Grinding of metal matrix composites is a challengin g task on account of the hybrid nature of their constituents. In this study, the influence of grind ing process and parameters on surface finish and su rface integrity of MMC workpiece was investigated. A high performance resin bonded diamond grinding wheel was used owing to the abrasive nature of SiC reinfo rcements. As–ground workpiece was characterized by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, pro filometry and by variations in near surface microhardness values. The emphasis has also been gi v to the influence of grinding parameters on surface residual stresses. A model of the reinforce ment particles–grinding wheel interaction has been proposed. The experimental material was a powder me tallurgically produced AA–2124 based metal matrix composite reinforced with 25 volume percent of fine (2-3 μm) SiC particles in T6 heattreatment condition.

A comparison between conventional abrasives and superabrasives in grinding of SiC-aluminium composites2000 •
The subject of this paper is concerned with an experimental study on the grindability of metal matrix composites. Machining by abrasive tools of these materials has been investigated by means of experimental tests carried out with different types of grinding wheels, made with both conventional abrasives and superabrasives. It has been found that the decrease in cutting ability of the

Surface Quality Evaluation of Various Metals After Grinding with Aluminum Oxide Grinding Wheel2020 •
Different metals can respond differently when grinding using the same abrasive grinding wheel, especially in terms of surface quality. In this context, this work aims give a contribution to the metalworking industry by presenting the results of surface finishing after grinding the following metals: VP Atlas steel grade, Gray Cast Iron and two superalloys, Inconel 718 and Ti-6Al-4V. Tests were performed with the aluminum oxide grinding wheel and with following parameters: cutting speed of 37.6 m/s and workspeed of 10 m/min. Two values of depth of cut (15 μm and 30 μm) were tested. The surface roughness (Ra and Rz parameters) were analyzed and SEM images of the machined surfaces were taken and analyzed in order to identify the cutting mechanisms and provide better results discussion. The results showed that the surface roughness increased with the depth of cut; Ra values kept below 0.48 μm for all metals tested. Regarding the machined surface quality, some cracks were observed on the ...
This paper aims at analyzing multiple grinding characteristics of Al/SiC composites produced by stir casting. Desirability function-based approach is employed wherein the process parameters like wheel velocity, work piece velocity, feed rate and depth of cut were varied to obtain optimum tangential grinding force, surface roughness and grinding temperature. Experiments were conducted on a cylindrical grinding machine using Box-Behnken Design (BBD). Experiments were carried out using Al 2 O 3 grinding wheel of diameter 300 mm. Empirical models were developed for the grinding process parameters of Al/SiC composites for predicting the optimum tangential grinding force, surface roughness and grinding temperature. The results showed that high wheel velocity, medium work piece velocity, low feed rate and low depth of cut are necessary to minimize the tangential grinding force, surface roughness and grinding temperature for grinding of Al/SiC composites.

In the present study a dense alumina ceramics (>95% T.D) was studied for its surface finish characteristics. To evaluate the effect of machining parameters on the surface finish of the sintered alumina using the surface grinding machine, samples were ground using different spindle rpm, depth of cuts and x-stage movement. After each machining stage, surface roughness values of the ground specimens were measured using either non-contact type or contact type surface profilometer. The machining operation indicated that the best set of input parameters for surface grinding of sintered Al 2 O 3 ceramics is 2000 rpm spindle speed 0.3 m depth of cut and 5,000 mm/min X-stage movement.

The Investigation of Machinability and Surface Properties of Aluminium Alloy Matrix Composites2021 •
Aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) are crucial to the progress of composite application areas due to their remarkable mechanical properties. Their usage has expanded into different fields such as the aerospace, automobile, and defense industries. The present study used wrought Al alloy AA6061 as the matrix, while ilmenite (FeTiO3) particles were used as reinforcement at different weight percentages to prepare metal matrix composites. One of the most economical and simple casting routes among the several available fabrication techniques for the preparation of composites is the stir casting method, which was applied in the present investigation to prepare the AMCs. The machinability of the fabricated composites and the surface roughness property after machining were studied to understand the effect of speed and feed during machining. The results showed that an increase in speed decreased the cutting forces and the surface roughness. Meanwhile, an increase in surface roughness was obser...
