The Drakkar was the Viking war ship, the Dromon that of the Byzantine world.  The Vikings and Byzantines collided, cooperated, fought for and against each other. 

Since the Dromon (and other galleys in the Med) was rowed standing up, perhaps a look at the Drakkar or other Viking style ship did also.

The Dromon went on as galleys up to the 1700's while the Drakkar got fat and short and became the head of long line of sailing ships.

Se pretende abordar el estudio de los graneros romanos de ámbito militar en Hispania, mediante un análisis del emplazamiento que ocupaban en el interior de los campamentos legionarios y fuertes y, especialmente, de las técnicas de construcción de los edificios. Para ello, resulta necesario presentar la información relativa a los almacenes de grano desde un punto de vista crítico, con el fin de determinar cuáles son los graneros documentados hasta la actualidad en Hispania y señalar qué edificios fueron utilizados simplemente como almacenes. Para ello, se presenta una valoración crítica de la información relativa a los horrea excavados en Hispania para, a continuación, analizar detenidamente los graneros militares de época republicana e imperial documentados hasta la actualidad.

Ce mémoire de master propose un examen des entrepôts publics en milieux urbain et militaire durant les Haut et Bas-Empire, en Gaule Belgique et Germanie inférieure. Pour cela, il a d’abord été nécessaire d’établir un catalogue de toutes les structures interprétées comme telles. Le corpus dressé a ensuite fait l’objet d’un examen des composantes architecturales, urbaines et géographiques.

This text gives some very small selection of details included in the forthcoming Caracalla: A Military Biography (as an advertisement) due to be published by Pen & Sword this year and in fact provides also a short overview of some of the unconventional strategies and tactics employed by Caracalla together with some quite new info regarding period equipment and military practices. A much fuller discussion of all things connected to military matters in its widest sense can be found in the book.

Im vergangenen Jahrzehnt konnten auf dem
Gebiet des römerzeitlichen Bregenz wesentliche
neue Erkenntnisse zur frühkaiserzeitlichen Siedlungsstruktur
gewonnen werden. Wenngleich seit
150 Jahren Grabungen im Siedlungsareal durchgeführt
werden1, ist der tatsächliche Kenntnisstand der
augusteisch-tiberischen Zeit lückenhaft geblieben.
Erst durch neue Grabungen und die Umsetzung einer
topografischen Neuaufnahme sämtlicher römerzeitlicher
Baustrukturen, die sich immerhin auf über
30 ha ausdehnten, lassen sich entsprechende Areale
verorten.

The excavations at Caerleon in the summer of 2011 were focused on the complex of monumental buildings outside the fortress of Isca. This impressive suburb extended over about 5 hectares, including some of the largest Roman buildings in Britain, and this report presents the results of the nine trenches opened across the full extent of the complex. The preliminary study of the pottery assemblage indicates the suburb could have been first constructed at about the same time as the fortress (i.e. A.D. 70s), but that the majority of the buildings would seem to have been abandoned perhaps as soon as the early-third century. They were possibly used for the disposal of rubbish, including the remains of unusually large quantities of pigs and birds, during the late Roman period after which the buildings were stripped of their stone and tile before disappearing for 1,500 years. The final discussion looks to provide possible answers to the project’s original research questions, concluding with some observations regarding the layout and architecture of the Southern Canabae and its relationship with the fortress and the legionary command in this part of Britannia.

Bei Grabungen 1898 entdeckte römische Steindenkmäler innerhalb eines Gebäudes im Gräberfeld von Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt sind der Ausgangspunt der Untersuchung. Darunter befanden sich einige Weihungen an die Göttin Herecura. Daher wurde zum einen die Herkunft und Verbreitung dieser Gottheit untersucht als auch das Phänomen der Deponierung römischer Steindenkmäler.

The article is devoted to the publication of brooches of the Avcissa type from the excavations of the Artesian site. A detailed analysis allows us to consider them as the early variants of the type, whereas and the findings themselves are most likely to be associated with the events of the Roman-Bosporan war of 44/45–49 AD.

Das Roll-up gibt eine kurze, allgemein verständliche Einführung zu den beiden römischen Schiffswracks aus der Zeit um 100 n. Chr., die 1986 in Oberstimm (Markt Manching) entdeckt und 1994 vollständig geborgen wurden. Seit 2006 bilden die Wracks Highlights der Dauerausstellung im kelten römer museum manching. +++ Das Roll-up wurde im Rahmen des Kooperationsprojektes »Die Rückkehr des Römerschiffs« erstellt, an dem das kelten römer museum manching, die Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg und weitere Institutionen beteiligt waren. Im Juli und August 2018 begab sich ein 1:1-Nachbau des Oberstimmer Schiffswracks 2 entlang der Donau auf große Tour: die Fridericiana Alexandrina Navis (kurz F.A.N.). Sie bot interessierten Besuchern die einzigartige Gelegenheit, sich selbst in die Riemen zu legen und damit Geschichte hautnah zu erleben.

Dit artikel is tot stand gekomen als een samenvatting van mijn master thesis. Het bevat een overzicht van de fibulae die gevonden zijn in de zuidwest hoek van het castellum van Oudenburg (opgraving Oudenburg-Spegelaere). Deze vondsten worden in een breder kader geplaatst door een vergelijkende studie. Bovendien wordt er specifiek ingegaan op de kruisboogfibulae (drieknoppen) aangetroffen in zowel het fort als het grafveld (opgravingen Mertens).

Anlässlich des 15-jährigen Bestehens des kelten römer museums manching startete am 2. Juni 2021 das Quiz »Professor von Eulenschnurz – Jäger des verworrenen Quatsches«. Die Besucherinnen und Besucher hatten Gelgenheit, bis zum 12. September 2021 am humoristischen Suchspiel teilzunehmen. +++ Hintergrund war ein Besuch des fiktiven Professors von Eulenschnurz (Bayerische Fernuniversität Hintertupfing), der die Dauerausstellung des Manchinger Museums gehörig auf den Kopf stellte – mit wahnwitzigen Ergebnissen! Das Quiz präsentierte acht Eulenschnurzsche Theorien zu Funden der Kelten- und Römerzeit aus Manching und Oberstimm, von einer gut belegten Familienpizza bis hin zu einem abgefahrenen Muped-Lenker. Aufgabe der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer war es, die beschriebenen Objekte im Museum zu finden und ihre tatsächlichen Funktionen zu erraten. +++ Das Suchspiel lag in Form eines liebevoll illustrierten Heftes vor und richtete sich an Menschen ab 10 Jahren. Zu gewinnen waren ökologisch und fair produzierte T-Shirts, Turnbeutel und Tragetaschen, auf denen die keltischen Achsnägel mit Raubvogelköpfen aus dem Oppidum von Manching abgebildet sind.

Книга посвящена эволюции римского декорированного доспеха в эпоху принципата. Это первое масштабное исследование римских доспехов на русском языке, являющееся плодом двадцатилетних изысканий автора.
      Изучение античного оружия и его декора в свете современных подходов не может ограничиваться только рассмотрением эволюции самого комплекса вооружения, но предполагает обращение к таким актуальным общеисторическим вопросам, как древние технологии, кросс-культурные коммуникации, ценностные представления, идеология и религия военнослужащих. Несмотря на довольно значительное количество специальных работ, посвящённых этой категории вооружения, исследования сосредоточены на узкой группе предметов, которые выделяются как применявшиеся только на парадах и в конных упражнениях. Прочее декорированное римское вооружение остаётся вне пристального внимания исследователей, в силу чего декор римского доспеха не рассматривается как целостная семантическая система, связанная с функциональным предназначением предметов вооружения и отражающая идеологию и ценностные представления римских военных. Однако только такое изучение римского декорированного доспеха позволяет уточнить хронологию археологических памятников, провести детальное сравнение сохранившихся артефактов с иконографическими материалами и данными письменных источников, выявить взаимодействие и взаимовлияние различных этнокультурных традиций в истории Римской державы.
      На основе изучения археологических находок выявлена семантика декора доспехов и её связь с религиозно-идеологическими аспектами мировоззрения римских военнослужащих, а также рассмотрены технологические аспекты производства предметов декорированного вооружения.
      Все римские декорированные доспехи эпохи принципата следует рассматривать в комплексе, поскольку большая часть всего защитного вооружения была богато украшена, а также имела общий круг сюжетов, изображавшихся на нём, вне зависимости от его назначения.
      Декор доспехов эпохи принципата был связан с религиозным мировоззрением римских военнослужащих. Его иконографический мир был крайне консервативен и мало изменялся на протяжении I–III вв. н. э. Его консервативность подтверждается устойчивостью образов и стилистикой их воплощения на сохранившихся декорированных доспехах, созданных в течение эпохи принципата. Книга снабжена множеством цветных иллюстраций, а также иллюстрированным каталогом находок, в котором учтены все известные находки римских декорированных доспехов на начало 2018 г.

The paper is dedicated to a new beneficiary inscription from the Roman province of Dalmatia found in Kifino Selo, near Nevesinje in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska). It is executed on the front of a limestone altar with a widened and profiled base. The upper part is modelled in a similar way with a triangular gable with floral decoration and lateral acroteriae. The dedication to Jupiter the Best and the Greatest was offered by a Roman consular beneficiary (beneficiarii consularis) at the time of his active military service in the Legion I Adiutrix. The altar was probably erected in a temple, shrine or at a beneficiary station near the Roman road leading from Nevesinjsko polje towards Narona and the Adriatic coast to the south or northwest, in the depths of the provincial territory. Based on the paleographic and stylistic features, the inscription can be dated to the end of 2nd and the 3rd century AD.

Caracalla. A Military Biography is now available as a hardcover, Kindle and e-book an from the website of its publisher Pen & Sword Publishing and from most of the major booksellers.  It is not only the first published biography in English of this remarkable individual, but also the first that reassess the evidence from the point of view of military history.

Campaigns of Germanicus, AD 13-16 describes briefly the campaigns, joint and combined ops., tactics, strategy, foreign policy, espionage, intelligence gathering, and strategy between ca. 60 BC and AD 150 with particular focus on Germanicus' campaigns.

Roman roads are the backbone of British history. This book examines the questions that never seem to be asked about Roman roads. Whilst new routes are traced and theories propounded about how they were surveyed, the important issues like Why? and When? have been neglected. How does an animal track turn into a major military highway? Were there any roads in the prehistoric period? How the Romans built their roads is assessed using comparative information (such as the detailed 18th-century records of Highland military road construction). The way the system functioned is examined and most particularly the often-ignored point of how it developed and changed in the Roman period. Change is a theme pursued for the early medieval period, as the importance of some parts of the system ensured their continuation whilst others were abandoned. What processes preserved a road, and what made it decay? Finally the book looks at the legacy of Roman roads now and the way in which they have been viewed and studied in recent times is considered.
An accompanying website provides links to related material (online sources of information and map resources) together with access to a Google Earth map derived from Margary’s description of the roads of Britain.

This article presents a fragmentary and hitherto unpublished inscribed funerary stele, which was reused in Venice as an architectural spolium and has recently come to light. The text, written in Latin, is very likely to be the epitaph for a legionary, whose name is unknown since it occupied the part of the inscription that has not survived. Archaeological data and textual analysis suggest that the inscribed stone dates to the 1st - early 2nd centuries AD and probably came to Venice from the Eastern shores of the Adriatic. It also seems likely that the legionary mentioned in the fragmentary text was a native of Narbonese Gaul who died in Dalmatia or in Aquileia. The inscription can perhaps be associated with another funerary stele (CIL V 2162), which was reused in the base of the nearby San Vidal bell-tower.
