La rivista "Itineraria" apre uno spazio per ospitare ricerche che affrontino temi e testi connessi al viaggio e alla conoscenza del mondo (ma anche al viaggio immaginario, al viaggio simbolico e metaforico, alle visiones, alla geografia fantastica e alla geografia dell'aldilà) in un'ampia prospettiva filologica che, pur privilegiando la tradizione letteraria latina medievale e umanistica, accolga anche da un lato la cultura classica e dall'altro quella in volgare. La tematica di "Itineraria" abbraccia un arco cronologico e culturale molto ampio: ad esempio dalle cosmologie greche ai peripli, dalla letteratura geografica greco-romana alla cosmografia, dalle visiones agli itineraria, dai mirabilia ai romanzi odeporici, dalle cronache delle Crociate ai pellegrinaggi, dalle relazioni di ambasciatori, missionari e mercanti alla cartografia, dai portolani al viaggio immaginario e alla geografia fantastica.

This chapter concludes with a brief excursion into a key factor that makes simulations exciting: the students' drives to see if they can “do better” than their historical counterparts. It seeks to understand why students are attracted to simulations in the classroom. The chapter then mentions the author's simulation Rivalries, in which the student representing William Churchill faces truly daunting challenges. The chapter highlights questions like: Can you, as Galileo, persuade the Catholic Church to adopt some of your ideas? Can you, as Marlowe, become more famous than Shakespeare as the best playwright of Elizabethan theater? Can you, as Churchill, save not just Britain but the British Empire? Can you, in short, beat Churchill?

espanolDesde 1994, la Escuela Espanola de Historia y Arqueologia en Roma (EEHAR-CSIC) coordina un proyecto de investigacion arqueologica en la antigua ciudad de Tusculum. En 2012 se inicio un nuevo proyecto, «Tusculum en epoca medieval: territorio, paisaje, economia y sociedad» con la clara voluntad de dotar a la propuesta de una nueva orientacion metodologica centrada en las fases historicas menos conocidas de la ciudad: la Antiguedad tardia y el Medioevo. Dos anos despues, en plena madurez del proyecto, el enfoque multidisciplinario incluye excavaciones arqueologicas, estudios geofisicos, estudios arqueobiologicos, analisis topograficos y por medio de fotografia aerea con dron y cometa, asi como el estudio de los materiales arqueologicos y la informacion textual. En esta publicación se recogen los trabajos presentados en el XXI Congreso Nacional de Historia del Arte (CEHA), celebrado en el Palacio de la Magdalena de Santander entre los días 20 al 23 de septiembre de 2016. El eje vertebrador de dicho congreso giró en torno a una temática a la vez monográfica y transversal: LA FORMACIÓN ARTÍSTICA. Se aborda este objetivo desde la doble perspectiva que plantean los dos protagonistas principales del diálogo artístico (el creador y el espectador), pasando por el historiador del arte como mediador entre ambos. Empleando este hilo conductor, se traza el rico panorama investigador nacional, tratando de reflejar las principales orientaciones metodológicas de la disciplina, así como las líneas de trabajo más consolidadas y las emergentes. Las aportaciones en cada uno de los seis bloques (desde el gremio, la formación académica o la universitaria, la educación de la mirada, la crisis de la Historia del Arte, las fuentes, la historiografía y la literatura artística y, por último, el dedicado a proyectos, tesis y grupos de I+D+i) presentan una visión actualizada de algunas de las tendencias de la investigación en Historia del Arte.

Despite centuries of research, much about the barbarian migrations that took place between the fourth and sixth centuries in Europe remains hotly debated. To better understand this key era that marks the dawn of modern European societies, we obtained ancient genomic DNA from 63 samples from two cemeteries (from Hungary and Northern Italy) that have been previously associated with the Longobards, a barbarian people that ruled large parts of Italy for over 200 years after invading from Pannonia in 568 CE. Our dense cemetery-based sampling revealed that each cemetery was primarily organized around one large pedigree, suggesting that biological relationships played an important role in these early medieval societies. Moreover, we identified genetic structure in each cemetery involving at least two groups with different ancestry that were very distinct in terms of their funerary customs. In the Orthodox Church of St. George in Łobez, in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, there are two standing icon cases (kiots). The first one features an icon of St. Alexander Nevsky in the central position, with St. Xenia of My- lasa, also known as Xenia the Roman, above it. The second kiot in the center holds an icon of St. Andrew of Crete and the Prophet Hosea, and above them, there are icons of St. Nicholas, St. Michael of Tver, and St. George.
Stylistic analysis has determined that these icons were created by the same professional painter with academic training, in a realistic style characteristic of Russian icon painting in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The choice of saints depicted on the icons was driven by the desire to commemorate the miraculous rescue of the imperial family from a train accident on October 17, 1888, in Borki near Kharkov. Alexander Nevsky was the patron of Tsar Alexander III, and Nicholas, Michael of Tver, George, and Xenia were patrons of the tsar’s children. The liturgical commemorations of Andrew of Crete and the Prophet Hosea coincided with the date of the disaster. The icons in Łobez were therefore created within a few years after 1888. It cannot be ruled out that they were originally located in churches in Szóstka and Worsy in the Lublin region.

We present a reflection on the application of digital approaches to the specificity of notarial diplomatic texts, specifically, the research and analysis of notarial documents. We begin with an albeit short, but objective, definition of the concepts that pertain to the two disciplines that study the subject: Notarial Diplomatic and History of Notarial Law. Bearing in mind that the discussion about the relationship between new technologies and its application in Diplomatics is not new, we present a brief synopsis of the considerations of some authors who have written on the topic and the subsequent debate on the advantages and disadvantages of its use. Finally, we will provide an appreciation of the applicability of new technologies as auxiliaries to the interpretation of notarial documentation, giving some practical examples.

In the Introduction to Volume 4 I am describing my approach to John, and how it seems he was as an Evangelist, an artist and poet. This includes some time spent in trying to appreciate the tensions in John which an artistic temperament must contend with, and which I feel can be intuited in his Gospel. To do this I have shared some details about Ephesus and its archaeology as well as information I received there from Christians descended from the early Church.
I have provided guidelines for approaching the text in this way, which I hope will help the reader to discover its riches. My work in this volume is based on John in the Aramaic which provides rich insights not found in the Greek. The Introduction is entitled Imaging the Depths and that gives some insight into this volume’s focus on image. There are some overlaps with The Passion of the Word, of course, as the images in the Fourth Gospel reside in the text and I have referenced them.

La recuperació del passat medieval de les illes als arxius: els projectes de localització i edició documentals per a Quios, Creta, Rodes i Xipre, un model i una proposta per a Menorca. L’article presenta un repàs historiogràfic i bibliogràfic a les edicions de documents associats a diferents illes de la Mediterrània oriental que van perdre els seus arxius per diferents vicissituds històriques. Aquestes edicions de documentació medieval i moderna i algunes de les iniciatives que les han impulsat es plantegen com un model vàlid per a l’illa de Menorca i es proposen alguns arxius i fons que podrien donar lloc a iniciatives editorials similars.

Przedstawiany tekst stanowi wspomnienie dość osobliwej przygody autora, mianowicie tego, że w 2011 roku został on obdarzony godnością "Małopolanina Roku". Wyróżnienia "Człowieka roku" w tym samym czasie otrzymali była premier RP, Hanna Suchocka, oraz były prymas RP, Józef Glemp. Większa część artykułu poświęcona jest jednak temu, że obok autora takie samo wyróżnienie otrzymał także Igor Mitoraj, wybitny rzeźbiarz. Warto przeczytać, bo mowa jest także o grobie Mitoraja w Peterasanta, niedaleko Carrary, miejsca, w którym wydobywano marmur na słynne rzeźby Michała Anioła (m.in. Pieta)
