This paper uses evangelical reflections on the meaning of "rights" to explore the juridification of religion in contemporary England. Drawing on sixteen months of participatory fieldwork with evangelicals in London, I argue that English evangelicals' critiques of Christian-interest litigation reflect the interaction of local theologies with developments in the law's regulation of religion, developments that have contributed to the relativization of Protestant Christianity even as historic church establishment is maintained. Through an exploration of the tension between the goals of (rights-based) individualism and (Christian) relationalism as they concern the law, I show how litigation can affect religious sub-jectivity even in the absence of a personal experience with the pageantry of the court.

This is a draft section of a chapter in my forthcoming Ph.D., in which I explore the anti-Semitic theories and theological views of 19th-century German preacher and politician Adolf Stoecker. I examine Stoecker's influence on Nazism, and suggest that whilst Stoecker certainly influenced Nazi ideology, it is a mistake to view his own anti-Semitism through the lens of the Holocaust.

Anne Askew is renowned as a Protestant martyr from Henrician England. She has been exalted in Reformation hagiography due to both her stern refusal to recant her beliefs and her fearless death on the pyres of Smithfield. However, this exaltation did not come about as a result of Anne fitting the Protestant mold of womanly obedience and virtue. In reality, while Anne embodied the spirit of the Protestant Reformation, she did so by disobeying holy scripture. This spirit, coupled with the biographical generalities surrounding Anne’s life, made her a perfect vehicle through which both Protestants and Catholics could further their respective religious agendas. By exemplifying certain aspects of Anne’s life as well as her work Examinations in order to foster a Protestant sense of English nationalism, Protestants like John Bale and John Foxe, portrayed her as a model of piety and virtue. In contrast, Catholics such as Robert Parsons used Anne’s scriptural disobedience to condemn her as a flippant blasphemer. However, the real Anne Askew was somewhere in the middle, between the virtuous wife and the heretical whore.

Manuel Cardoso de Macedo (1585–1652) is a man of multiple worlds, as his Azorean Catholic youth, his years living as a protestant in England, his encounter with crypto-Judaism and his eventual embrace of normative Judaism in Amsterdam’s Sephardic community certainly attest. Cardoso wrote an eloquent and carefully crafted spiritual Autobiography during his time living as a Jew in Amsterdam, La Vida del buenaventurado Abraham Pelengrino. In this essay I look at the pivotal years Cardoso spent in England where he first encountered Protestant ideas and I interrogate the way some of those fundamental ideas continue to inform his self-understanding even after his embrace of Judaism. In this essay I examine his religious transformations and the ways he describes those transformations from the vantage point of the Calvinist ideas he encountered especially the concept of providence and grace. The essay asks in what ways is his religious journey fueled by particularly English Protestant sensibilities and concerns. How is his eventual embrace of Judaism informed by this encounter?

This was a research paper for a course entitled Feminist and Multicultural Theologies. I unpack what gender complementarianism is, examine its history, and compare it to how Scripture and earlier Christian Tradition understood gender. This allows me to establish that gender complementarianism is a recent innovation in secular and Christian thinking about gender, and that it can be described as a "trajectory" from Scripture and Tradition on gender, influenced by social, ideological, and intellectual developments in secular societies. I then pursue a critique of gender complementarianism, arguing that it is an "unsatisfactory trajectory" because it has troubling implications for orthodox theology, is not borne out by empirical experience and observation, and has harmful effects on human beings and societies and on ethical development.

At the heart of James B. Torrance’s theological project was a concern to demonstrate the importance of an evangelical account of repentance, over against a legal account. This was a concern that he inherited from John Calvin, who stood as the greatest theological influence on Torrance. Out of his respect for Calvin, Torrance did not seek to commandeer Calvin’s work on this topic for his own project. Rather, he sought to communicate Calvin’s own vision of evangelical repentance to a new generation. Accordingly, this essay will primarily devote itself to exploring Calvin’s position. Before so doing, however, I shall provide a brief analysis of the distinction between the “covenant God” and “contract God,” which underlays Torrance’s emphasis on Calvin’s distinction between legal and evangelical repentance. Also, following our exploration of Calvin, I shall look briefly at Torrance’s own account of evangelical repentance, as it followed Calvin’s trajectory.

Introduction and first chapter of a new book: Even though ‘the crisis of secularism’ was declared decades ago, it remains unresolved. This book argues that its roots are internal to the liberal model of secularism, which emerged from the religious dynamics of the Protestant Reformation. In Europe and India, this model has gone hand in hand with an intolerant anticlerical theology that rejects certain traditions as evil ‘political religion’. Consequently, liberal secularism often harms local forms of coexistence rather than nourishing them.

DEATH AND THE INTERMEDIATE STATE: COMPARISON OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC, ORTHODOX, AND PROTESTANT DOCTRINAL VIEWS ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN’S ETERNAL STATE

THESIS STATEMENT:  The study will contrast and compare Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant doctrines concerning death and the intermediate state, with the purpose of understanding what happens to the soul upon death, the intermediate state, the resurrection of the body, and how its implications affect the way we live our lives in preparation for our eternal life. 

ABSTRACT:  Death is as much a part of life as life itself.  One day, everyone will die, and until that day, most will encounter the death of a friend or a loved one.  For unbelievers, death is tragic, and yet for Christians, death is the servant who ushers us into God’s presence.  However, erroneous beliefs abound to the point of superstition.  In Kallistos Ware’s article, ‘One body in Christ’: Death and the communion of the saints, he described how little the immanence of death is discussed in Western churches and how we should instead discuss it as a vital part of life, rather than something that hits us when we least expect it. 

When Christians fail to properly understand death, the intermediate state, and the resurrection to come, it minimizes the missional impact of the church on our culture.  In N.T. Wright’s book, Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church, Wright explains the importance of understanding the resurrection in such a way that it influences the way we live in the body and propels us to a greater emphasis on building the Kingdom. 

Different theological views abound when the intermediate state is compared between the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant faiths.  Roman Catholicism teaches Purgatory as the state where the souls are purged from venial sins. Alan Schreck’s book, Basics of the Faith: A Catholic Catechism describes the purging process, not as a second chance, but as an exercise of God’s infinite mercy.  Richard P. McBrien’s book, Catholicism, explains the doctrine from Scripture and its development from its patristic roots. 

Kallistos Ware’s book, The Orthodox Way, describes “A journey into the infinite” (Ware, 137) and how this concept befuddles our “fallen imagination” (Ibid.).  Constantine N. Tsirpanlis, Introduction to Eastern Patristic Thought and Orthodox Theology, argues against the doctrine of Purgatory outright, claiming that no eastern or western patristic father taught the this doctrine. 

From an Anglican Protestant perspective, Wright described paradise as the Christian’s state of blissful rest, but not sleep, but in a state of conscious presence with Christ, awaiting the final resurrection.  What we believe about the resurrection, ought to shape the way that we view the mission of the church and the manner in which we live in the body until we meet the Lord Jesus Christ in the veil of death.  Death is the servant who ushers us into the very presence of Christ and is nothing to fear.

Parmi les thèmes et engagements jalonnant l’œuvre et le parcours de Denis de Rougemont, le rapport à la démocratie, au fascisme et au national-socialisme dans les années 1930 suscite des jugements contrastées chez les historiens. Les exégèses du Journal d’Allemagne, publié par Rougemont après un séjour à Francfort en 1935-1936, en sont une bonne illustration. Quand les unes soulignent les prises de position condamnant le régime hitlérien, les autres pointent au contraire les efforts de Rougemont pour se mettre dans la peau des Allemands de l’époque, le peu d’attention accordée au destin des Juifs, la fascination mêlée de répulsion pour le chef charismatique. Ces éloges ou ces critiques, abordant la relation au national-socialisme en termes de répulsion-attraction ou de résistance-adaptation, font écho à la polarisation du débat historiographique qui s’est opérée suite aux travaux de Zeev Sternhell au début des années 1980. Sans ignorer les résultats de ces recherches, nous souhaitons ici renouveler l’interprétation des écrits de Rougemont en examinant le problème central que s’est posé l’écrivain face au national-socialisme : l’émergence d’une religion de substitution, dans un contexte de déchristianisation accélérée. Nous évoquerons tout d’abord le milieu intellectuel dans lequel Rougemont évolue au début des années 1930, en soulignant les tensions qui agitent ce milieu et qui sont exacerbées du fait de l’émergence du national-socialisme sur la scène politique allemande. Puis nous testerons la validité du concept de « religion de substitution » en montrant les conséquences, à la fois religieuses et politiques, du déclin du protestantisme en Allemagne. Nous évoquerons enfin l’une des limites de l’interprétation de Rougemont, ainsi que la manière dont son protestantisme conditionne non seulement son diagnostic du national-socialisme mais aussi la réponse qu’il lui oppose.

E kalandos hajós történetnek nem lenne különösebb történelmi jelentősége, amennyiben a kis hajó utasainak két nagy csoportja, nevezetesen a különc, félrehúzódó vallásos fundamentalisták (separatists) és a kalandvágyó, marcona idegenek (strangers) néven illetett szabad polgárok még a partraszállás előtt, november 11-én reggel 7 óra körül nem hozzák létre az újvilágbeli brit telepek és egyben az 1776-ban létrejövő Amerikai Egyesült Államok egyik legfontosabb demokratikus alapelvű dokumentumát, a híres Mayflower Szerződést (Mayflower Compact). Amint a későbbiekben látni fogjuk, a történelemnek igen hosszú árnyéka van, hiszen a historiográfia és különféle történelmi narratívák ütközése máig ható kortárs politikaformáló erővel rendelkezik még a posztmodern, identitáskereső 21. század amerikai társadalmában is. Intervention présentée lors de la journée d'étude "Mémoires honteuses. Les chrétiens européens face à leurs passés embarrassants", organisée par Laurent Ropp à l'Université du Mans, laboratoire TEMOS, le 9 novembre 2021.

En 1623, les réformés de la ville de Sommières profitent du départ de la garnison de la ville à la demande du connétable pour y inviter le duc de Rohan et réclamer aux catholiques la restitution du temple perdu lors de la reddition de la place. Un auteur pro-catholique, qui fait le récit de cet événement, met particulièrement en avant une altercation survenue entre les réformés, menés par leur ministre Chauve, et le jésuite Cavaignac. Présentant les protestants comme des fauteurs de trouble, il les dépeint comme incapable de discuter, et attachés à déformer de façon scandaleuse les arguments pourtant légitimes du père jésuite. Mais pour appuyer son propos, l’auteur affirme que leurs erreurs d’interprétation s’expliquent par le fait qu’ils se trouvent « cours de memoire à retenir ce que le pere avoit dit bien bellement ».
Une telle expression est significative : elle relève d’une conception de l’entendement héritée de la fin du Moyen Âge selon laquelle la faculté mémorielle, parce qu’elle est en mesure de regrouper et d’ordonner les informations, est la première des facultés intellectuelles, et son principal moyen de médiation avec le monde extérieur. C’est parce que les réformés ont une mémoire défectueuse, y compris pour les événements immédiats, qu’ils sont ici incapables de mener une action politique juste. Cette intervention, en se penchant non sur l’élaboration d’une mémoire du passé des guerres de religion dans la période de l’après-édit de Nantes, mais sur les mécanismes de qualification du rapport à ce passé et à la faculté mémorielle elle-même par le pouvoir royal, voudrait donc explorer une hypothèse : l’un des moyens de l’expression par le pouvoir royal d’une domination sur les réformés français, et dès lors l’un des outils de l’anéantissement largement documenté de leur faculté d’action politique partisane, résiderait dans la qualification honteuse de l’entendement des réformés, et, en particulier, par une attaque portée sur leur recours politique à la faculté mémorielle.
Pour tester cette hypothèse, nous voudrions dans un premier temps revenir sur l’expression, dans les sources, de ces défauts d’entendement et de mémoire chez les huguenots. Présente dès le début du règne de Louis XIII, l’accusation d’une mémoire défectueuse est utilisée par les agents du pouvoir royal pour critiquer la réception par les huguenots des mesures prises sur les questions de religion. Avec la hausse des tensions, et en particulier les guerres de Rohan, la question de la mémoire sélective, puis défectueuse –volontairement ou pas– des huguenots devient un ressort polémique courant, consistant à mettre en avant les moyens réformés de dire le passé, les événements choisis et la façon de les mettre en relation avec le présent, puis à les contester en affichant leurs prétendues incohérences. On montrera toutefois que cette question du rapport au passé des huguenots, en particulier en tant qu’il conduit à choisir, et surtout, à omettre certains événements est avant tout pensé comme un motif politique, que l’on retrouve du reste tant chez les royalistes que chez certains réformés eux-mêmes. Mettant en évidence qu’on se place, pour reprendre l’expression de Duplessis-Mornay « depuis une eschauguette », il permet à ceux qui le mobilisent de mettre par comparaison en avant la supériorité de leur propre construction mémorielle, permettant alors, dans le contexte de la monarchie de raison, de prétendre orienter les décisions des acteurs.
Mais le motif de la mémoire réformée défaillante devient progressivement un moyen de requalifier la place des réformés au sein du royaume, à une époque de recomposition profonde des relations politiques entre le souverain et ses sujets. En effet, on observe dans les sources huguenotes une adoption de plus en plus systématique du motif royal de la mémoire réformée défectueuse, souvent sollicitée, explicitement ou pas, par le pouvoir monarchique lui-même. Cette incapacité à comprendre les événements devient de plus en plus spontanément accolée aux réformés, et la nécessité de reconnaître publiquement cette incapacité figure de plus en plus systématiquement dans la rhétorique des sources protestantes. C’est alors que l’idée de « mémoire honteuse » prend tout son sens : en faisant de cette honte face à la défaillance réformée de la mémoire un lieu commun politique, le pouvoir royal inscrit les protestants dans une démarche perpétuelle de pénitence publique. Faisant se répéter inlassablement, et inscrivant par là-même dans la mémoire collective l’idée que les réformés, par ignorance et défaillance mémorielle, s’étaient rebellés contre leur roi, le souverain leur impose une contrition perpétuelle qui lui permet de se poser véritablement comme Louis le Juste, opérateur d’une miséricorde royale de plus en plus sacralisée. La mémoire défaillante, parce qu’elle a été objet politique, devient objet de honte ; la culpabilisation publique à laquelle elle donne lieu se substitue désormais, pour les réformés, à l’action politique.

Il saggio intende dimostrare che, subito dopo la pubblicazione, da parte di Alberico Gentili, dei De iuris interpretibus Dialogi sex (1582) e delle Lectiones et Epistolae (1583-1584) i rapporti fra Jean Hotman e il giurista di San Ginesio divennero molto difficili e burrascosi. Lo dimostrano alcune epistole scritte da Hotman ad autorevoli giuristi (ad es. Bodin), e ad alcuni umanisti (Bergmann, Payne, Cuffe, Th. Savile) contenenti critiche molto dure e severe ai Dialogi gentiliani. Malgrado ciò, e malgrado le opposizioni dei puritani, Gentili riuscirà ad ottenere la cattedra di Civil Law a Oxford.Il saggio contiene anche notizie circa il tentativo compiuto, dal Gentili, di ottenere un insegnamento a Tubinga nel 1580.

In Justine McCarthy's article about Joyce McSharry, who was separated from her mother in the Bethany Home in 1951, the solicitor David Phelan of Hayes & Sons disclaimed knowledge of an irregular 'Adoption Agreement' written by the firm (Quest for lost mother ends at graveside, News, last week).
    In the 'Agreement' Ralph Walker of Hayes & Sons, nephew of Bethany Home residential secretary Hettie Walker, was named as the 'attorney' of Joyce's mother, Emily Sheppey.
    This was so as to arrange a future legal adoption without consulting Emily.
    Derek Leinster and I wrote to Hayes & Sons between 2010-11.
    The firm also wrote the 'Adoption Agreement' which saw Derek handed to a dysfunctional family in 1945.
    In 2011 a representative volunteered without explanation that he approached a retired partner to see if he could shed light on the mystery. The person concerned is a son of the Bethany Matron. She witnessed the 1951 'Agreement' and remained as matron until the home closed in 1972.
    He too was “not aware of the existence of any records relating to Bethany Home”.
    I wrote again on July 3 with regard to the Emily Sheppey 'Agreement', indicating that this indicated ongoing engagement between the home and the firm.
    I am informed that such documentation should not be destroyed and also that, if destroyed, a record would normally be kept.
    Mr Phelan wrote to me at 8.39pm on Friday July 4th that unsuccessful "searches have been carried out", and that therefore "there is nothing more we can do".
    I suggested to Mr Phelan that "If the documents have been removed from your firm you are unlikely to find them in it".
    I also asked Mr Phelan to consider calling in the authorities if he concludes that important documentation was removed in a possibly unauthorized manner.
    Whatever he decides, Children separated from their parents in the Bethany Home would appreciate if Mr Phelan could provide them with more information.

The article refers to Protestant tradition in its Lutheran dimension and further historical development, especially the Evangelical line of thought. It sketches the basic characteristic of Protestantism, showing how denominational diversity cooperates with the fundamental confessional unity of Protestants of various proveniences. Then the author discusses the nature of civil society, focusing on its historical development from Aristotle to Habermas, Schwedler, and Michnik, and adopting a practical definition of civil society that emphasizes the activity of citizens, their understanding of responsibility for and the co-ownership of the public sphere. Finally, the article shows how certain ideas of Luther’s teaching helped in the development of civil societies in the 16th century. In particular, the focus on autonomous conscience, appreciation of civil power, education, and understanding of secular work as vocation were important in the process. The article ends with a discussion of how Evangelical Protestantism developed Luther’s ideas and adapted them in the evolving societies of the 17th and later centuries of Europe and America. According to the article, it is possible to defend the view that the ideas of Luther and later Protestants were instrumental in the development of civil societies. However, it should also be noted that several drawbacks can be identified in Protestant thought. E.g., Luther operated in a feudal, static society of the 16th century and defended its structure. On the other hand, Evangelical Protestantism is particularly prone to various types of fundamentalisms. Such groups’ literalistic interpretation and rigorous application of the Bible may result in establishing inward-oriented communities with a very eschatological perspective on reality, which do not serve or cooperate with the society in which they are planted.

This chapter explains how the sixteenth-century Protestant reformer, John Calvin, transformed the Western theology and law of sex, marriage, and family life. Understanding marriage as a divine covenant with distinct and discernible goods and goals, Calvin gave new grounds to old rules prohibiting illicit sexual unions, polygamy, adultery, prostitution, concubinage, premarital sex, and non-marital cohabitation. But Calvin also set out new teachings on the proper treatment of religious differences between spouses, sexual dysfunction, post-menopausal sex, and the right to separate and divorce for adultery or family desertion. These new grounds for old teachings and new teachings from old grounds were applied not only in formal theological tracts but also in the many statutes and cases that Calvin shaped for sixteenth-century Geneva. This chapter, introducing a multi-volume series on sex, marriage and family life in early modern Geneva, reveals the debt Western theology, jurisprudence, and political theory owes to Calvin.

Borrowed from a psychological theory, the principle of ‘separation-individuation’ refers to a developmental phase in which a subject develops sense of differentiation from her past or present origins and sense of autonomous selfhood and independency. The article suggests viewing the typology of anomist and legalist religions not as a consistent phenomenology but rather in relation to the above principle and the need to differentiate and create a religious self-identification.

Colin Kidd’s work offers an intellectual history of the ambiguous connection between Protestant theology and concepts of race since the early modern era. In the conclusion to the book, Kidd hints at the original point of departure for his research: he was driven by the “suspicion . . . that the dethroning of biblical authority was a necessary prelude to the emergence of modern racism” (271). The secular Enlightenment had opened the way to all sorts of horrors by intentionally or unintentionally
undermining the “message of universal brotherly love found in the New
Testament” (271). Yet in the course of his research, Kidd has to admit that the attractive simplicity of this hypothesis did not stand up to the pressure of the evidence. Rather than a quasi-Hegelian schema then, The Forging of Races offers a history of “illogical developments” (271). Kidd’s analysis demonstrates how different strains of Protestant theology both obstructed and enabled racial thought. He takes very seriously
the antiracist implications of the Christian doctrine of monogenesis, that is, the insistence on the essential equality and community of mankind derived from the belief in the divine creation of mankind from a single origin. But he also notes that the ambiguities of biblical exegesis generated contradictory interpretations, which in turn served as a crucible for racial thought. He suggests that lingering questions about the narrative of Genesis raised the possibility of multiple acts of creation—in short, the polygenesis of different races. These two opposing tendencies provide The Forging of Races with its fundamental drama and critical impetus.

The main theme of this study consists in questioning, from the Polynesian Protestant field, the connection between the transformation of the church institution and the transformation of men-women relations in parish. The institutionalization of women’s activities initiated during the 1980’s by pastor’s wives and the acceptance of woman pastorate in 1995 show two distinct – and sometimes conflicting – processes increasing the participation of women in the church life. Before women became deacons or pastors, the church has been a place of socialization appreciated by women who have organized places and times for women only.
The accession of women to pastoral ministry goes with a professionalization of ministries characterized by a priority given to the theological training of the future pastors, the creation of specialized non-parish ministries and the separation between private life and professional life. But while the relations within the parish are considered in terms of parental relations (the pastor is a parent who should facilitate the spiritual growth of his parishioners), the mobilization of the private life, i.e. the use of the pastor’s family as an example, does not work for a woman pastor as it does for a man pastor.

Issue d'une grande famille de tradition protestante de Saint-Félix de Sorgues (son père Pierre TOURNIER, fut maire de Saint-Félix), Benjamin naquit le 21 janvier 1826 dans la grande maison familiale située proche de l'église. Il se tourna très tôt vers la religion et comme beaucoup de protestants de cette époque partit en Suisse où il fut admis à l'université de Genève en 1846. Quelques années plus tard, il soutiendra une thèse devant la Faculté de théologie protestante de Montauban pour obtenir le grade de bachelier en théologie en 1851. La même année, il épousera Adrienne Élisabeth Esther BREITTMAYER, rencontré à Genève pendant ses dernières années d'études. Il fit ensuite plusieurs suffragances 1 principalement en Suisse et à Grenoble, puis fut nommé pasteur dans les Hautes-Alpes de 1856 à 1865, à Saint-Laurent-du-Cros précisément, dont il améliora le presbytère. Il en fit bâtir un nouveau à Pierregrosse en Queyras de 1860 à 1862, année où il devint président du consistoire d'Orpierre. Mais c'est surtout à la vallée de Freissinières qu'il se donna entièrement. Ses avis éclairèrent le Comité protestant de Lyon qui oeuvrait au développement des vallées, en aidant notamment à la création d'une société coopérative. Convaincu qu'un grand nombre d'habitants de ce pays déshérité, ne pourraient plus y vivre, il contribua largement à l'installation d'une douzaine de familles aux Trois-Marabouts près d'Oran en Algérie. Vers 1865, il se retira à Pressy-Vandoeuvre proche de Genève (aujourd'hui « maisons Mainou 2 »), où il continua à s'occuper d'actions de bienfaisance et d'évangélisation, mais consacra la majorité de son temps à ses grandes passions : la montagne et l'archéologie. Il fit de fréquents voyages dans la vallée de Freissinières et en Vallouise où il entreprit de nombreuses fouilles. Membre du Club alpin français, il devint un pionnier de l'archéologie moderne dans les Hautes-Alpes et fut un des membres fondateur de la Société d'Études des Hautes-Alpes à partir de 1883. Il mena aussi des campagnes de fouilles dans les palafittes 3 des lacs de la Suisse et en Algérie. Il écrivit plusieurs ouvrages très descriptif sur la montagne, ainsi que sur l'alpinisme dont il fut l'un des précurseurs et sur la zoologie, domaine dans lequel il fut d'ailleurs membre actif de la société protectrice d'animaux de Genève. Il excellait dans le dessin à la plume illustrant souvent ses écrits (voir un exemple page suivante). D'autres ouvrages, liés à sa fonction de pasteur et à la théologie protestante, viennent compléter une bibliographie riche et variée. (voir partie bibliographie) Il passa aussi de longs séjours aveyronnais dans sa famille natale à Saint-Félix de Sorgues, périodes pendant lesquelles il fit des fouilles de quelques tumuli et dolmens, dont ceux de Mascourbe. En 1903, il légua ses collections, d'une grande valeur scientifique selon les spécialistes, au musée départemental de Gap pour la majeure partie, mais aussi au musée des Beaux-Arts de Genève et à celui de Marseille. Il est cité encore récemment en tant que pionnier de l'archéologie dans deux volumes de la collection de référence « Carte archéologique de la Gaule » : Alpes-de-Haute-Provence et Hautes Alpes. A partir de 1890, il ne résida quasiment plus à Genève, car il participa avec la « Société de Colonisation Coligny 4 » à l'installation des protestants des Hautes-Alpes en Algérie, et plus précisément à Aïn-Tolba, appelé Guiard pendant une période. Il fut leur pasteur jusqu'en 1898. Il décède à Guiard en 1904, à l'âge de 78ans. Religious groups can reinforce, complement, or undermine authoritarian domination. This article investigates whether high-status Protestant churches act as democratising civil society organisations by gathering hundreds of Protestants openly outside state structures to change church registration policies. In so doing, they also seek to curtail state domination over religion and, by extension, over all groups in society.

In the Haitian diaspora, as in Haiti itself, the majority of Haitians have long practiced Catholicism or Vodou. However, Protestant forms of Christianity now flourish both in Haiti and beyond. In the Bahamas, where approximately one in five people are now Haitian-born or Haitian-descended, Protestantism has become the majority religion for immigrant Haitians.

In My Soul Is in Haiti, Bertin M. Louis, Jr. has combined multi-sited ethnographic research in the United States, Haiti, and the Bahamas with a transnational framework to analyze why Protestantism has appealed to the Haitian diaspora community in the Bahamas. The volume illustrates how devout Haitian Protestant migrants use their religious identities to ground themselves in a place that is hostile to them as migrants, and it also uncovers how their religious faith ties in to their belief in the need to “save” their homeland, as they re-imagine Haiti politically and morally as a Protestant Christian nation.

This important look at transnational migration between second and third world countries shows how notions of nationalism among Haitian migrants in the Bahamas are filtered through their religious beliefs. By studying local transformations in the Haitian diaspora of the Bahamas, Louis offers a greater understanding of the spread of Protestant Christianity, both regionally and globally.

Like many early modern writers, Bradstreet attempted to accommodate the worldly to the spiritual.  The world of finance, agriculture, and genealogy are is both merged and set into conflict with the spirit in her father-poems.  The poems on marriage and motherhood sketch our further conflicts between worldly and heavenly values but reconcile these oppositions by imagining all realms and all distinctions as things transcended in the spirit.  "The Author to Her Book" disrupts this larger spiritual economy in which Bradstreet located all of her work.  The book becomes a child adrift in the world where it has a material value but owes no obligation to its mother, its only parent. Completely dissociated from the contractual bonds that originate in God the Father and that are enforced by the mother, his (re-)production can never ben redeemed and therefore will not maintain a spiritual connection to its origin.  She finally does not cast it aside as blasphemy, but sets it apart as a thing that exists in a universe parallel, if inferior, to the spiritual realm that encompasses all her other offspring.  This poem records the culmination of a secularizing trend within the poet's essentially spiritual thought, for is demonstrates how the domestic, the economic, and the theological--which Bradstreet understood as interrelated locations of the bond between parents and children--where beginning to come apart for her as separate but analogous realms.

Cílem konferenčního příspěvku bylo poukázat na příbuzenské vazby evangelických pastorů, později evangelických farářů, kteří do Čech a na Moravu po vydání Tolerančního patentu přicházeli především z Uher, aby spolu se založenými sbory budovali evangelickou církev helvetského a luterského ritu. Výjimečně s panovníkovým povolením mohli na území monarchie působit pastoři z Pruska. Pastoři narození v Čechách přicházejí na scénu až v druhé generaci, kdy aktivní evangelíci vysílají na studia do Uher své syny, aby se pak vrátili a sloužili českým a moravský sborům nebo se stali kantory. Konstituováním tolerančních sborů a tím vznik po-zic pastorů, které obsazovaly vzdělané osoby, se na našem území objevuje nová společenská a intelektuální elita, která zapadá do osvícenského prostředí své doby. Evangelické rodiny, které na našem území žily již před tolerancí, a rodiny nově příchozích pastorů, uzavíraly často mezi sebou sňatky a mnohé rodiny si mezi sebou předávaly tradici povolání, pastorské a kaza-telské služby. Některé rodiny tím pádem ještě dnes zachovávají kontinuitu od doby toleranční. Na níže uvedených příkladech třech rodin, z kterých dvě byly blízce spřízněné, zatímco ta zbývající s ostatními evangelickými rody, jsme pomocí genealogické metody sestavili po-sloupnosti a příbuzenské vazby mezi jednotlivými pastory, čímž jsme se snažili dokázat, že otázka víry a služby Bohu a člověku ve vykonávání kazatelské a pastorační činnosti byla velmi silná. Součástí textu jsou i zjednodušené rodové rozrody a jednotlivá schémata rodových větví. Data byla vyhledávána především v matrikách a dalších pomůckách, které jsou uvedeny v poznámkovém aparátu. Genealogická schémata obsahují pouze osoby pastorů, popřípadě jejich manželky, které byly dcerami jiných pastorů (modrá pole), zakladatele rodů (zelená pole) či jiná osoby (šedé a oranžové pole). Data obsažená v textu a ve schématech obsahují pouze in-formace, které byly shromážděny za účelem konference a mohou sloužit jako východisko pro další bádání, která můžeme v nejbližší době očekávat.

The authors reviewed the literature on mental health issues among clergy and other religious professionals, using electronic searches of databases of medical (Medline), nursing (CINAHL), psychology (PsycINFO), religious (ATLA), and sociological research (Sociofile). The existing research indicates the Protestant clergy report higher levels of occupational stress than Catholic priests, brothers, or sisters. Catholic sisters repeatedly reported the lowest work-related stress, whereas women rabbis reported the highest stress levels in various studies. Occupational stress appears to be a source of family stress among Protestant clergy--a factor which clergy and their spouses believe the denominational leadership should address. High levels of stress also have been found to be associated with sexual misconduct among clergy. The authors make several recommendations based on these and other findings they report in their review.
