses opposing magnetic forces to efficiently produce/convert energy. The principle behind the dynamo is to use opposing forces within the same machine to get a consolidated output of energy. If the new paradigm of “protodynamism” can be represented by an electrical generator, the old paradigm of Keynesian theory can be represented by a meat grinder in which ten pounds of product goes in one side, and six ounces of tasteless sausage comes out the funnel possibly tainted with formaldehyde or some random pesticide that is unpronounceable. "

Last year, at this conference, I discussed how distinctions between nature and culture, and humans and animals, can arise from the technical processes of food production (see "Food as an object of cultural technical study "). Drawing on the work of cultural techniques (e.g. Siegert 2015; Vismann 2013) and Levi-Strauss' The Raw and the Cooked (1970), I argued that the relationship between humans and food is primary to how the human understands itself and forms part of the ground of human ontological systems. I'd like to take this argument further today, to a system-level perspective of food production and beyond, to a posthuman future where food no longer resembles what we know it as today, and because of this, where the human as such arguably ceases to exist, as the ground upon which it has defined self and species is transcended. I'm responding both to fictional future food visions and aspirations towards technical solutions to our current food-related crises.

Over the last thirty years we have witnessed the emergence, formation and consolidation in Australia of the field of futures studies and foresight. Given its relative population size and geographic isolation from major centres of intellectual activity in Europe and North America, Australia has more than its fair share of futures researchers and practitioners (often called Futurists or Foresight Practitioners). Perhaps even more surprising to some is what the unwritten history reveals. This short piece shows that a significant number of the pioneers and shapers of Australian futures studies were women. Furthermore, a large proportion of futurists, researchers and foresight practitioners in Australia today are women.
The following “annotated time line” covers the last three decades from 1985 to 2015. It has been sectioned into three phases, roughly corresponding with the decades of “Pioneers”, “Institution Building” and “Professional Consolidation”. As we now move into a fourth decade of Australian futures practices we can ask “How will the contributions of Australian women futures researchers and foresight practitioners contribute to, and further develop, the complex futures for Australia and our global society?”

The presence of arts and cultural institutions and networks is vital to the health of any global city, old, and new. But it is less apparent how we measure their contributions to quality of life issues in the rapidly changing mega cities of the global north or south.

How do we develop quantitative and qualitative measurements to assess the impact of arts and culture on the quality of life in cities? How do we balance issues of social justice and creativity in cities where the super-rich and the ultra-poor of the world reside and often collide? What is the role of public and private sectors in creating a healthy cultural ecology in a global city? How do we measure value beyond the economic impact of the arts—numbers of tickets sold, number of tourists visiting the city, the gentrification of a neighborhood? What are the key ingredients for a healthy cultural ecology of the city, taking into account artists, large established institutions as well as smaller arts organizations?  What are the barriers to the successful implementation of cultural policy in global cities?


Columbia University’s Committee on Global Thought, in partnership with Ford Foundation and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), organized a one-day
program to bring together scholars, policy makers, private sector and non-profit leaders, and practitioners—artists, architects, planners, community activists—to discuss some of these urgent issues around developing a better understanding of the role arts and culture can play in the social health of global cities.

My MLitt dissertation is concerned with how connections between human and nonhuman objects, hyperobjects and temporality are represented in contemporary anthropocene literature, namely Ben Lerner's novel 10:04 and Tom McCarthy's Satin Island. Through an ethical and aesthetic framework, I ask: how can the novel explore the ecological thought and how is narrative form uniquely capable of synthesising other artistic and textual practices in a way that conveys and embodies the feedback loops of irony, aesthetic causality and ‘deep time’ characteristic of hyperobjects, ecological disaster and object encounters within the anthropocene?

ABSTRACT – Taking my cue from James Scott’s opening provocation-question in “Against the Grain: A Deep History of the Earliest States” (“How did Homo sapiens sapiens come, so very recently in its species history, to live in crowded, sedentary communities packed with domesticated livestock and a handful of cereal grains?” — 2017: 1), in this paper I engage with both past and present forms of mimetic density and acceleration, including current calls for radical metamorphosis (Latour 2021) and the new dawn of everything (Graeber and Wengrow 2021), to advance the counter-position I took recently around a further question: “Can we change the way we change?” (Pedriali 2021: 169). In that essay, I went on to suspect that the involved you of the reader had rather I disagreed with the implications of my question. This is why on this occasion I want to insist just once more, and put the further “Could you have stopped us?” I phrased there (2021: 169, 171) to the renewed test of productive disagreement with dominant theoretical positions on the futurability of change for our mimetic species.

Kategoria widma Derridy posłużyła Marcowi przede wszystkim do rozważań nad charakterem współczesności i przeobrażeń, jakie dokonały się w obrębie myśli ponowoczesnej. Współczesna kultura, zdaniem Marca, stała się miejscem powstawania widm, nieustannie powracających z przeszłości. Uznając, że nie jesteśmy już w stanie tworzyć utopijnych wizji przyszłości, autor stara się zdać sprawę z widmowego charakteru współczesnej kultury, analizując m. in. strategie vintage, retro, nurt no future w kulturze lat 70. czy nurt fantastyki naukowej w literaturze.

This contribution discusses the emergent field of Intergenerational Justice (IJ) with an aim to drawing new light upon issues in conservation. Several key issues in IJ are discussed that allow heritage conservation to be contextualised. Methods and debates from IJ are described and related to conservation practice. The paper is not an exhaustive review, but identifies links to pertinent issues in conservation.

Summary: This article discusses the Swedish discourse on futures studies in the late
1960s and early 1970s. It focuses on the futures discourse of the group appointed by
the Prime Minister, Olof Palme, in 1967 under the chairmanship of Alva Myrdal.
The Swedish futures discourse focused on futures studies as a democratic means of
reform in defence of the Swedish model and ‘‘Swedish’’ values of solidarity and
equality, in opposition to an international futurology dominated by the Cold War
and dystopic narratives of global disaster. The article suggests that the creation of
Swedish futures studies, culminating in a Swedish institute for futures studies, can
be seen as a highpoint of postwar planning and the Swedish belief in the possibility
of constructing a particularly Swedish future from a particularly Swedish past.

In 2013, I proposed using drones to extinguish future forest fires. Admittedly, both the idea and the technology were crude, and proposing an idea like this is not the same as implementing a solution. During the first few minutes, between the time when a fire first starts and when it reaches a point of being out of control, is a containment window where only a few gallons of water or a few pounds of fire retardant is necessary to put the evil genie back into its bottle. Using a fleet of surveillance drones, equipped with special infrared cameras, fires can be spotted during the earliest moments of a containment window, signaling a fleet of extinguisher drones to douse the blaze before anything serious happens. Drones specifically designed for extinguishing forest fires have the potential to eliminate virtually 100% of the devastating fires that dominate newspaper headlines every summer. But is that what we want?

In the last decade, the notion of uncertainty has gained prominence in anthropological debates. So has the debate on future. Yet, the conceptualisation of uncertainty has barely been linked to the future(s) and its temporal relations. This lack of linkage seems astonishing in so far as uncertainty relates closely to the unpredictability of the future. Uncertain situations engender ambivalent experiences and affects towards an unknown future embracing hope, desire and opportunity as well as fear, despair and suffering. Theoretically, the future is always unknown and unpredictable, but usually people are able to anticipate the future as it is more conversant than in uncertain situations, which challenge future outlooks and knowledge practices. Anthropologists have dedicated atten- tion to uncertain situations ranging from everyday uncertainties under precarious conditions to crises and critical events of individual or collective existential uncertainty.

The world in which we live and work is a rapidly changing place, and only by looking ahead can we prepare ourselves today for what might happen in the future. An ongoing three-year research project at the universities of Loughborough, Reading and Salford is now at the half-way stage and the three institutions have worked together in a complimentary and collaborative manner in order to fulfil the project objectives and produce some initial preliminary research findings. The objective of the research is to identify and understand the challenges and opportunities confronting the UK construction sector over the next 10 to 20 years and to investigate ways to mitigate and/or exploit them. To date, 24 workshops have been conducted and nearly 70 causal maps and future scenarios produced. Présentée comme essentiellement rurale, l’Afrique de l’Ouest s’urbanise rapidement à la fois en raison de la croissance de la population urbaine, de la prolifération de nouvelles petites agglomérations qui franchissent chaque année le seuil de l’urbain et par le développement des métropoles, et un peu de l’exode rural. Les équilibres entre pôles urbains et campagnes s’en trouvent nécessairement modifiés. En 2020, le développement des territoires ouest-africains ne permet plus de considérer l’espace rural comme un espace abandonné par l’État, enclavé, éloigné des services de base et rythmé par la pratique de l’agriculture pluviale. C’est en réalité un assemblage de campagnes dynamiques et en recomposition permanente qui ne connaissent pas une évolution homogène et qui jouent un rôle prépondérant dans l’urbanisation. Si le sentiment d’abandon et d’isolement de certaines populations demeure, le monde rural se décline aujourd’hui différemment avec une grande diversité d’activités économiques. De façon générale, la mobilité des ruraux, leurs comportements sociaux, économiques et démographiques évoluent. L’enjeu de ces transformations est de taille au regard du contexte démographique sous-régional, puisque l’espace rural ouest-africain devrait abriter en 2030 plus de personnes qu’il n’en accueille aujourd’hui.
Après avoir caractérisé la diversité des espaces ruraux en 2020 ainsi que leurs rapports aux pôles urbains, cette analyse développe, sous un jour résolument prospectif, les facteurs déterminants de leurs évolutions qui sont leur démographie, leur gouvernance, leurs activités économiques et le contexte mondial. Elle présente les "tendances lourdes" d’évolution dont la probabilité est importante à horizon 2040, les "émergences" ou phénomènes nouvellement observés mais dont la propagation est susceptible de modifier les situations observées dans les champs d’études considérés tout comme les "incertitudes majeures" que soulèvent les évolutions des espaces ruraux. Non exhaustive, cette première recension permet d’esquisser en conclusion des hypothèses d’évolution de ces espaces ruraux à horizon 2040.

In this article, we explore and discuss how educational trajectories relate to the overall learning lives of students. Sociocultural studies have examined the use of artefacts, cultural resources and literacy practices as part of human developments over time. Our interest is about how digital technologies create new possibilities for futuremaking in the intersection between formal and informal ways of learning. We will provide personal narratives of three young people that are deeply engaged in creative activities involving new technology; gaming, k-pop and Lego Robotics. The analysis show how digital technologies and media practices become resources when creating futures for themselves.

This paper revisits Nicholas Grimshaw’s Eden Project in Cornwall, UK to interrogate architecture’s relation to neoliberalism. It looks to this project as a means to open a speculative approach for architectural scholarship to engage neoliberal society beyond familiar critiques thereof. Eden, I argue, coordinates its spaces, technologies and objects to project a temporality that seems to lack both past and future in favour of presenting time as continuous, homogeneous, bound to the perpetual management of the present – what I call ‘ecological time’. This project shows that, in the theatre of neoliberal governmentality, the present is the object of design, and ‘design’ becomes indistinguishable from the technological management of the world.

This report presents the major findings of the research project Kasi – Future
Information Security Trends (Kasi – tulevaisuuden tietoturvatrendit) conducted by
Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and VTT Technical Research
Centre of Finland. The project is a part of Tekes Safety and Security Research Program
(Tekesin Turvallisuus-ohjelma) and its purpose is to provide rigorous and systematic
foreseeing knowledge for the implementation of the Finnish National Information
Security Strategy (kansallinen tietoturvastrategia).
The aim of the project was to study near-future information security issues that are
related to, for example, new technologies, services, and business models. Our approach
combines perspectives from different disciplines in order to better address the
complexity of the focus area. We identified relevant future information security trends
especially from the Finnish viewpoint in the next five to ten years by collecting and
analysing specialists’ conceptions and knowledge of the various developments in their
professional fields. In order to deepen the analysis, we also specified factors and
attributes that affect the realization of the trends. In addition, our objective was to
evaluate the need for establishing a separate program for continuous foreseeing
activities and provide methodological and procedural guidelines for carrying it out.
Our research process went through five separate steps: 1) outlining possible future
environments, 2) creating concrete future scenarios or stories, 3) analyzing information
security issues in the scenarios, 4) identifying information security trends, and 5)
specifying factors and attributes that affect the realization of the trends. Our major
findings concerning the future information security trends in Finland in a 5 to 10 years
scale are the following:
1. The interdependency between societal processes and information systems increases
2. New interdependencies between organizations and the state emerge
3. Information security issues become more international
4. Needs to manage private or confidential information and public appearances in ICT
environments increase
5. Protection of personal data becomes a considerable political issue
6. It becomes increasingly difficult to ensure the correctness of information
7. The correctness of information becomes increasingly important
8. Data gathering increases
9. Data combination from different sources increases
10. Traceability of persons and goods increases
11. Malicious action against information systems increases
12. Quality and security issues are increasingly taken into account in software
development
13. Automation/autonomous systems are increasingly employed to effect security
14. Availability of information increases as the public information resources are opened
15. Commercial interests drive actors to restrict access to proprietary information
resources
16. Governance of access to information resources in organizations becomes more
difficult
Realization and intensity of the trends are dependent on several factors that we have
categorized as societal, economic, technological, and legal. The factors have either
intensifying or constraining effects on the trends and the intensity of their effect varies.
We believe our work on future information security trends and issues and on the
methodological questions of reliable foreseeing activities provides relevant information
for commercial, policy and scientific interests. We propose that in order to get reliable
foreseeing results in the long term, the process of identifying future information
security trends should be continuous. While the continuous process would also provide
grounds for improving the foreseeing method, this project sets a firm starting point with
practical guidelines and the first round of results.

Executive summary: Exploring alternative feasible futures through engaging in a collaborative futures scenario development process has identified and prioritized a series of Key Actions for the ECI and its member organisations over the next 10 to 20 years. The very real challenges of how to most effectively address uncertain futures and rapidly changing working environments catalysed this work. De todos los Fernando Pessoa posibles, el autor de los textos sobre Iberia es uno de los más desconocidos y más frecuentemente olvidados. Un Fernando Pessoa entrañado en la realidad de su tiempo, que participa activamente en el debate sobre la siempre candente cuestión peninsular no corresponde, sin duda, al paradigma tradicional que tantas veces se nos ha impuesto, y que dibujaba un retrato del poeta portugués como alguien recluido en sí mismo y distante con respecto a los movimientos sociales que le tocó vivir. Nada, probablemente, más lejos de la realidad. Pessoa no fue ajeno a ninguno de los grandes sucesos históricos, ni ahorró esfuerzos a la hora de escribir sobre los mismos. La “cuestión ibérica” es uno de ellos, un signo de los tiempos sobre el que el autor de Mensagem reflexionó y escribió, llegando a imaginar un libro titulado como éste que el lector tiene ahora entre sus manos, en el que hiciese su personal aportación a la rica y plural tradición iberista en la Península.

The aim of this paper is to investigate some of Robert Jungk’s (1913-1994) most significant theses regarding nuclear weapons, comparing them on the one hand with the perspectives of the “philosopher of hope”, Ernst Bloch (1885-1977), and, on the other hand, with the “thinker of despair”, Günther Stern, known as Günther Anders (1900-1992). The affinities be- tween Anders and Bloch can be found in their engagement in the nuclear issues, but also in the common consideration of the philosophy of praxis as a device and “organon” of critical thinking. The persistent trust in the future and in the modifiability of the world and of the humanity implies a strong difference between the positions of the two intellectuals. In this di- rection Jungk’s remarks instead reveal unexpected contacts with the phi- losopher Ernst Bloch and with his topic of a concrete utopia.

Following the death of 17-year-old Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen who committed suicide after forced “conversion therapy,” President Barack Obama called for a nationwide ban on psychotherapy aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity. The administration argued that because conversion therapy causes substantial psychological harm to minors, it is neither medically nor ethically appropriate. We fully agree with the President and believe that this is a step in the right direction. Of course, in addition to being unsafe as well as ethically unsound, current conversion therapy approaches aren’t actually effective at doing what they claim to do – changing sexual orientation. But we also worry that this may be a short-term legislative solution to what is really a conceptual problem. The question we ought to be asking is “what will happen if and when scientists do end up developing safe and effective technologies that can alter sexual orientation?”

Utilitarian concerns increasingly drive machine ethics, particularly the few ethical discussions in learning analytics. Determining the most good for the most people is a responsible way forward, but perhaps not the most comprehensive, especially when assessing potential outcomes. Innovations in learning analytics may occur more rapidly and with better outcomes if informed ethical discussions occur at every step of development.

Modern science has been plagued by a dualistic view of nature for some time. This duality could be called the Cartesian Paradox because its origin dates back to the work of René Descartes during the Scientific Revolution and his separation of the world of nature into two parts, mind and matter. This dualism was necessary at the time for the development as well as the later evolution of science, but has become far too limiting in modern science. Science has now come to a crossroad where it must solve the Cartesian Paradox and this dualistic approach to understanding nature or retreat in its path of progress. However, in most cases this dualism has been grossly overlooked and even rejected as real by modern science because it is so fundamental and deeply embedded in the human and scientific psyches that it is easily overlooked as a problem.

The article focuses on the non-centered, non-hierarchical structure of life- tasks, which consists of stable periods of life from contentfulness, efficiency, and energy, while in crisis situations the value of creativity, adequacy and openness increases.  It was shown the macro-, meso- and micro-environmental factors, which determine the setting of life-tasks and, accordingly, their variable structural configuration. These are factors of sociocultural contextuality, dialogic communication, multiple identities, axiological originality, and individual semantics.

Following the principle of the “marabout, bout de ficelle…” (a children play with words connecting the end of a word, with the sound of the following one), this new conference cycle wish to explore the future fields of design in curiosity and an open mind. The first peaker bring the next one, this concatenation, or “marabout-chain”, will bring to the light approaches that are less visible to the general public, more underground, or even minority, but which constitute the breeding ground of tomorrow's design. This is the first curation to be constructed on this self-generative principle, a way to not giving room for voices in the centre, but to the margins, and as JL Godard said, “the margins hold the page together”.

Max Mollon is out first “marabout”. He is designer, teacher and Ph.D. candidate in the SACRe programme at ENSAD and at Telecom ParisTech. He questionnes the “Design Fiction” practice, and explore new forms which seats between anticipation and social critique, between contestastion and counter-power.

Does design fiction fast-forward innovation, straight into the wall?
Facing complex crisises and polarised opinions in contemporary society debates, can one resist problem-solving, one of design's usual mission, to rather question issues deeper?
This is Max Mollon's intention, which conflictual artefacts open a breach: a spaace for confrontation to others and to dominant visions; a space for attention and mutual-understanding. For this, he pushes the Critical Design, Speculative Design and Design Fiction practices out of the contemporary art world. However, what are the role for such practices in society? Come and join the debate!

Talk by Max Mollon followed by a debate with Tiphaine Kazi-Tani (designer researhcer, Cité du design de St-Etienne) and David Benqué (designer researcher, Royal College of Arts, London) and a dialogue with the audience.

Le Design Fiction relance-t-il l'innovation… droit dans le mur ? @Centre_Pompidou
Sur le principe du « marabout, bout de ficelle… » ce nouveau cycle souhaite explorer le champ prospectif du design dans un esprit d’ouverture et de curiosité. Un invité en amenant un autre, cette concaténation ou chaine « maraboutesque » mettra en lumière des démarches moins visibles du grand public, plus souterraines, voir minoritaires mais qui font la richesse et le terreau du design de demain. Il s’agit de la première programmation à se construire sur un principe d'auto-génération, moyen de ne plus donner la parole au centre mais aux marges, et comme le disait JL Godard, « c’est la marge qui tient la page ».

Max Mollon est notre premier « marabout ». Il est designer, enseignant et doctorant au programme SACRe à l'ENSAD et à Télécom ParisTech. Il questionne cette nouvelle pratique qu’est le « Design Fiction » à la frontière entre anticipation et critique sociale, entre contestation et contre-pouvoir.

Le Design Fiction ne relance-t-il pas l'innovation… droit dans le mur ? Face aux crises complexes et aux opinions polarisées des débats de nos sociétés, peut-on résister au problem-solving, mission usuelle du designer, pour questionner les enjeux en profondeur ? C'est l'intention de Max Mollon dont les objets conflictuels ouvrent une brèche : un espace de confrontation aux autres et aux visions dominantes ; un espace d'écoute et d'inter-compréhension. Pour cela, il pousse les pratiques du Design Critique, Design Spéculatif et Design Fiction hors des milieux de l'art. Mais quelle est leur place dans la société ?

The recent rapid increase in human population over the last two hundred years has raised concerns that humans are beginning to overpopulate our planet, while the available natural resources may not be able to sustain present or larger numbers of humans. However, the industrial revolution has contributed to the development of humans it led to a population shift from rural villages to urban cities and megacities. This population shift has created new problems that didn’t exist before, challenging to maintain a sustainable living. The rapid growth of cities is due to the need to build new homes and provide services for inhabitants of these cities but with much less knowledge of the downsides on the environment, which led to the increase of harmful gas emissions in the air with unprecedented amounts that are now threatening our healthy living. Therefore, the need to develop a new kind of technology that is able to produce less emissions or in fact zero-emissions production is imperative to stop climate change and it became a global challenge to all architects in the past decade, not only to provide more healthy environment to all living beings but also preserve natural resource for future generations. However, the ultimate challenge is to construct buildings that can also restore the damage caused by previous generations and other industries.
This research has a large goal to spur fundamental shifts in thinking and practice in sustainable architecture to improve human life and reduce environmental degradation. This is an ambitious aim that is difficult to achieve yet one reality is evident: Biological Technologies are the key. While the past century was dominated by the flow of information, and advances in physics, electronics and communication, this coming era is considered to be the biological and nanotechnological revolution
Biological NanoArchitecture focuses on biotechnology and nanotechnology use in architecture; mimicking a natural bio system in the building process through the use of nanotechnology, to create a distinctive trend of architecture that is in harmony with the environment and embedded in nature. This new trend of architecture will solve economic issues, provide more human comfort and restores a healthy environment not only for the building users but also for greater society.

In an age of uncertainty, those who can anticipate revolution, the outbreak of wars, or which states might default are much in demand. The marketplace of ideas about the future is huge, and includes “wonks”, scholars, and pundits who produce scenarios, predictions and ratings. The more opaque the future seems to be, the further the relationship between knowledge and power intensifies—especially the nexus between those who sell their expertise and those who consume it. This book analyzes today’s knowledge factories to reveal how our futures are shaped by social scientists, think-tanks, and rating agencies. It explains why conservative and linear predictions prevail, and why the future reflects a systematic search for stability, especially when linked to national interest. The notion of a globalized world whose main characteristic is speed—and where predictions have accelerating, self-fulfilling effects—is obsolete. Those who are supposed to know reassure those who are supposed to act. When their preferences converge, the industry of the future has a decelerating effect on world politics. These “lords of knowledge” reinforce pre-existing beliefs, create expectations about the future, while obstructing its vision when—inevitably—it diverges from its orderly path. Based on this explanation of the role of the future in global politics, this book also develops a normative analysis of what predictions and forecasts ought to be in a democratic society.

This chapter is concerned with thinking about leadership of schools in the future. In this chapter I provide a  20-year prediction about future schools and future school leadership. To get to this reconsideration there are a few steps. After a brief discussion about the slower pace of educational change, a collection of 58 papers published in 2020 about educational responses to the pandemic are reviewed to get a sense of the current change pressures on schools and how schools might change. This review is the stimulus to then make an argued case as to how educational leadership in turn might be developed; and to help with this I use a conceptual model to think about best and next practices. With all future predications there will be considerable uncertainty. However, my argument is that education will continue to change at a relatively slow pace, and therefore schools and the leadership required will similarly evolve slowly, and this evolutionary pace of changes enhances the confidence in the predictions provided.

La Cuarta Revolución Industrial promete grandes cambios sociales. Tal cual indica Klaus Schwab, esta revolución tecnológica alterará por completo los productos que elaboramos, cómo los elaboramos, cómo interactuamos y, sobre todo, quiénes somos. Como era de esperarse, aquel potencial caracterizado por la promesa de la automatización y la interconexión de los ecosistemas físicos con los digitales (Internet de las cosas, implantes neurales, prótesis inteligentes, etc.) no solo ofrecerían beneficios, sino que, consecuentemente, también supondrían peligros. La guerra también experimentará cambios. En este escenario el biohacking, las Smart Cities, los Deep Fakes y las nanotecnologías, podrían alterar por completo lo que entendemos por conflicto bélico.
