John Skelton is a central literary figure and the leading poet during the first thirty years of Tudor rule. Nevertheless, he remains challenging and even contradictory for modern audiences.

This book aims to provide an authoritative guide to this complex poet and his works, setting him in his historical, religious, and social contexts. Beginning with an exploration of his life and career, it goes on to cover all the major aspects of his poetry, from the literary traditions in which he wrote and the form of his compositions to the manuscript contexts and later reception. Sidonius C. Sollius Apollinaris Sidonius, Die Briefe. Eingeleitet, übersetzt und erläutert von Helga Köhler, Stuttgart: Hiersemann 2014, XXXVII + 355 pp., ISBN 978-3-7772-1414-6, € 224 (hb). Die Briefe des Apollinaris Sidonius sind seit eh und je eine erstrangige Quelle für das Gallien des fünften Jahrhunderts und haben bis in den Humanismus hinein die europäische Literatur entscheidend beeinflusst. Als prototypi-sche Mischgestalt aus Aristokrat und Seelenhirt, römischem Präfekt und Bischof von Clermont, Hofpoet und liturgischem Autor ist Sidonius wesent-lich für unser Verständnis des spätantiken Christentums. Helga Köhler (K.) stellt ihn nun erstmals in einer mustergültigen Übersetzung seiner ganzen Korrespondenz dem deutschsprachigen Publikum vor. Dank ihrem wegwei-senden Kommentarband zum ersten Buch der Korrespondenz (Heidelberg 1995) ist K. eine der Urheberinnen der heutigen Sidonius-Renaissance. Das Buch enthält, neben der Übersetzung, eine Einleitung, eine Auswahl-Bibliographie und ein Namen-und Sachregister. Die Einleitung ist eine gekonnte, äußerst zugängliche Zusammenfassung unserer Kenntnis auf dem heutigen Stand der Wissenschaft. Binnen dreißig Seiten wird der Leser infor-miert über den Autor, seine Briefkunst und sein Nachleben. Zudem legt K. Rechenschaft ab über die Entscheidungen, die sie bei der Übersetzung getroffen hat. Einige, für die Übersetzung wichtige Aspekte möchte ich hier hervorheben. Die Sammlung von 147 Briefen in neun Büchern würdigt K. zu Recht als mehr als ein historisches Dokument, nämlich als ein sorgfältig angeleg-tes Gesamtkunstwerk aus Prosa und poetischen Einlagen, das Politik und Privatleben, Weltliches und Geistiges verbindet zu einem Kaleidoskop wech-selnder Stimmungen. Form und Sprache der Briefe stehen dabei stets gleich-rangig neben ihrem Informationsgehalt. Dem Stil des Sidonius gerecht zu werden war Hauptaufgabe dieser Über-setzung. Die sehr langen Perioden, die alle denkbaren Stil-und Gedankenfi-guren häufen, überforderten schon nachweisbar manche Zeitgenossen. K. hat sich für die weitestmögliche Nachbildung des Originals entschlossen, da die deutsche Syntax ja die Möglichkeit zu Schachtelsätzen bietet. Das Ergebnis ist eine vornehme, zuweilen leicht altertümliche, aber immer kristallklare Über-setzung. Die erfindungsreiche Wortwahl und der präzise Aufbau steuern den langen Atem, den der Leser braucht. Die Übersetzung wäre besonders dazu geeignet, vorgetragen zu werden. Bemerkenswert sind die poetischen Einla-gen, die K. virtuos gemäß der ursprünglichen Metren übersetzt.

Facing charges of witchery, Apuleius defends himself by mentioning the name of the African village where one of his accusers, Sicinius Aemilianus, lives. The article begins with a summary of what should be known about the word (spelling, etymology, grammatical status) as well as the place it refers to.  It goes on to show how the utterance of the name is, in fact, used as a counterattack that aims to invalidate the charge of barbarism that faces the accused. The word, which is generally analyzed as a stroke of irony, covers though a complex game on the pronunciation of the accuser whose Punic accent is presented derisively, rather,  as a claim to the mastery of Attic Greek.This subtle game involves  making reference to authors brought back into fashion in the second century (Plautus, Catullus). In the end,  the paper  attempts to put into perspective this game on the  pronunciation of Sicinius Aemilianus in a reflection on the cultural identity of the sophist, who clearly rejects the Punic,  fetishizes Latin and carefully conceals his vernacular native language, the Libyan.

Das Noviziat markiert ein klassisches Feld monastischen Lebens und monastischer Geschichte. Es ist die zentrale Sozialisationsinstanz einer jeden religiösen Gemeinschaft, die den neu Eintretenden in den Status des Religiosen und die damit verbundenen Kompetenzen und Anforderungen `einlernt'. Um dieses Lernen zu ermöglichen, griff man seit dem 12. Jahrhundert verstärkt auf didaktischparänetische Literatur zurück. Einen Text aus diesem Bereich - De novitiis instruendis - hat die vorliegende Studie zum Gegenstand, und sie verfolgt dabei zwei Ziele: Zum einen wird der Text in einer vollständigen Edition zugänglich gemacht. Zum anderen soll anhand einer Analyse seiner Entstehungs- und Überlieferungsgeschichte versucht werden, Leitlinien für eine möglichst präzise und perspektivenreiche Deutung dieses und ähnlicher Texte zu entwerfen.

This paper wants to demonstrate the not casual similarity between Plautus'Asinar-ia 205 and Terence's Andria 545 arguing for the possibility that Plautus'Asinaria 205 was interpolated. Diàbolo desidererebbe trascorrere un'altra notte d'amore con Filenio, figlia di Cleereta, la lena. Pur-troppo non ha abbastanza soldi per appagare il suo desiderio e dunque viene lasciato alla porta. La sua rabbia trova sfogo verbale, prima in un monologo e poi in dialogo con la stessa Cleereta: il tono lamentoso ed enfatico di Diàbolo è facilmente sopraffatto dalla logica utilitaristica della lenona. Ai vv. 204-207 Diàbolo le rimprovera incoerenza verbale: ora che lui non ha più un soldo, lei parla in modo ben diverso da allora quando le dava il denaro, diverso da allora quando cercava di raggirarlo con dolci e benevole parole. Di seguito si dà il testo di Leo 1895: aliam nunc mi orationem despoliato praedicas, longe aliam inquam praebes nunc atque olim quom dabam, 205 aliam atque olim quom illiciebas me ad te blande ac benedice. tum … Si tratta di una sezione di settenari trocaici; il v. 205 presenta qualche difficoltà di ordine metrico: se si accetta così come tràdito, bisogna ammettere due iati, certamente non frequenti in tr 7 (longe | aliam | inquam). Hurka (2010, 122) li giustifica su base contestuale, al fine cioè di isolare e dunque enfatizzare aliam. In alternativa, se non si ammette iato, il verso manca di un piede e si rende ne-cessario emendare: <linguam> praebes Vahlen (1882, 277), inquam <orationem> nunc Leo (1895, in app.), inquam <iniqua> praebes Danese (2004). Alcuni editori, invece, seguono Fleckeisen (1859) nell'espunzione del verso: questa drastica decisione, seguita per esempio da Ussing, Goe-tz/Loewe e Bertini, è giustificata anche sulla base della generale fattura del verso, una sorta di doppione esplicativo di 204. In effetti il v. 205 sembra non essere altro che un'aggiunta mal riuscita per rendere più esplicita l'opposizione fra presente e passato: se infatti si leggono i versi senza 205, mancherebbe, per così dire, un termine di opposizione: ora Cleereta si comporta male perché Diàbolo è ormai senza quat-trini (despoliatus), un tempo si comportava in ben altro modo … ma il perché, ovvero che Diàbolo un tempo era in grado di pagare, mancherebbe. Questa 'lacuna' si giustifica, però, nell'ottica argo-mentativa di Diàbolo, il cui scopo è di mettere in enfasi solo la prima delle due opposizioni, mentre costituisce nell'ottica di un generico copista/rieditore un ottimo stimolo di interpolazione. Che posto occupavano gli animali nell’antichità? Come noi oggi, anche i Greci e i Romani avevano a che fare con cani, cavalli, galline; avevano allevamenti, vivari, acquari, e adottavano pratiche zootecniche. Amavano i loro animali da affezione, mentre ne uccidevano altri e li mangiavano (magari dopo averli sacrificati in onore di una divinità). Conoscevano e usavano animali selvatici o feroci, o esotici come elefanti e pappagalli. Non mancavano, nel loro immaginario, creature aliene che si credeva popolassero paesi lontani, come l’India e l’Etiopia, patrie dei manticora, dei cinocefali e dei grifoni. Quello che per noi sono i dinosauri per loro erano i ciclopi, i pegasi, le chimere, gli uomini-toro. Un affresco suggestivo che restituisce per intero l’esotismo di un mondo scomparso.

Nella cultura italiana, ai più diversi livelli, ampio è l’uso di
espressioni proverbiali latine: notevole è ad es. il loro impiego da
parte di Manzoni nei Promessi Sposi, anche a indicare la separazione
fra le classi sociali, e in tutta la letteratura dell’Ottocento esse sono
particolarmente frequenti. Nel Novecento si nota la volontà da
parte di molti autori di ridare forza a frasi ormai divenute troppo
comuni e che hanno perduto l’efficacia originaria; esse si ritrovano
soprattutto in autori dotti come Umberto Eco, ma – in particolare
negli anni ’50, ’60 anche in espressioni artistiche popolari, come i
film della Commedia all’Italiana. Un capitolo a parte costituisce
infine l’utilizzo da parte della classe politica, più o meno dotta.

This article will examine the occurrence of the " Vanity Theme " in Mesopotamian wisdom literature and elsewhere. However, the main interest of this investigation lies in the list of rulers or illustrious men of old which is manifest in a variety of wisdom " Vanity Theme " compositions. We will argue that it will not suffice to speak about the " Vanity Theme " in various literatures of the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean. We should try to identify a particular literary expression that is associated with this type of composition. We contend that this expression is the list or naming of " Early Rulers " that comes to serve as an exemplum to the basic assertion of the " Vanity Theme. "

Dans ce livre, qui se présente comme un abécédaire humoristique, Estelle Debouy a imaginé des définitions de termes de tous les jours à partir de réflexions des poètes latins sur leur temps et sur leurs contemporains : si certaines font sourire, d’autres sembleront d’une étonnante actualité...

C’est donc aux poètes latins que l’auteur laisse la parole : ainsi, plutôt que de réviser des règles de grammaire, elle propose au lecteur qui a le désir de perfectionner son latin, de se replonger dans la lecture des auteurs de l’Antiquité latine. Afin de faciliter l’approche de la langue, elle a pris le parti, dans cet ouvrage, de proposer à la lecture un choix de courts extraits de poèmes latins en contexte.

Mêlant ainsi l’utile à l’agréable, comme dirait Horace, le lecteur, en traduisant ces quelques vers, pourra de façon plaisante réviser son latin : grâce aux remarques sur l’étymologie qui rendent perceptible la forte présence du latin dans notre langue, grâce aux notes de grammaire qui explicitent chaque extrait, et grâce à la traduction proposée en regard, il pourra facilement redécouvrir ces auteurs latins qui sont bien souvent à la source de notre littérature.

Le lecteur trouvera aussi, à la fin du volume, un index grammatical qui lui permettra, s’il le souhaite, de réviser telle ou telle notion de grammaire en relisant tous les extraits qui l’illustrent.
