Interessada no fenômeno do sebastianismo, isto é a crença de que o rei D.
Sebastião, desaparecido na batalha de Alcácer-Quibir (1578) iria retornar para
estabelecer um império de felicidade em Portugal, dominado pela Espanha
durante a União Ibérica (1580-1640), a autora preocupou-se em analisar aquele fenômeno na longa duração. Ao elaborar o trabalho, sua questãoprincipal era: que fatores possibilitaram o surgimento do sebastianismo em Portugal no século XVI?

O artigo aborda o discurso político produzido pela realeza portuguesa na passagem do séc. XIV para o XV, após a Revolução de Avis. A nova dinastia, diante da tarefa de legitimação do seu poder, desenvolve um discurso de afirmação da identidade nacional e promoção do rei, antes tido como um primus inter pares, primeiro entre os iguais, a um soberano de fato no reino português. Tal discurso manifesta-se sobretudo no plano literário: pela primeira vez em Portugal, surge a figura do cronista oficial do reino e os próprios príncipes produzem obras literárias.

Resumo
Este estudo tem por objetivo dar a conhecer o modo como o Homem medieval enfrentou os desafios que se colocavam à sua saúde e bem-estar na cidade e região de Coimbra, nos finais da Idade Média. Começamos por descrever alguns dos tratamentos e cuidados dispensados aos doentes no meio urbano e social onde estavam integrados, focando-nos depois na assistência prestada aos enfermos nos hospitais de Coimbra e de Montemor-o-Velho. Por fim, centraremos a nossa atenção nas medidas de controlo de doenças contagiosas, como a lepra, e de surtos de peste, adotadas pelos poderes civis. **//**
Abstract
The goal of this article is to analyse how the medieval Man faced the challenges to his health and wellbeing in the late medieval Coimbra city and region. We start to describe the treatment and care given to the sick in their urban and social environment, focusing on those provided in Coimbra and Montemor-o-Velho hospitals. Finally, we will examine the measures taken by civil authorities to control plague outbreaks and other contagious diseases, like leprosy.

This study analyses the emergence of royal signatures in Portugal and their diplomatic, political and cultural meaning based on a collection of documents signed, manu propria, by King Dom Dinis (1279-1325). It further discusses the historical importance of the «Rei»’s signature as a symbol of the Portuguese monarch’s public political image in the framework of Hispanic regal representation traditions.

Os fragmentos de pergaminho medievais e modernos foram desprezados e ignorados por séculos e só começaram a ser revalorizados a partir do século XX, fruto de iniciativas individuais de alguns investigadores. Fragmentos de pergaminhos usados como folhas de guarda ou de encadernação improvisada em manuscritos (códices e documentos avulsos) e impressos abundam em todos os arquivos europeus e nos mais diversos fundos e colecções, bem como em bibliotecas. Nesta comunicação, detalha-se o conteúdo dos fragmentos portugueses encontrados no Arquivo Municipal de Loulé e
apresenta-se a sua transcrição integral.

La publicación en 1977 de A Critical Bibliography of
Hispanic Arthurial Material, de Harvey L. Sharrer (Londres, Grant & Cutler) contribuyó a un mejor conocimiento de los textos conservados, ediciones y estudios de la literatura artúrica y tristaniana medieval en España y Portugal. Treinta años después , este artículo amplía los contenidos de aquel volumen, al recoger los resultados del
descubrimiento de nuevos testimonios y de las últimas investigaciones sobre este ámbito, en lengua catalana , gallego-portuguesa y castellana de la Edad Media.

Resumo
O trabalho realizado sobre o Cerco de Lisboa de 1384, focado nas grandes crónicas desta altura, vai-se afastar de uma análise ao cerco em si, ou seja, nas defesas da cidade, nos armamentos dos sitiantes e engenhos de guerra; mas sim numa apreciação de todos os fatores exteriores, como redes de comunicação e abastecimento, operações militares nestas mesmas, e importância de fortificações, como pontos de acesso, infiltração ou de emboscada, tanto para com os defensores ou para os invasores.

Abstract
The following paper about the Siege of Lisbon of 1384, mainly focused on the great chronicles of the time, will be deviating from a straight analysis of the siege itself, that is, the city’s defence, the besiegers armaments and siege engines; but will be an appreciation of every external factor, such as, lines of communication and supply, military operations in these, and the importance of fortifications, as access, infiltration and staging points, whether to the defenders or the invaders

The Black Death had an unparalleled impact in the history of Europe, and of all Old World, generally. Consensus around this interpretation and a vast and consolidated historiography – enriched by the contributions of physical and life sciences – has been allowing extraordinary new international achievements. However, the characteristics of the surviving Portuguese documentation requires an indirect approach, through the use of economic sources, mainly property management. This preference allows to reveal short-term tendencies, as the fall of property rents, instantaneous and very significant in the main institutions studied, but allows equally to discard the direct influence of the Black Death in processes such as monetarization or the preferential length of agrarian contracts. Without the possibility of present mortality rates, due to the lack of data, the demographic fall is perceptible; however, the volume of deaths – no matter its real value – was not able to interrupt the normal functioning of institutions for more than a few months. This does not mean that there were not perennial marks of the plague, surviving in the memory of those who survived and their descendants. It is clear, however, that only a succession of other negative events – earthquakes, droughts, new plagues and wars, among others – allowed that these acute consequences could last, with the maintenance of low rents which, in some way, reveal a smaller population, but not smaller enough to provoke a remarkable abandonment of fields and/or villages. It was not a prosperous kingdom the one the Black Death encountered, and even less the one which emerged after the plague. However, the infamous epidemic seems to have failed to produce remarkable structural changes, even if its impact and its consequences were important, immediate and clear to the eyes of those who experienced it.

This article tried to analyse the legislation of these two kings and kingdoms, first separately, then comparatively, to find similarities between both bodies of law, so as to question whether they represented or not a type of strategy common to both 13th century kings: affirm personal power and/or keep their subjects contented.

The study of medieval alveitaria in Portugal focused mainly on the manuscripts containing treatises on the topic, written in Galician Portuguese. That study deals especially with textual and philological aspects, relegating the socioeconomic dimension of the practice and the individuals to a secondary role. The challenges raised by the low number of practicians explicitly identified as alveitaresby the sources (explainable by an eventual pluriactivity) and the plasticity of the concepts are considerable, but the analysis of the profiles of a group of Portuguese practicians, from different religious backgrounds and active not only in Portugal, but also in the Portuguese territories of Northern Africa and India, allows us to draw, for the first time, a portrait of the Portuguese medieval alveitar and his practice.

Toda identidade nacional é parte histórica, parte imaginada e parte documentada.

Genetic genealogy is a rapidly growing field. The potential for genetics to make genealogical connections and break brick walls is starting to be untapped. This is more so for Latin American and Caribbean societies where limited or non-existent documentation is a reality. This article uses advanced genetic testing to draw genealogies for a particular set of Puerto Rican families, the Sotomayor and Colón families, with connections to the Iberian Pereira lineage. In the critical analysis of the existing fragmented and isolated documentation with advanced genetic testing, mainly Y-DNA, and in its proper historical context, long-standing brick walls have been broken. The study also illustrates, through the prism of genetics, the complex anthroponymy system of Iberian surnames in the American context, which gave a legitimate and significant role to maternal ancestry. As one of the very few instances of a Y-DNA genetic match between two men of different surnames at the edge of genealogical time frames, this study offers insights into the larger use of genetics for genealogy and anthroponymy.

The medieval coinage of Portugal provides useful insight into the history of this fascinating country. Beginning with the emergence of the kingdom under Afonso I Henriques in 1139,  the coinage consisted largely of dinheiros in base silver alloy. In the following centuries a wide variety of denominations in silver, gold and copper alloy were issued. An influx of gold from West Africa in the 15th century made the country rich, and this was reflected in an abundant gold currency.

With the rise of the royal bastard D. João (1357-1433), Master of Avis, to the Portuguese throne in the late 14th century and his marriage to the English noble Philippa of Lancaster (1360-1415), the kingdom witnessed the beginning of a new dynasty and a new royal family. Comprised by the couple and their six children, the first generation of Avis would be known over time by the significant expression of "illustrious generation". The construction of the image of an "exemplary" family dates back to the reign of the founder and continues throughout the 15th century, with the development of an entire legitimizing and propagandist program of the new royal house. Through word, expressively by drawing up a body of law, by writing royal chronicles, technical and moral treatises (composed by Avis princes themselves or royal servants), the house of Avis sought to corroborate their place in the Portuguese throne and the undeniability of its power. In a context of appreciation of the marital family by Christian morality, the first generation of Avis would identify itself and would be represented by values such as virtue, devotion, loyalty, honor, love and concord. Working toward a shared monarchy, the royal family would not be unscathed to the setbacks and political struggles of its time, going through hard times that partly fractured its exemplary image or the image of some of its members. However, the memoirs basis constituted by the royal couple King John I and Philippa would remain untouched, serving at different times to retrieve the image of the illustrious infants and even to propagandize the following kings of the dynasty.

In 1325, Elizabeth of Aragon , widow of King Denis and the sixth queen of Portugal left on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela “less than a year since the King's passing” and without mentioning her destination beforehand. Of the visit to the Apostle’s grave, which is recorded in the exquisite illuminated manuscript of the Lineage of the Kings of Portugal, remained the memory of the impressive gifts presented. From the sanctuary, Queen Elizabeth brought a pilgrim’s staff, a gift from the archbishop, with which she wished to be buried. It shall remain a precious relic, and has been preserved to the present day, but it is also an iconographic symbol and is the grounds for a rich legendary tradition mainly related to places where the queen lived or that she may have passed through. Some legends began to mark places where, according to tradition, she rested during her pilgrimage. Though they cannot be considered historical sources, they are nonetheless interesting documents for the history of worship and popular traditions about Elizabeth and they provide clues for a future outline of the path followed by the queen in Portugal. In Galicia, Santiago de Compostela still preserves the memory of the Pilgrim Queen, who is remembered in the toponymy and in a rare 17th-century image, exhibited at Museo de las Peregrinaciones y de Santiago (Museum of the Pilgrimages and St. James), in which she is portrayed with the hat and scallops of St. James pilgrims.

Nesta dissertação pretendemos estudar o funcionamento e as dinâmicas
portuárias de Cascais durante a expansão marítima portuguesa Quatrocentista, altura em que esta vila já se distinguia como centro económico exportador de um pequeno
hinterland onde se destacavam as produções provenientes de Colares e de Sintra.
Será dada especial atenção às vertentes de apoio à navegação e defesa costeira.
Neste sentido, e face às condicionantes geográficas, veremos as águas de Cascais como escala quase que obrigatória para todo o movimento marítimo com destino a Lisboa e o seu território como parte integrante de um complexo defensivo que se estendia de Sintra até à capital do Reino, o qual terá começado a ganhar forma durante o período de ocupação islâmica da Península Ibérica.

In this dissertation we intend to study the working methods and dynamics of the port of Cascais throughout the maritime expansion of the fifteenth century, when this community was the economic and trade centre of a small hinterland with most of the output coming from the region of Colares and Sintra.
Special attention will be given to the navigation support and coastal defence dimensions. In this sense, and in view of the geographical constraints, we will see Cascais waters as a mandatory stopover for all maritime motion with destination to Lisbon and its territory as a part of a defensive complex that extended itself from Sintra to the capital of the Kingdom, which had started to take shape during the Islamic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula.

Medieval and modern parchment fragments have been neglected and ignored for centuries on and only were appreciated in the 20th century, due to individual projects carried out by researchers. This work aims at describing what has been done in Portugal in this field and presents a detailed inventory of 108 Portuguese fragments found in the Portuguese National Archive (Torre do Tombo).

“A reconstituição do arquivo municipal medieval: o que dizem os inventários medievais”, apresentada no Workshop “Descobrir as Pequenas Vilas de Fronteira: Fontes para o Estudo da Paisagem Urbana, Vínculos e Fluxos”, projecto sediado no Instituto de Estudos Medievais da FCSH-UNL, Castelo de Vide, Biblioteca Municipal, 26/05/2022.

Construída a partir da segunda metade do século XII, a Sé de Lamego é uma das catedrais mais antigas e emblemáticas do panorama historiográfico e artístico português. Porém, e em contraste com essa importância, os estudos que nas últimas décadas têm sido dedicados a este complexo catedralício e às suas sucessivas fábricas construtivas são resultado de investigações pontuais e dispersas, não existindo até ao momento uma síntese coerente e atualizada que ofereça uma interpretação de conjunto sobre a Sé de Lamego e os seus mais de 800 anos de história.
Procura-se com este livro preencher de algum modo essa lacuna e contribuir para o aprofundar da investigação e do debate interdisciplinar sobre as catedrais portuguesas, através de uma monografia dedicada à Sé duriense assente no rigor científico e na interligação temática e cronológica de diferentes abordagens, que constitui uma renovada e abrangente fonte de estudo e de informação também adequada e acessível ao público em geral.
O esforço de síntese e de contextualização encontra-se presente nas quase 300 páginas desta obra, que reúne as contribuições de nove investigadores especialistas em diversas áreas de estudo, como a História, a História da Arte, a Arquitectura, a Conservação e o Restauro, e em diferentes períodos temporais, da Idade Média à Época Contemporânea, articuladas numa organização temática representativa dos principais momentos históricos, construtivos e artísticos que moldaram a catedral de Lamego durante os seus oito séculos de existência. Assim, o livro aborda a pouco conhecida fase inicial de restauração da diocese e a subsequente construção da catedral românica e gótica; o período áureo da renovação renascentista da Sé, fortemente impulsionada pela actividade mecenática dos bispos de então; os séculos da Contra-Reforma e o seu impacto na organização da diocese e da praxis governativa, traduzida na reformulação arquitetónica e artística que a catedral então sofreu e que lhe conferiu a forma e a projeção que ainda hoje apresenta; não esquecendo também a sua história recente, marcada pelas intervenções da Direção Geral de Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais e pelas campanhas de restauro que a catedral de Lamego conheceu ao longo do século XX.

The handgunners were a portuguese military squad whose emergence is noted during the second quarter of the fifteenth century. They obtained a considerable representation in the king’s army becoming one of the military corps that composed it. This evolution was coinciding with the widespread use of firearms in Europe. The handgunners used portable firearms (like the colobreta or the matchlock) that were, unlike the artillery, loaded and fired by only one person.
The internal organization of the squad was very similar to the one that is observed in the besteiros do conto (crossbowmen), specially in aspects concerning the geographical origin, social group of recruitment and the chain of command. Nonetheless, there were substancial diferences in the recruitment, provided, that the king reinforced the local militias of handgunners with professionalized members that received a considerable anual payment (tença). As for the privileges to which these members were entitled, it is reinforced that they have the exemption of the jugada (an important tax over the agricultural production), except in the cereal production, a concession lost by the besteiros do conto, still in the reign of D. John I.
The reign of King John II (1482-1495) was an important moment for the  definition of the legal components of the squad and for the increase of the number of hangunnners. We registered 416 letters of privilege, distributed by 64 centers of recruitment, in Portuguese territory. Nevertheless, more than the immediate substitution of the besteiros do conto for the handgunners, the royal administration sought throughout the fifteenth century to converge the contributions of the two squads. The military action of handgunners is reported for a considerable part of the Portuguese campaigns in this century (Tangier (1437), Alfarrobeira (1449), Alcácer-Ceguer (1458), Arzila (1471), Toro (1476) and Graciosa (1489)), being, however, only in the Battle of Toro that their participation proved decisive for the outcome of the conflict.

No presente estudo faz-se a história comparada da castanha na alimentação e gastronomia portuguesas na longa duração. As fontes consideradas, na sua maioria escritas (tanto literárias, como documentais e técnicas), cobrem cerca de 26 séculos, da Antiguidade clássica, atravessando os espaços europeus historicamente ligados ao cultivo e aproveitamento da castanha, até ao Portugal contemporâneo. O vasto universo de materiais disponíveis obrigou ao estabelecimento de critérios precisos de seleção das fontes, condicionados pelo objetivo principal do estudo: estabelecer a pegada literária da castanha. Assim, o foco da análise recaiu sobre testemunhos escritos sobre o uso da castanha na alimentação humana, buscando para cada época a tipologia de textos mais abundante em termos informativos: para a Antiguidade, textos literários e médicos gregos e romanos; para a Idade Média, documentação régia circunscrita sobretudo ao séc. XIII; para as Épocas Moderna e Contemporânea, os manuscritos, livros e revistas culinárias. A estrutura do trabalho reflete as principais conclusões alcançadas: a castanha como fruto básico da alimentação de populações específicas e consumido em contextos de carência, em que funciona como substituto do alimento primordial, o pão (ponto 1: A castanha, um alimento de sobrevivência); a castanha como património gastronómico, moldado pelas preocupações dietéticas (ponto 2: A castanha, um prazer da mesa em diálogo com as normas dietéticas; ponto 2.1: Consumo da castanha no Portugal moderno, gastronomia e dietética); a cultura, o consumo e as conceções gastronómicas e dietéticas associadas à castanha para Portugal têm raízes em tempos anteriores à fundação da nacionalidade (ponto 1.1: Cultura e consumo de castanha na Antiguidade: herança clássica e realidade portuguesa); a identificação de um “receituário fundador” da castanha nos primeiros tempos da nacionalidade (ponto 1.2: Cultura e consumo de castanha no Portugal medieval); a castanha como ingrediente transversal tanto à cozinha tradicional portuguesa como à cozinha requintada de influência e inspiração estrangeira (ponto 2. 2: Consumo de castanha no Portugal contemporâneo: da “alta cozinha” à cozinha tradicional portuguesa).

What since Roman conquest to the Tenth century was a political, social and cultural entity (Gallaecia) became around 1100 two different ones Galicia and Portugal. This paper tries to bring new light to this historical proccess from a critical whole study of the sources.

This thesis purpose is to disclose of one of the most unique military experiences throughout the Peninsular Middle Ages: the militia of «besteiros do conto» (crossbowmen). Created in Portugal in 1299, by King Denis of Portugal (1279-1325), it was formed by elements recruited mainly within the popular group of craftsmen, with preference for those who had previously shown special aptitudes in handling the crossbow. This military force – who’s member were recruited within the municipal militias – had an autonomous command structure, a special payment system and enjoyed an attractive set of privileges. But beyond that, the «besteiros do conto» were also subject to a set of specific duties such as regular training, owning and the maintaining its weapon in good conditions, and having a specific number of ammunition, in order to keep a high degree of readiness, circumstances that convert them into an authentic elite force.

Thus, we will seek, first, to watch the importance and originality of this militia in the Portuguese medieval military organization. We will do so by analysing how its regulation and organization were promoted and streamlined by the Portuguese crown during Dom João I and Dom Duarte reigns. Next, we will focus our analysis on militia chain of command, recruitment and war practice, by trying to understand how these ordinary men (cobblers, tailors, blacksmiths, carpenters) became a central part of the Portuguese military organization, to the point of, at the beginnings of the 15th century, they already totalled about 5,000 fighters, spread over 300 units recruitment scattered practically throughout the territory of the kingdom.
