IRMA Code II: unique annotation of medical images for access and retrieval2012 •
Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) provides novel options to access large repositories of medical images, in particular for storing, querying and reporting. This requires a revisit of nomenclatures for image classification such as DICOM, SNOMED, and RadLex. For instance, DICOM defines only about 20 concept terms for body regions, which partly overlap. This is insufficient to access the visual image characteristics. In 2002, the Image Retrieval in Medical Applications (IRMA) project proposed a mono-hierarchic, multi-axial coding scheme called IRMA Code. It was used in the Cross Language Evaluation Forum (ImageCLEF) annotation tasks. Ten years of experience have discovered several weak points. In this paper, we propose eight axes of three levels in hierarchy for (A) anatomy, (B) biological system, (C) configuration, (D) direction, (E) equipment, (F) finding, (G) generation, and (H) human maneuver as well as additional flags for age class, body side, contrast agent, ethnicity, findin...

Medical image retrieval can play an important role for diagnostic and teaching purposes in medicine. Image modality is an important visual characteristic that can be used to improve retrieval performance. Many test and on- line collections do not contain information about the image modality. We have created an automatic image clas- sifier for both grey-scale and colour medical images. We

Design of a medical image database with content-based retrieval capabilities2007 •
This paper presents the architecture of an image administration system that supports the medical practice in tasks such as teaching, diagnosis and telemedicine. The proposed system has a multi-tier, web-based architecture and supports content-based retrieval. The paper discusses the design aspects of the system as well as the proposed content-based retrieval approach. The system was tested with real pathology images to evaluate its performance, reaching a precision rate of 67%. The detailed results are presented and ...

Effective classification of radiographic medical images using LS-SVM and NSCT based retrieval system2012 •
While content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been researched for more than two decades, retrieving 3D datasets has been progressing considerably more slowly, especially in respect to its application to the medical domain. This is in part due to the limitation of processing speed when trying to retrieve high-resolution datasets in real-time. Another barrier is that most existing methods have been developed based on 2D images instead of 3D, leaving a gap to be filled. At present, a significant number of exploitations are focusing on the extraction of 3D shapes. However, it appears other information tends to be equally important in clinical decision making. In this paper, Local Binary Pattern (LBP), a texture based approach stemming from 2D forms, has been studied extensively through the application to 3D images from a collection of MR brain images in a content-based image retrieval system (CBIR). The initial results show LBP not only can achieve a precision rate of up to 78% but als...
