espanolEl presente trabajo esta dedicado al analisis de las tecnicas para el vidriado de la ceramica que aparecen documentadas en diversos tratados y recetarios de epoca medieval. Se trata de textos procedentes, en su mayor parte, de la Peninsula Italiana, que incluyen recetas dedicadas al vidriado de la ceramica al plomo y al estano, con particular referencia a la realizacion de la loza dorada. El estudio comenta los textos donde dichas recetas se insertan, las tecnicas de trabajo que mencionan y concluye con un apendice documental en el que se incluye la traduccion al castellano de las recetas estudiadas. EnglishThis work is dedicated to the analysis of techniques for glazing ceramics that are documented in some treatises and recipe books of medieval times. These are texts from, for the most part, the Italian Peninsula, including recipes dedicated to the glazed ceramic with lead and tin, with particular reference to the making of the so-called, golden ceramic. The study discusses the texts in which these recipes are inserted, the techniques of work mentioned and it concludes with an appendix which includes the translation into Castilian language of the prescriptions studied.

The authors publish the findings of the digs on Mellya-Tamak VI temporary settlement belonging to the Chiyalik archaeological culture – one of the most comprehensively studied settlements in this complex of sites. Besides proper Chiyalik materials, some artefacts of Mesolithic-Neolithic, Early Iron Age (Pyany Bor culture) and Early Middle Ages (Kushnarenkovo culture) have been identified here. The Chiyalik stage is represented by debris of a summer camp, with its surface structures, hearths, stones from wall cladding and household pits. The life time of the Chiyalik settlement on the Mellya-Tamak dune can be dated within the thirteenth-fourteenth centuries, as suggested by the authors based on some finds of glass beads with overlaid linear-undulate paste threads and the ceramic complex. As a result of years of research, the authors conclude that the Chiyalik sites were left by the Uralic Ugrians, who were part of the Golden Horde population and were undergoing the process of Islamization and Turkization.

Публикуются результаты раскопок Меллятамакского VI селища чияликской археологической культуры, одного из наиболее полно исследованных поселений этого круга памятников. Кроме собственно чияликских материалов, здесь выявлены артефакты эпохи мезолита-неолита, раннего железного века (пьяноборская культура) и раннего средневековья (кушнаренковская культура). Чияликский этап представлен остатками поселения-летника, к которому относятся наземные сооружения, очаги, камни обкладки стен и хозяйственные ямы. Время существования чияликского поселения на Мелля-Тамакской дюне по находкам стеклянных бус с орнаментом в виде накладных линейно-волнистых пастовых нитей и керамическому комплексу определено авторами в рамках XIII–XIV вв. По результатам многолетних исследований можно заключить, что памятники чияликской культуры оставлены уральскими уграми, входящими в состав населения Золотой Орды и находящимися в этот период в процессе исламизации и тюркизации.

La presenza di importazioni dalla Grecia continentale a Messina, iniziata subito dopo la conquista normanna, era già nota dai materiali editi dello scavo del Municipio. Un recente  studio su un contesto inedito di scavo, condotto nel 1997 in via Oratorio della Pace (Liceo La Farina), ha evidenziato la presenza di un certo numero di ceramiche, graffite e/o dipinte, di fabbrica bizantina. Si presentano i risultati preliminari di tale studio, che evidenzia un'interessante varietà tipologica con riferimento alle vecchie e nuove classificazioni di questa particolare produzione di ceramica da mensa, offrendo alla ricerca ulteriori spunti per definire un primo quadro delle importazioni dall'Oriente nella città dello Stretto tra XII e XIII secolo.

Some Byzantine ceramics from a 12th-13th  context in Messina.
The evidence in Messina of imported Ware from continental Greece, whose first appearance dates back to the Norman conquest, was long known by edited materials from the excavations carried out in the City Hall courtyard.
A new study of materials recovered from unpublished excavations in 1997 in Via Oratorio della Pace (Liceo La Farina) points out the presence of several Byzantine ceramics (Sgraffito Ware, Painted  Sgraffito Ware, Incised Sgraffito Ware).
In this preliminary work it's worth noting an interesting variety of types (with reference to old and new classifications of this peculiar fine tableware) which offers the research further elements in order to define a preliminary summary of trade good from East to Messina in the 12th and the 13th centuries.

The paper focuses on the analysis of relief images of three-part rosette on bottom of gray-clay vessels from medieval Vladimir. A systematization of these materials is executed on the basis of statistics analysis and with methods of traceology. A three-part rosette can be interpreted as a mark of pottery production at a large medieval farm.  // Публикация посвящена анализу рельефных изображений трехчастной розетки на донцах сероглиняных сосудов средневекового Владимира. Систематизация этих материалов осуществляется на основе статистического анализа и методов трасологии. Трехчастная розетка может быть интерпретирована как знак принадлежности гончарного производства крупному феодальному хозяйству.

Bereits 1966 konnte eine Kleinplastik aus dem Areal der Töpfereiwüstung Bengerode geborgen werden, die u. U. in die Gruppe der Kleinplastiken mit sakraler Motivik einzuordnen ist. Bei dem unglasierten Exemplar handelt es sich offensichtlich um
einen Fehlbrand.

In 1966, a small sculpture was recovered from the area of the deserted potter's shop in Bengerode. The sculpture is classißed as possibly belonging to the category of sacral art. The pottery is unglazed and therefore obviously a failure.

In March 2016 Big Heritage C.I.C. and community volunteers undertook four evaluation trenches within the interior of the site known as Bromborough Courthouse Moated Site and Fishponds, Wirral (centred on NGR: SJ 34496 84189). These trenches were sited in an area previously archaeologically unexplored by Big Heritage or previous schemes of investigation. The site is a scheduled monument (SMR 13428). Permission was granted by the land owners, the Land Trust, and Historic England to undertake excavation. Dr Joanne Kirton, on behalf of Big Heritage C.I.C., was granted Scheduled Monument Consent (Ref:
S00131391). The excavation was monitored by Andrew Davison of Historic England. 

1.2. This work was undertaken in partnership with the Land Trust to assess the potential for survival of archaeological remains in areas of the site not previously investigated and to determine the nature and date of any features or finds recovered. This information will be used to inform future management strategies for the site and potential archaeological research projects.

Using well stratified ceramic assemblages from eight settlements across South Glamorgan this thesis places archaeology at the centre of interpretations of medieval and early post-medieval economic networks in this area. Comparative analysis and the contextualisation of the material have enabled archaeological evidence to develop new ways of understanding and interpreting the region during the 12th to the 17th centuries.

Spanish tin-glazed wares both with lustre painting and only with blue and white decoration were permanently delivered to Sudak from about the middle of the 14th century. The main quantity of the finds there belongs to the Valencia wares of a classical style (Matura Valencia ware) dated back to the 15th centuries. In this period tin-glazed wares from the workshops of the Valencia region were dominant in the international markets in general.
Obviously, the inhabitants of Sudak were among the regular consumers of the Iberian tableware, which brought by Genoese traders. According to archaeological evidences, these goods were available both for the inhabitants of the commercial harbour area and for the residents of the
“upper” city and even the suburbs, that testifies some prosperity of the local population and a positive commercial atmosphere in the city during the Genoa period of its history. But even after the Ottomans conquest of the Crimea in 1475, Spanish ceramics in a small amount still continued to come to Sudak. Moreover, the Italian majolica, which has been in fashion in Europa since the end of the 15th century, was also found in this site. Both of these facts are most likely related to the commercial activities of the Italians. So there is a reason to assume that the former owners of Sudak during some time after the conquest of the Crimea by the Turks still had access to local markets.

Статья посвящена предварительной характеристике комплекса керамической посуды из раскопок Старого Арсенала в Киеве – территории женского Вознесенского монастыря XVII – начала XVIII в. Выделены наиболее многочисленные виды сосудов и отмечены их характерные особенности, в том числе посуды с клеймами, импортной керамики. Приводятся некоторые аналогии формам и орнаментам посуды среди керамики других территорий, а также среди книжной графики того времени.

The article is dedicated to a preliminary characteristic of the ceramic crockery complex from archaeological excavations in the convent „The Resurrection” of the 17th – early 18th centuries, which is located on the territory of the Old Arsenal in Kyiv. The characteristic qualities of the most multiple vessels are marked out as well as the crockery with brands and import ceramics. They carry out analogies of the crockery shapes and ornaments among ceramics of other territories and among book graphs of that time either.

With the second volume of the "Archaeology of the border", in 1999 the Società Friulana di Archeologia (Friulian Society of Archaeology) publishes the proceedings of the study day held in Udine in 1996 on the theme "Ceramics from the Late Middle Ages to the Renaissance in Italy and northeastern transalpine areas": in that text is placed this essay that presents an important finding of ceramic pottery of medieval Aquileia that took place in 1994/96; furthermore it presents also the finding (1993) of the ruins of a medieval kiln that was in activity in the same city of Aquileia. Herein, the study is reproduced complete with the table of drawings (ousted by mistake from the editor) and the table of misprints

Medieval and modern ceramic in north-western Slovakia. This article summarizes the results of my thesis as well as reflects some new facts from my doctoral work. The main goal was to create the evolutional schemes of pottery from cities, castles, bulwarks, manors and similar fortified high-placed locations of north-western Slovakia. Tiles and pipes, as part of potter’s production, are included too. The whole described collection dates back to a relatively long time period, from the High Middle Ages to the end of the Early Modern Age (13th – 18th centuries). The secondary aims include the relations of pottery production to the neighbour-ing areas (south-western Slovakia, both Silesias, north-eastern Moravia, and Lesser Poland), the creation of ceramic-material classes of pottery and the percentage and typological comparison of ceramics from cities, castles and fortified high-placed locations

Medieval Islamic unglazed molded ware is a common but little-studied type with great potential for use as an interpretive tool in Islamic archaeology. This article presents the current state of knowledge about molded ceramics by organizing and synthesizing the evidence from published sites across the Islamic world and, using the information from these sites, generates a new typology with distinct periodization between the 9th to the 13th century. This typology is then compared with stratigraphically excavated finds from a newly-discovered 13th century molded ceramic workshop at the site of medieval Bālis, Syria. Finally, the article argues that, like fine glazed ceramics, molded wares function as carriers of cultural meaning. Because they imitate more expensive luxury items made of metal, molded wares provide tantalizing clues to the taste and consumption patterns of a kind of “middle class” of urban dwellers in medieval Syria.

A booklet produced for the National Museum of Archaeology (Heritage Malta) for the opening in 2018 of a temporary exhibition entitled 'Core & Periphery - Mdina and Hal Safi in the 9th and 10 centuries'. The booklet has a didactic intent, aiming to present some aspects of the archaeology of the Maltese archaeology from the end of the Byzantine occupation and the start of the Arab/Aghlabid period. Two archaeological situations of this period are presented and contrasted - from urban and rural contexts - and set against some of the wider Mediterranean developments.

A 12th-13th-century A.D. ceramic assemblage from Alexander’s Hill at Sagalassos in southwestern Turkey provides new evidence for the typo-chronological study of Byzantine pottery. A functional analysis of the assemblage, along with textual and iconographic evidence, archaeozoological and palynological analyses, and chemical analysis of cooking-pot residues, contributes to the reconstruction of diet and cooking practices in Anatolia. While baked fish, vegetables, pulses, and bread are usually regarded as the staples of Byzantine peasant cuisine, diners at Sagalassos were enjoying beef stews before the Fourth Crusade, when the technique of stewing meat was allegedly introduced to the eastern Mediterranean from the West.

Work enclosing 11 to 16 century summarizes current knowledge. It is not limited to Bohemia and Moravia, as stated in the title, but also encompassed Silesia. It ranks only those files finds or individual discoveries that are datable. This paper also mentions sources stored in museum collections. Their randomness corrects the comparison and verification. It discusses the current state of research on medieval pottery, clarifies the chronological problems, sociological context, social and economic status of medieval potters, production process, typology, decoration and branding. Eventually, the site stated.

Árpád-kori fehér kerámiánk kutatása közel nyolcvan éves múltra tekinthet vissza. Elsőként Höllrigl József foglalkozott a témával. (Höllrigl 1930) Holl Imre részletesen foglalkozott az edénytípus készítési módjával és elterjedésével (Holl 1956), a budai vár területén előkerült nagy mennyiségű kerámiaanyag pedig arra ösztönözte, hogy tipológia szempontból is vizsgálja a középkori fazekas-termékeket. (Holl 1963) Holl összefoglalója óta szinte csak ásatási jelentésekben találkozhatunk új adatokkal. A budai várban folyó feltárásokból sok esetben pénzekkel jól keltezhető rétegekből előkerült nagy mennyiségű fehér kerámia a kutatás „alfájává” teszi Budát. Zolnay László szerint a fehércserép 13. századi megjelenése, és a század folyamán tömegessé válása a helyi fazekasság fejlődésének jele. (Zolnay¬–Boldizsár 1977) A Hadtörténeti Múzeum udvarán Bencze Zoltán tárt fel két 13. század közepén feltöltött sziklagödröt, melynek betöltésében fehér, csigavonallal díszített fazekak és egy palack mellett  négy IV. Béla pénzt is találtak. (Bencze 1992) A budai Szent György téri, a 13. század közepétől keltezhető gödrök leletanyagának döntő többségét szintén a fehér kerámia teszi ki, de megjelenik a vörös festés is az edényeken. (Tóth 2004) A Károly Róbert 1332–35 között vert ezüst dénárjával keltezett rétegben már megjelennek a szögfej, és a galléros profilú peremek, díszítésként pedig a bordázott oldal. A 14–17. századi rétegekben látványosan lecsökkent a fehér kerámia aránya. Az ugyanitt feltárt un. szobros gödör leletanyaga kapcsán Veres Szilvia megjegyzi, hogy a 13. századra a fehér anyagú csigavonallal díszített fazekak, bögrék, csészék jellemzőek. A vörös festéses un. fogazott sávokkal díszített, asztali használatra szánt korsók a 14. században jelentek meg, de csak a 15. században terjedtek el. (Veres 1999)  A Budaújlakon feltárt Árpád-kori majorság kerámialeletei kapcsán Kárpáti Zoltán hívta fel a figyelmet arra, hogy a fehér kerámiák között van egy korai 12. század legvégén – 13. század elején használt csoport (fazekak, palackok), amelyen már megjelenik egy fröcskölt típusú vörös festés. (Kárpáti 2002)
A Buda környéki falusias jellegű településekről is nagy mennyiségben került elő fehér kerámia a legutóbbi évtized nagy beruházásait (Budapest–Kőérberki-lakópark, MO-ás autópálya) megelőző régészeti feltárásoknak köszönhetően. (Tere 2005) A tatárjárás pusztításai elől elrejtett kincsek között is találhatunk jól keltezhető fehér edényeket. (Parádi 1963)
A fehér kerámia elterjedési területe Buda környékére és elsősorban az északkelet-magyarországi régióra tehető. A 13. század első felében már biztosan adatolható az északkeletet- magyarországi falvakból, várakból is: Hejőkeresztúr, Mezőnyárád, Kács, Salgó, Mátraszőlős, Komlóska-Pusztavár. A fehér kerámiacsoport 15–17. századi történetét Muhi mezőváros feltárása kapcsán Tomka Gábor dolgozta fel. (Tomka 2004) 
Annak ellenére, hogy az anyagában fehér kerámia a 19. századig jelen van a magyar kerámiaanyagban, a régészet az Árpád-kori leleteket nem kötötte egyetlen nyersanyaglelőhelyhez, hanem hangsúlyozta a helyi alapanyag-használatát. A néprajzkutatók a gömöri lelőhelyekhez kötik a kerámia-típus kialakulását. (Kresz 1960; Kiss 2006) A 13. században a fehér kerámia a Kárpát-medence központi, Buda környéki részein és az ország északkeleti részén néhány évtized alatt uralkodóvá vált. Míg az 13–14. században 40-90 százalék körüli volt egy-egy lelet együttesen belül, addig a 16–17. században már csak 10 százalék. A Dunántúlon viszont ritka, csak néhány darabot ismerünk (1. ábra).
Az újabb északkelet-magyarországi régészeti kutatások olyan leletegyütteseket hoztak a felszínre, amelyekben a budaitól eltérő jellegű sárgás-világosbarnás rózsaszínű kerámiák már a 12–13. századtól jelen vannak.
Karos-Tobolykán Wolf Mária nyolc földbeásott házat, tizenkét szabadban álló kemencét és több gödröt is talált. (Wolf 1991) A település objektumait a leletanyag alapján a 9–12. század között használták. Az utolsó fázisban finomabb anyagú, feltehetően soványított, magasabb technikai színvonalon kidolgozott edények tartoznak. A fazekak bordával tagolt peremmel készültek, jellegzetes díszítésük a szélesebb közökkel bekarcolt csigavonal, a vállon esetleg 1-2 sorban körbefutó hullámvonal vagy bevagdosás, de előfordul a fogaskerék díszítés is. Az edények világos barnás színűek, oxidált körülmények között, kontroláltabb hőmérsékleten égtek ki. (2. ábra)
Hejőkürtön Pusztai Tamás két 12-13. századi félig földbemélyített gödörházat és egy árkot talált, melyet Árpád-kori tanyaszerű településként értelmezhetünk. A lelőhelyről származó kerámia igen egységes képet mutat: mindegyik az un. bézs-csoportba tartozik. Díszítésük: vállukon hullámvonal és körömbenyomkodást utánzó hosszan elnyúló bevagdosás, hasukon széles közökkel bekarcolt csigavonal. Több bogrács töredéke is előkerült, melyek ugyanebből az anyagból, hasonló díszítéssel készültek. (3. ábra)
Mezőkeresztes-Lucernáson 26 Árpád-kori objektum, házak, gödrök és egy árok került elő. A kerámiaanyagot alapanyag, díszítés és formai szempontok alapján csoportosítottam. A lelőhely legkésőbbi leleteit a 1–3. házcsoportban, illetve a 8. és 6. házban és a hozzájuk tartozó gödrökből adatolhatjuk. A betöltésüket a tisztított, szemcsés homokkal soványított, bézs színűre, vagy sötétszürkésre kiégő fazekak, cserépbográcsok keltezik a 12-13. századra. (4. ábra)
Felsőzsolca-Várdombon neolit, bronzkori, császárkori és 10-11. századi objektumok mellett sikerült feltárnunk a lelőhely nevét adó késő Árpád-kori, mesterséges halmon kialakított várat/curiát. A várhoz tartozó építmények – a központi épület, szabadban álló kemencék és gödrök – betöltéséből a késő Árpád-korra jellemző bézs-csoportba sorolható és vasmentes-fehér budai típusú edények kerültek elő. Utóbbiaknak a szövete és anyagösszetétele teljesen idegen a „helyi” kerámiától, így valószínűnek tűnik, hogy kereskedelmi kapcsolatok révén kerülhettek a dél-borsodi régióba.  A felsőzsolcai vár árkában talált vörös festéses indás palack alapanyagának összetevői, anyaga és szövete egyértelműen a 12-13. századi bézs csoportéhoz hasonlít, nem a vasmenetes fehér-szürkésfehér áruhoz. Karos-Tobolykáról,  Hejőkürt-Cifrahátról, Mezőkeresztes-Lucernás lelőhelyekről, valamint Felsőzsolcáról világos barnás rózsaszínűre (röviden bézs színűre) kiégett kerámiák, Felsőzsolca-Várdombról klasszikus budai típusú fehér kerámiák archeometriai elemzését végeztük el. Az un. bézs-csoportba sorolt edényeket tiszta, gondosan előkészített agyagból készítették, melyhez szemcsés homokot adtak soványító anyagként. Az edények alapanyagául szolgáló agyag az archeometriai vizsgálatok szerint helyben bányászott, a lelőhelyek geoföldrajzi környezetétől nem idegen. A 12–13. században csigavonalas, vállukon bevagdosott, vagy hullámvonallal díszített, bordával tagolt, vállban kiszélesedő, öblös hasú fazekak mellett főként csigavonallal díszített cserépbográcsok készülnek ilyen anyagból. Alapanyaguk sokkal finomabb, formázásuk fejlettebb, gyorsabban forgó, nehezebb korongon történt, mint az a korszak fehér fazekainál feltételezhető. Feltételezem, hogy ebből a bézs kerámiából fejlődik ki valószínűleg a 14. századra az „sárgásfehér” csoport, melyre már Holl Imre és Gál-Mlakár Viktor is felhívta a figyelmet.(Holl 1963, Gál-Mlalár 2007)
A 13. században –pontosabb meghatározásra jelenleg nem áll elegendő adat a rendelkezésünkre – szintén a bézs a csoportból fejlődik ki, egy gondosan kivitelezett, engobe-val bevont asztali kerámia csoport, melybe kezdetben főként palackok, később kancsók, korsók is megjelentek. A felületüket az engobe-on felül, valószínűleg a buda környékéről származó festett fehér kerámiák hatására, sávos vörös festéssel díszítették.
A tanulmányban bemutatott négy északkelet-magyarországi lelőhely kerámiaanyagának archeometriai vizsgálatát Szilágyi Veronika végezte. Az eredményeknek köszönhetően új adatokhoz jutottunk a késő Árpád-kori fehér kerámia elterjedéséről és importjáról. A Szilágyi Veronika kezdeményezésére alakult egy munkacsoport (Rácz Tibor Ákos, Pest megyei, és Gál-Mlakár Viktor Északkelet-Magyarországi lelőhelyekkel), mely célul tűzte ki a fehér kerámia nyersanyagának pontos meghatározását, származási helyének felderítését, a szakirodalomban már korábban is felvetett sárga, rózsaszín, szürkésfehér variánsok elkülönítését, valamint a 13–14. századi fehéráru 15–16. századi továbbélésének vizsgálatát.

The research presented in this paper concerns the Early Medieval burial sites in Eastern Belgium of the Merovingian period, which is to be  situated between approximately the 5th and 8th centuries AD. Little synthesizing research has been done on this topic so far, but a reasonable amount of information concerning the burial sites has been published since the last World War. First, a selection was made of burial sites that were published in sufficient detail. These sites were chosen as the basis for all later analyses that were conducted in this research. The information which was published was rewritten in the form of a GIS database (with the exception of the site at Orp‐le‐Grand – sadly, a site plan is unavailable for this excavation), which allowed for proper analysis of temporal and spatial factors. Also, a new typology was written for the ceramics which were retrieved from the selected burial sites. This allowed for renewed analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of certain, with respect to older typologies, refined types. Problems arose concerning the distinction between chronological and spatial distribution of these types in burial sites. It was concluded that for some of the graveyards a chronological distinction seems to be the more plausible explanation, while for other graveyards, most notably the larger ones at Hamoir and Rosmeer, there seems to be a diachronic development of certain different parts of the cemetery. A large range of different burial customs were perceived, both concerning the construction of the grave as well as concerning the type of burial gifts that were deposited herein. It was perceived that the deposition of weapons or jewellery in graves does not in all cases (necessarily) seem to relate to the biological gender of the interred person (based on physical anthropological evidence), nor does the deposition of other grave goods. Graves of infants were only recorded in two of the 145 cases for which age was determined, which leaves us wondering in which way deceased infants were disposed of. Ceramics found in the graves were largely of the same type as ceramics found in settlements, though this does not hold the other way around – large types of ceramics were only documented in the settlements. Although a typology was created for the ceramics, there is an immensely large variation in and between the types. This, and the relatively small areas in which certain types were attested, leads us to believe that ceramics were mostly produced at a very small scale. It must be said that only analysis of the fabrics can shed more light on this matter. It was concluded that the grave ritual as a whole can – taking into account all this variation – no longer be seen as a ‘standardised process’, which is in vogue for the few centuries that make up the Merovingian age, but more as a process in which certain – although unknown – relations between the deceased and their next of kin (but also between the mourning themselves) leave particular material traces, which in some cases are the grave goods.

This research actually needs some nuancing and refining on more than a few occasions (of which several points have already been adressed in the 2015 paper in Terra Incognita 7), although the general line of thought still holds.

O extenso programa de trabalhos arqueológicos decorrente do projecto de ampliação e remodelação do Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro permitiu exumar, no espaço do antigo fórum da cidade romana de Aeminium e sua envolvente, uma significativa colecção de material cerâmico alto-medieval, ancorada entre os séculos IX e XI.
O espólio em questão provém de contextos associados a níveis de aterro e de colmatação de estruturas em negativo que testemunham a espectável persistência ocupacional e transformação deste espaço nevrálgico em época medieval.
Atendendo ao estádio preliminar do estudo que se encontra em desenvolvimento, apresentam-se alguns destes contextos esboçando, em traços gerais, as principais linhas formais e orientações estéticas reveladas nos respectivos lotes cerâmicos. Neste sentido, pretende-se conferir especial realce à presença e convivência de uma diversidade de soluções e influências que marcam a cultura material alto-medieval em Coimbra, localizada, por vários séculos, numa posição de charneira entre o “estandarte” cristão setentrional e o “crescente” meridional.

This study focusses on the role of rural communities in the development of exchange systems during the Carolingian period. To what extent did the consumptive preferences of rural communities influence the flow of goods at a regional and interregional level? This is examined by cataloguing the finds from Carolingian sites in the Netherlands and comparing their distributions between regions. It can be demonstrated that rural dwellers indeed played a part in developments in the production and distribution of goods. At the same time the conducted analyses do not allow the establishment of a single model of how rural dwellers participated in exchange networks of the period. In fact, this study contends that there is little meaning in determining the relative importance of different groups in society for the establishment and maintenance of exchange networks at any one time.

In this publication, we problematise the dating of the earliest medieval pottery production in the South Limburg area (the Netherlands), in relation to pottery production in the surrounding Meuse valley and Rhineland areas. In addition, three hitherto unpublished kilnwasterdeposits are described, providing additional insight into the variety of objects produced in Brunssum, Schinveld and Landgraaf. The present study evaluates the medieval component of a rescue excavation carried out in the outer bailey of Tepenec Castle in 1971-1975. The castle, built during the 1330s-40s, ceased to exist due to war events in the early 15th century. A trench intersected the whole area of the fortified complex transversely from the northwest to the southeast (855 sqm). Two remnants of buildings dated to the High Middle Ages were partially examined. An assemblage of pottery and metal finds makes it possible to date both structuresmainly to the second half of the 14th and the early 15th centuries. The built-up area of the outer bailey cannot be considered a lower castle town but rather the so-called "latrán".
