The seven branched lampstand within a church was thus a symbol of Christ and his Church. In theological terms, it had nothing to do with Jews – except to supersede them. This is a very important point in dealing with the Petersberg Lampstand, and all Christian lampstands.
— The biblical lampstand in Christian contexts was not a Jewish »menorah« as some today would call it, but the lampstand of Christ Jesus. It is a mistake, then, to refer to the Christian lampstand as
a menorah, as I myself did in The Menorah: From the Bible to Modern Israel. This use of Jewish terminology, drawn from the Hebrew Scriptures for Christian lampstands, wipes away what is distinctly Christian in these lamps and what is distinctly Jewish about the menorah. While such elision may be comforting in our own world,
it takes away from the history of both communities, asserting
false closeness between the majority and the minority in medieval (and modern) Europe. When adopted by contemporary Christians
– Evangelicals and sometimes Catholics and mainline Protestants –
it is for their own theological and cultural purposes in their own search for a »usable history«.19 In Germany it is all the more complex, a facet of the regrettably not-yet-complete postwar rapprochement between Christians and Jews. My sense is that the next steps require us to reassert and celebrate the distinctive in each community, even as we continue to seek out all that Jews and Christians share(d).

In the first half of the fourteenth century, the most prestigious place of learning for Hungarian clergymen was Bologna. Clerics studying there not only became prominent ecclesiastical figures, but also fulfilled important roles in the chancery and diplomacy of the Hungarian Angevin kings. While in Bologna or after their
return to Hungary, many of these men of letters commissioned illuminated manuscripts from Bolognese workshops, and thus played a decisive role in the reception of the new sensibilities of Italian art in Hungary. The first of these patrons that can be clearly identified is Demeter Nekcsei, magister tavarnicorum of the Hungarian court. Work on Nekcsei’s two-volume Bible was most likely completed by 1338, the year of his death. The paper analyses this manuscript.

Il libro presenta un’indagine sistematica sui tesori appartenenti agli edifici religiosi della città di Randazzo, in provincia di Catania e nasce dall’esigenza di dare un contributo allo studio della sacra suppellettile in materiale prezioso con particolare riguardo alle tre maggiori chiese. Partendo dal profilo storico del centro etneo, protagonista nei secoli XIV e XV delle vicende siciliane grazie al ruolo di sede estiva della corte regia, vengono descritte le tappe salienti che portarono alla realizzazione delle oreficerie. Lo studio individua caratteri internazionali per le suppellettili medievali, svelando provenienze francesi, toscane, veneziane e nord italiane. Nel periodo che va dal XVI al XIX secolo, la concentrazione di materiale che giunge dai due maggiori centri di produzione siciliana quali Messina e Palermo, unitamente alla presenza degli argentieri di Acireale e Catania, permette di acquisire un valido campionario di marchiature. La seconda parte è dedicata all’illustrazione ed alla descrizione dei singoli oggetti, con lo specifico compito di rilevare la particolare cifra stilistica voluta dalla committenza delle diverse “collezioni” che, nel loro insieme, costituisce una delle più cospicue raccolte di oreficeria sacra all’interno del panorama isolano.
Conclude l’indagine un’appendice documentaria in cui sono trascritti i primi risultati della ricerca avviata presso vari fondi archivistici, riservando grande spazio ad inventari ed atti inediti relativi al tesoro di Santa Maria. In questo modo è possibile percepire la ricchezza delle risorse godute in passato da questa chiesa grazie alla donazione De Quatris, la cui Opera commissiona nel 1561 l’interessante custodia eucaristica all’argentiere palermitano Antonio Cochula.

Il Concilio di Trento (1545-1563) determinò nuove esigenze liturgiche, che portarono a una rapida trasformazione e a un drastico rinnovamento delle chiese sia dal punto di vista strutturale che dell’arredo. Questo articolo desidera indagare i caratteri fondamentali di un fenomeno poco conosciuto e sicuramente sottovalutato della storia dell’arte moderna legata a questi cambiamenti: la ri-funzionalizzazione delle immagini medievali e bizantine, prendendo come esempio il caso toscano. In particolare verrà evidenziato come la percezione da parte dei fedeli di queste immagini si evolva nel corso dei secoli.

This study investigates the place of San Salvatore in the holy topography of Venetian Candia. By focusing on the largest convent in the Augustinian Province of the Holy Land, it contributes to a better understanding of a neglected subject in mendicant scholarship, namely the Augustinian friars’ expansion in the eastern Mediterranean. This article offers a detailed reconstruction of the demolished building and its sacred space, and sheds new light on interaction among the mixed Latin-Greek population in Venetian Crete by examining icons, altars, liturgy and, in particular, the introduction of the cult of Nicholas of Tolentino.

The symposium “The found Christ” took place in Cervignano del Friuli (Udine) on Saturday, December 3, 2005, within the homonymous multi-year project (coord. scient. S. Blason Scarel and P. Casadio) dedicated to the rediscovery of the "Christ of the Countess", a colossal medieval wooden crucifix preserved in the chapel of St. Cross, the gentilitial oratory of the villa Bresciani in Cervignano. The Conference Proceedings are published two years later, enriched by further updates: in the volume the author outlines – for the first time – the history of the residence founded by the noble Bresciani family in Cervignano (the precious 'background' of the ancient sculpture) and he describes the different buildings, the dependencies and the furnishings including his famous 'guest', suggesting again the proposal that he already put forth at the symposium: that it is to be identified with the "Christ of St. Felix", a gigantic wooden crucifix seen in 1570 by the apostolic visitor Bartolomeo of Porcia & Brugnera inside the Basilica of Sts. Felix e Fortunate in Aquileia, at that time still raised although no more flourishing

Sabato 3 dicembre 2005 a Cervignano si svolse il convegno “Il Cristo ritrovato”, nell’ambito dell’omonimo progetto pluriennale (coordinamento scientifico: S. Blason Scarel - P. Casadio) dedicato alla riscoperta del “Cristo della Contessa”, il colossale crocifisso ligneo medievale conservato nella cappella di S. Croce, l’oratorio gentilizio della villa Bresciani a Cervignano. Questo volume ha un' importanza rilevante sia in sé sia nell' ambito del progetto generale del Fondo Edifici di Culto sulle chiese di proprietà sparse in tutta l' Italia.
Ecco una ennesima occasione prestigiosa per ribadire nel modo più semplice quel principio sempre ricordato da ogni amministratore e ogni studioso della materia ma non sempre chiarissimo alla conoscenza di ognuno di noi: l' immensità e la pregnanza del patrimonio artistico della Nazione.
Siamo tutti convinti di come tale patrimonio sia un esempio preclaro di quel concetto del bene comune che tanto giovamento ha arrecato e arreca ai progressi del vivere civile, della giurisprudenza, della gestione economico-finanziaria e della vita quotidiana. Ma quando andiamo a verificare la concreta proprietà di tale patrimonio pubblico restiamo sempre incerti sulle competenze specifiche e sulle responsabilità.
A chi appartengono le chiese? Mi è capitato spesso di rispondere a un tale quesito, sovente posto da persone di cultura e di esperienza, e ho ripetutamente notato lo stupore di chi viene correttamente informato.
È ancora vigente, infatti, nella mente di molti il luogo comune per cui le chiese apparterrebbero sostanzialmente al Vaticano, cioè alla Chiesa, e per i più esperti perlomeno dovrebbero essere proprietà dei Vicariati, che nessuno sa bene cosa siano ma se ne sente molto parlare o delle Diocesi. Non è così, ancorché non manchino certamente le proprietà facenti capo alle diverse Diocesi, ma la confusione in questo campo regna sovrana e ancora oggi molti stentano a credere che la maggior parte delle chiese monumentali di questo Paese o sono proprietà dello Stato o sono comunque sottoposte alla tutela imprescindibile delle amministrazioni pubbliche.
Sembra incredibile ma per molti nostri concittadini le guerre di indipendenza, le vicende della individuazione della capitale dell' Italia unita, la Breccia di Porta Pia, il concetto stesso di Demanio, sono cose sconosciute e incomprensibili.
Cosa sia veramente successo quando l' Italia è stata unificata, quando la dinastia Savoia ha assunto il potere regale sul nostro Paese, come è stata organizzata la tutela del patrimonio artistico nazionale, sono fatti altamente ignorati ancora oggi. Ora in questo volume la verifica della consistenza e della rilevanza del patrimonio artistico di proprietà del F.E.C. assume un significato ancora maggiore. Anche in ambito culturale, infatti, esiste una sorta di questione meridionale che fa sempre pensare a differenze abissali e incolmabili tra Nord e Sud. Ebbene studiando il volume ci si accorge che la consistenza patrimoniale del F.E.C. nel meridione d' Italia è formidabile e esaltante e si conferma allora un punto che è bene mettere in luce quando si parla del patrimonio artistico e architettonico del F.E.C.. E tale punto è l' eccellenza di tale patrimonio nell' ambito di un gigantesco patrimonio nazionale in cui le leggi vigenti e la cultura più radicata non consentono scelte qualitative, estendendosi sempre più, e giustamente, il criterio della tutela sul bene culturale in sé a prescindere dalla rilevanza, persino dalla bellezza (dato inevitabilmente ad alto tasso di soggettività), dall' influsso generato nel corso della storia.
Si nota, allora, come le chiese di proprietà del F.E.C. costituiscano sovente degli apici assoluti, delle elette emergenze nella moltitudine del nostro patrimonio artistico, costituendo tutte insieme e in tutti i luoghi d' Italia una sorta di tesoro incomparabile e prezioso nell' ambito di un insieme che di fatto rappresenta un aspetto fondamentale della ricchezza del nostro Paese.
Il presente volume, in tal senso, è molto istruttivo.
Comprende infatti tutta l' area meridionale escludendo Sicilia e Sardegna che saranno oggetto di un volume apposito, ma comprende anche l' area laziale al di fuori di Roma, che è stata argomento di un volume precedente

In 1899, part of the floor of the church of San Tommaso collapsed, revealing a Medieval mosaic pavement. Arthur K. Porter believed that it was the only surviving part of the ancient Benedictine abbey, but he also asserted that it was «the daintiest and most charming» Romanesque mosaic he ever saw.
In my paper, I will first clarify the process of rediscovery of the mosaic through archival documents, as well as the conservative actions managed by the Ufficio Regionale ai Monumenti and the Ministero delle Belle Arti. The mosaic was left in loco and closed with removable wooden boards that allowed its preservation till today.
After considering the geometrical elements of its composition, its ornamental motives and its figured subjects, I will provide a graphic reconstruction of the mosaic which is also part of a 3D rendering of the church, and clearly presents the surviving mosaic fragments in relation to the architectonical structures.
My analysis will focus on the figures and their semantic value investigating their iconographic details and their connection to the written culture i.e. Christian literature, classical texts, or astronomic and naturalistic treatises. Such a study will allow to recognize the negative connotations of «ydra», «[cer]berus», «Sinon» and the ass located in the northern nave’s section of the mosaic. The semantic and figurative connections of these figures with “evil” and “hell” are confirmed by the dark ‘setting’ and the proximity to the left/Damned side of the Last Judgment painted on the counter façade. Furthermore, I would argue that the presence of these negative figures must be associated to St. Jerome’s writing. Such association is crucial, because references to St. Jerome, to his life, his culture, and his writings, often occur in San Tommaso.
The southern nave mosaic differs in colours and figures: it is mostly white, instead of black, and is figured with zoomorphic and vegetal elements. The general semantic value is rather positive, and is probably influenced by Abraham’s bosom painted on the right/Saved side of the Last Judgment.
In the main nave only a few fragments are preserved, but the presence of Birds drinking from the chalice hint to a clearly Eucharistic meaning. Probably this section of the mosaic decorated the area surrounding a nave altar.
I will then compare San Tommaso’s mosaic with other Italian pavements, especially those from Cremona and the Po valley, but also with other figurative sources, such as illuminated manuscripts, are given. For example, I will consider the «cerberus» in relation to the only surviving manuscript from the library of San Tommaso (now Canon. Pat. Lat. 148, Oxford, Bodleian Library) and to the rare spread-eagled figure included in Ms. 99 from Montecassino.
I will discuss how figurative themes were connected to each other or were given a different connotation depending on their location, i.e. in the case of the ass, whose value is negative when next to ‘infernal’ figures in the pavement, but positive on the wall paintings as ‘obedient’ animal.
I will relate figures to architectural spaces, e.g. the altar in the Sanctuary as most sacred pole in the building, and to the main directional axes East/West, North/South, high/low, according to their symbolic meaning in Christian literature.
Finally I will argue that the mosaic figures contribute to the ‘hierarchy’ of the spaces in the church, creating a complex image-system where meanings of the figural elements are valid before their fruition, either by laics or, most likely, by monks who could read images also like warning visions of the Afterlife.

From the mid sixteenth to the mid seventeenth centuries small wooden plates, or trenchers, were used to serve special sweetmeats and sugared fruits to guests at the ‘banquet’ course held at the conclusion of meals in prosperous English households.  Painted and gilded with flowers, images and written texts that were often biblical or moralising but sometimes bawdy, the trenchers were intended to provoke discussion amongst the diners, encourage conviviality and provide prompts for story-telling.  The paper argues that understanding these decorative objects can help towards a reconstruction of the ephemeral spectacle of the banquet as theatre within elite dining cultures of the time.

The illustrations of the Benedictine monk, artist, and chronicler Matthew Paris offer a gateway into the thirteenth-century world. This new study of his cartography emphasizes the striking innovations he brought to it, and shows how the maps became an investment and repository of certain medieval spatial practices: travel through the world, the occurrence of history in that world, and the religious practices and devotional attitudes that were assiduously cultivated within the larger visual culture of St. Albans abbey [in great measure produced by Matthew's own images]. Travel [i.e. space], history [time], and devotion [liturgy], then, are the primary issues and meanings deposited in and registered by Matthew Paris's cartographic landscape. In searching out these contexts, the book explores the paradigm of imagined pilgrimage as an organizing principle that pushes into greater relief medieval understandings of their arrangements of places and of histories. Thus traveling through geography could enact its meanings in a dynamic, religious, even devotional performance of the maps' materials. Richly illustrated with black and white and colour plates.

Sword and Buckler in Hebrew Letters: Traces of Early Illuminated German Fight Books in Jewish Manuscripts

Two manuscripts produced in early fourteenth-century German lands reflect similar iconography of fighting with Sword and Buckler (small round shield); one is the well-known fencing manual, Leeds, Royal Armouries, MS I. 33, produced ca. 1320, and the other is a Hebrew manuscript of the Bible, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France héb. 9, made in 1304, that will be the focus of this paper. I wish to demonstrate that the iconography of the masorah figurata was adapted from German Fechtbücher (fencing manuals), which are books of instructions, usually with illustrations, detailing the fencing arts. First, I relate to the realia of Jews bearing arms and Jewish fencing masters. Afterward I discuss the iconography of the fighting figures; subsequently, after examining the texts that make up the micrography, I reach a broader conclusion regarding the reason the patron commissioned this work and the meaning of the scene. This lecture intends to demonstrate how Hebrew illuminated manuscripts can shed more light on the study of fight books iconography.

The Shape of Sex is a pathbreaking history of nonbinary sex, focusing on ideas and individuals who allegedly combined or crossed sex or gender categories from 200–1400 C.E. Ranging widely across premodern European thought and culture, Leah DeVun reveals how and why efforts to define “the human” so often hinged on ideas about nonbinary sex.

The Shape of Sex examines a host of thinkers—theologians, cartographers, natural philosophers, lawyers, poets, surgeons, and alchemists—who used ideas about nonbinary sex as conceptual tools to order their political, cultural, and natural worlds. DeVun reconstructs the cultural landscape navigated by individuals whose sex or gender did not fit the binary alongside debates about animality, sexuality, race, religion, and human nature. The Shape of Sex charts an embrace of nonbinary sex in early Christianity, its brutal erasure at the turn of the thirteenth century, and a new enthusiasm for nonbinary transformations at the dawn of the Renaissance. Along the way, DeVun explores beliefs that Adam and Jesus were nonbinary-sexed; images of “monstrous races” in encyclopedias, maps, and illuminated manuscripts; justifications for violence against purportedly nonbinary outsiders such as Jews and Muslims; and the surgical “correction” of bodies that seemed to flout binary divisions.

In a moment when questions about sex, gender, and identity have become incredibly urgent, The Shape of Sex casts new light on a complex and often contradictory past. It shows how premodern thinkers created a system of sex and embodiment that both anticipates and challenges modern beliefs about what it means to be male, female—and human.

La Bibbia ha un naso di cera che può essere plasmato a proprio piacimento, scrive Alano di Lilla. Paradigma di identità politica e religiosa, dalla seconda metà del secolo XI, la Bibbia si rinnova attraverso il formato del libro, la tipologia grafica, il testo e il corredo iconografico, in quanto fondamento ecclesiologico da cui muove la Riforma della Chiesa. Dipinta sulle pareti ecclesiali e miniata nei manoscritti atlantici, la Bibbia è ostesa in figura e scrittura. Chi ne ha concepito il rinnovamento figurativo? Che ruolo può aver interpretato la basilica lateranense, cattedrale di Roma, nella diffusione iconografica della 'Bibbia romana'? Quali sono stati i modelli di riferimento? Officine di miniatori e officine di pittori concorrono, negli scriptoria e sui ponteggi, a elaborare il programma iconografico delle Scritture: una visione complessiva di queste narrazioni permette, da una parte, di ricostruire il cantiere ideologico, editoriale e figurativo, della Bibbia promosso dalla Chiesa romana; dall'altra di analizzare i rapporti che intercorrono tra bibbie miniate e bibbie dipinte, da un punto di vista iconografico, formale e di tecnica esecutiva. Il doppio binario materico (pergamenaceo e parietale) e semantico (iconografico e testuale) in cui la Bibbia è esposta rivela, in molti casi, affinità di cultura grafica e figurativa tanto significative da innescare interrogativi che riguardano l'organizzazione dell'officina di miniatori e del cantiere d'arte monumentale e la possibilità di interferenze operative tra équipes di artisti differentemente specializzate.

This approach to the imagery of the Southern and Eastern façades of Leon cathedral restores their original topography, their several liturgical functions, their intended audiences and the particular cultural and historical circumstances that surrounded their carving, and confronting them with the Portal of the Coronería and Sarmental of Burgos cathedral. In the portal of Saint Froilán is seen a celebration of this local saint’s main liturgical Feasts; the choice of an Apocalyptic program for the south central portal is justified by a Castilian tradition of decorating the cathedral entrance near the bishop’s palace with ecclesiological discourses; and Bishop Martín Fernández’s great expectations can be shown in the commemoration of the bethrothat of the Castilian heir Fernando de la Cerda and the French Princess doña Blanca in the south western portal’s sculpted decoration. As for the Western entrance, the baptismal imagery displayed in the northern access is related to the parish function of the chapel in the ground floor of the northern tower; and the scatological discourses in the Last Judgement and the Coronation of the Virgin portals adequate to the medieval use of the parvis as  a cemetery, and they are discussed in the frame of mid-thirteenth century theological controversies on the resurrection of the body that help to recognize a Franciscan bias not only in León but also in the “diplomatic” portal of La Coronería in Burgos. Finally, the different stylistic trends that converge in León are examined as sculpted counterparts of vernacular pastoral rhetorical devices: the more “narrative styles” of the portal of San Froilán and Saint John as opposed to the “expressionistic naturalism” of the last Judgement and Apocalyptic portals.

This note describes a lipsanotheca (a small container of relics, placed within an altar) from the church of Santa Maria de Cap d’Aran. The container, now preserved in the Museu dera Val d’Aran, is of blown glass, and it has relief-cut ornament. The form, color, and quality of the glass indicate that it was made in the ninth or 10th century, probably in Iran. Similar objects in The Corning Museum of Glass and The Metropolitan Museum of Art are noted. It is not known how the bottle reached Spain. The authors believe that it was used as a lipsanotheca at about the time the church of Santa Maria de Cap d’Aran was consecrated, in the first half of the 11th century.

Attributed to Master Heinrich of Constance, a sculpture of the Visitation from the convent of St. Katharinenthal in the Lower Rhine Valley (ca. 1310­20) portrays Mary and her cousin Elizabeth with two quartz cabochons inserted into their torsos, rock crystal representations of their wombs, which nurture the fetal Christ and John the Baptist. These crystals make the ​Visitation a strikingly unique devotional object in the eyes of the modern viewer, but when considered in the context of the fourteenth­century German Dominican convent, they also provide insight into the devotional practices of their users, cloistered nuns. In this thesis, I explore the nature and function of this unique object of devotion in the context of the Katharinenthal convent specifically in addition to the wider Middle High German spiritual milieu, particularly Rhenish Mysticism. ​I take a multidisciplinary approach to the study of this medieval artwork by making use of a wide range of sources: works from this same period found at Katharinenthal and other convents around the Rhine valley, theological treatises concerning the Incarnation (and, therefore, the Marian womb) the visionary accounts of Henry Suso and other Rhineland mystics, and the work of such medieval art historians as Jeffrey Hamburger, Caroline Walker Bynum, and Jacqueline Jung. Jung in particular describes the bodies of Mary and Elizabeth in the ​Visitation as “exuberant,” “thrusting the evidence of [their] virtues outward toward beholders and rendering them visible through the body’s materiality rather than through any internal motifs.” (“Crystalline Wombs and Pregnant Hearts,” p. 234). In this thesis, I use Jung’s analysis of the sculpture as a starting point to propose a new, though not mutually exclusive, model for interpreting the function of these crystal wombs.
In the first main section of the thesis, I examine the convent of Katharinenthal itself, a highly enclosed and communal female monastic environment, together with many of the surviving devotional objects from the convent around 1300 that formed Katharinenthal’s visual and material culture. The following section examines in closer detail the crystal wombs of the Visitation, considering both their theological connotations and their significance to medieval perception of the female body. The final section addresses the devotional function of Mary and Elizabeth’s crystal wombs by placing the ​Visitation within the context of both late medieval Euc​haristic theology and Rhenish mysticism. I conclude that the ​Visitation’s crystal wombs functioned as meditational foci, serving as “windows” into the visionary experience. These wombs, with their emphasis on transparency and interiority in their enclosed, conventual context, ultimately serve as a catalyst for mystical union with the divine.
