Scythians

Аннотация. Статья посвящена проблеме внутренних скифских конфликтов. Рассматривается археологический материал, включающий перечень скифских северочерноморских погребений с фиксируемыми «военными» травмами и ранениями погребенных, случаи замены и вторичного использования ритуальных каменных скифских изваяний, случаи ограбления могил соплеменниками и свидетельства письменных источников. Abstract. The author considers the problem of Scythians' internal conflicts. Analysing both written evidence and the archaeological material, she lists North Pontic Scythian graves with arguably " war " traumas of the buried men, as well as the cases when Scythian ritual stone sculptures were replaced or reused or when graves were plundered by fellow tribesmen.

РУЧКА АНТИЧНОГО ЗЕРКАЛА БОРИСФЕНИТСКОГО ТИПА .
Цель настоящего сообщения - введение в научный оборот редкого предмета эпохи архаики, найденного в Белгородской области. Публикуемая находка ручки бронзового зеркала может существенно дополнить знания о путях распространения греческих импортов в скифском мире, свидетельствующих о реальных контактах греческих колонистов с миром кочевых народов.

Скифский звериный стиль повсеместно распространен на обширной территории Евразии. Являясь одним из основных элементов скифской триады, он неустанно привлекает внимание
исследователей. В работе рассматриваются предметы снаряжения коня скифского времени лесостепного Дона, исполненные в типичной стилистике того времени.

У статті вводяться до наукового обігу археологічні матеріали, виявлені в 2018 р. на території с. Студенець Канівського р-ну Черкаської обл. При прокопуванні траншеї водогону по вулиці Бучацькій випадково натрапили на археологічний об’єкт скіфського часу — скупчення керамічних посудин. Ця знахідка, а також поверхневі збори вказують на існування тут поселення доби раннього заліза.

In order to enter into a trance, shamans use different means. One of them is intoxication and hallucination with the help of drugs and toxins. The use of drugs in religious rituals was known in Scythian culture as it was described in the work of Herodotus, where- during the cleansing ceremonies- the Scythians sat in a small bath-tent, threw cannabis seeds on burning hot stones and inhaled the steam of this drug. After this procedure, they become elated and shout for joy. We find direct analogies to the steam bath-tent, with half-burned cannabis seeds in the Second Pazyryk burial mound in Altay, belonging to the Siberian Scythian. Another method of entering into a hallucinatory state would be the use of strong toxins, such as poisonous mushrooms – Amanita Muscaria. Some unique replicas of this mushroom, made from an animal bone, were found in burial mounds of the Khodzhaly-Kedabek culture in Azerbaijan and Timber-grave culture of Bashkortostan. Even though these cultures were using drugs and toxins it is difficult to establish if they practiced shamanism. In this paper the author offers a methodology for determining if shamanism was practiced in an archaeological culture. The methodology is based on the comparative (interdisciplinary) research of written sources, archaeology, ethnography and mythology. Different objects and ornaments from graves, construction materials, burial stratification and rituals are examined and compared with ethnographic materials and ancient historical sources.

Based on existing classifications of the horse-bits and cheek-pieces of the North Caucasus and Eastern Europe, the paper outlines a classification of bronze cheek-pieces made of a twisted core and non-bonding three-hole cheek-pieces from Azerbaijan. Burials where objects under the study originate from are dated back to the second half of the 8 th and the 7 th centuries BC. Most of the studied bits with non-bonding three-hole cheek-pieces of Azerbaijan come from the burial grounds where Scythian type objects were discovered or where a burial rite has analogies to those in the forest-steppe on the right bank of the Dnipro River. This data indicates the connection of the studied artifacts with the cultures of the Cimmerians and the Scythians.

"Die Publikation zu den Drei-Brüder-Kurganen untersucht drei Grabhügel, die in spätklassischfrühhellenistischer Zeit auf der Krim, ganz im Osten der Kertscher Halbinsel, errichtet wurden und deren Fundgebiet in der Antike zum Territorium des Bosporanischen Reiches gehörte. Die drei Grabhügel wurden vom Kertscher Museum in den 1960er Jahren im Rahmen archäologischer Notgrabungen untersucht. Auf der Basis einer vollständigen Vorlage aller in den Kurganen angetroffenen Funde und Befunde werden ihre
Charakteristika vergleichend mit bosporanischen sowie ausgewählten weiteren nordpontischen Nekropolenkontexten der räumlich benachbarten Griechenstädte und des skythischen Gebietes analysiert."

On having referred to the ancient arts of the divination, the prediction or the knowledge of the fortune we remember the famous oracle of Delphi or the well-known sibylline books. Nevertheless in that epoch numerous cultures were provided with rituals, places of worship, mystic centers and personages who were devoting themselves to these tasks with big reputation and not minor benefits. Between these controversial figures, the classic sources mention briefly the existence of a few important personages who were a part of the scythia culture and who were famous for revealing the fortune and the future to whom they wanted to know his future. It is a question of the acquaintances as aneraeans, priests or prophets that, by means of arcane arts they were offering his services and who attracted attention of the Greeks for his aspect and effeminate clothing that has led to thinking that it was a question of eunuch. Legends and myths on his origin have been described without very much detail and for this motive scarcely we know nothing on a caste which importance between the nomads of the steppes provided to them a high position and the social recognition. It is told that long ago, warriors scythians profaned the temple of Aphrodite Urania in Ascalon, receiving the anger of the goddess but it provided to them the power of the prediction. In this exhibition we will explain to these fortune-tellers whose talent exceeded the mistrust that his appearance was reflecting between the Greeks.

Този доклад е продължение (втора част) на лекцията озаглавена “Причерноморието – люлка на европейската цивилизация и Тракия като арийска сърцевина”, изнесена пред Международната научна конференция “Древна Тракия – сакрално и профанно. България, Балканите и Черноморската област”, Пловдив, 2019. Докато в първата част вниманието е фокусирано върху аргументи в полза на тезата за депресията, която днес е леглото на Черно море, като не само подслон за преживяване, но и “люлка” за създаване на генетичен резервоар благоприятстващ развитие на подслонената общност, втората част разглежда доказателствата за твърдението, че тук се развива бъдещата хронологически първа за човечеството цивилизация – тази на Арите (Арийците), които по-късно биват наричани също и Пеласги, Траки, Кимери, Илири и пр. Представени са няколко образци на урбанизирани общности на средна възраст около 7000 години, тоест, предхождащи всички други известни на човечеството. Представени са и оцелели във времето образци на протописменост, разпръснати преимуществено из Арийския континуум на Блаканите, тоест в ареала на Траките. В заключение е публикуван апел към всички – в научните среди, както и в кръговете на местния патриотизъм, за употреба на точна терминология, без ограниченията на политическата коректност и каквито и да е други съображения отвъд обективната реалност, за да се спрат спекулациите с нашето историческо и културно наследство.

Desde Escitia a la Península Ibérica, de la Edad de Bronce -si no antes- a los primeros siglos de nuestra Era, diversos seres antropomorfos, humanos o mitológicos, han sido representados luchando contra el grifo -id est, la grifomaquia- a lo largo de milenios y kilómetros con distintos significados, muchos de los cuales aún suponen una incógnita para la arqueología...

The article discusses how eastern chronological benchmarks can contribute to the absolute chronology of archaic Scythia. Given the dates of the fall of Urartu (ca. 640 BC) and the Rysaikino inscription (the late 8th century BC), the early Scythian chronology shows up as follows: the Scythians appeared in the North Caucasus as early as in the mid-8th century BC; they invaded Transcaucasia and the north-western Iran in the late 8th century BC; articles executed in the Scythian animal style and weapons from the destroyed centres of Urartu should be dated to the mid-7th century BC at the latest.

Раскопки многочисленных курганов VIII—III вв. до н.э. в Южной Сибири позволили на высоком
уровне решать вопросы хронологии и этнокультурной истории восточной части скифо-
сибирского мира, показали ее самобытность и значимость для скифской культуры в целом. Крупным
достижением сибирской археологии можно считать работу по синхронизации богатейших комплексов
Тувы (Аржан, Аржан-2 и др.) и Горного Алтая (Пазырык) с памятниками юга Восточной
Европы (Грязнов, 3980; 1983; и др.), вычленение «культурно-хронологических пластов» (Марсадолов,
2004). До этого западные и восточные культуры, как правило, рассматривались изолировано
друг от друга, тогда как этот подход в перспективе дает возможность соотнести с «общескифской
» хронологией и историей материалы конкретных этнокультурных образований скифоидного
облика в зоне степи и лесостепи Евразии. В раинескифское время переброшенный с востока на
запад мост имеет очень мало надежных опор на промежуточных территориях. Для последующего
времени (середина VI - первая половина V в. до н.э.) в Нижнем Поволжье и Южном Урале уже
выявляется значительная группа памятников, синхронных алтайским и тувинским. Однако до
недавнего времени на разделявшем Горный Алтай и Южный Урал отрезке в 1500 км не имелось
достаточно представительных памятников этого времени. Соответственно, большое значение приобретают
памятники каменской культуры Верхнего Приобья. Они являются промежуточным звеном
между культурами указанных восточных и западных территорий.
Уже на первом этапе подготовки монографии было установлено, что ранняя (северная) группа
курганов относится не к IV—III вв. до н. э., а примерно к концу VI-V вв. до н.э. (Уманский, Шульга,
1999, с. 60). В ходе последующего всестороннего анализа материалов Рогозихи-1, рассматриваемых
на фоне сбруйных комплексов Южной Сибири, Казахстана и Южного Урала VI-V вв. до н.э.,
с учетом сопутствующего инвентаря, особенностей звериного стиля и погребального обряда,
авторы пришли к выводу, что курганы северной группы сооружались во второй половине VI -
первой половине V в. до н.э. С опорой на рогозихинский коплекс в каменской культуре были
выделены захоронения раннего этапа, что позволило синхронизировать эту группу с раннепазы-
рыкскими и «савроматскими» (раннепрохоровскими), а также наметить основные особенности
формирования каменской культуры, происходившего путем постепенной трансформации погребальной
обрядности раннескифского времени.
В монографии впервые подробно описаны, проанализированы и датированы ранее почти не
известные на этой территории сбруйные наборы верховой лошади, существенно отличающиеся
от пазырыкских и имеющие свою линию развития.
Важные выводы были получены по казалось бы немногочисленным образцам звериного стиля,
также имеющего свои, отличные от пазырыкских, корни и формировавшегося на стыке пазырыкской,
сакской и южноуральской традиций. Вполне вероятно, территория каменской культуры была
одним из центров формирования еще не изученного, существовавшего в середине VI-IV вв. до
н.э. особого локального варианта скифо-сибирского звериного стиля.
Новую страницу в истории изучения связей с сакским миром и более южными территориями
открывают изготавливавшиеся, по-видимому, в Индии или Бактрии «восточные» зеркала, в том
числе самое яркое из них зеркало-гюгремушка с изображением религиозно-мифологической сцены.

Заключение
скими памятниками кавказского региона находят оригинальные модели роговых ножен. Их исследование
позволило несколько продвинуться в понимании процесса сложения ножен ирано-алтайского
типа Горного Алтая, а также по-новому взглянуть на семантику и иконографию классических
образов свернувшегося или S-видного кошачьего хищника и терзаемого копытного.
Значимые наблюдения были сделаны на массовом материале из Рогозихи-1 по планировке могил
под курганными насыпями, их размерам и парным могилам, имеющим значение как для каменской,
так и для других культур скифского времени с многомогильными курганами.
Публикация материалов могильника Рогозиха-1 существенно дополняет имеющуюся источни-
ковую базу, позволяет по-иному взглянуть на происходившие здесь в VT-IV вв. до н.э. этнокультурные
процессы, и выводит каменскую культуру Верхнего Приобья на сопоставимый уровень
с культурами Саяно-Алтая, Южного Урала и сакского мира.

The iconography of the Horus cippus, an amulet popular in Egypt from the late Third Intermediate Period to Roman times (8th century BCE - 2nd century CE), is unexpectedly recapitulated in bronze “goddess plaques” of the 7-8th centuries CE made by Permian peoples – Finno-Ugric groups from the Ural region of northern Eurasia. The likely explanation is that both templates are descendants of the widely-diffused “Master of Animals” motif, which originated in Mesopotamia during the Ubaid period (6-5th millennium BCE). Transfer of the Master/Mistress of Animals motif  from the Near East to the Ural region probably occurred via the Scythians of the 1st millennium BCE.

Herodots skythische Etymologien der Völkernamen ’Αριμασποί und Οἰόρπατα sind hinfällig (‚einäugig‘ = ἄριμα ‚eins‘ + σποῦ ‚Auge‘ bzw. ‚männertötend‘ = οἰόρ ‚Mann‘ + πατά ‚töten‘). Es werden im Aufsatz dafür neue skythische Erklärungen vorgeschlagen (*arjataspāh ‚pferdereich‘ bzw. *aiwawarakāta ‚einbrüstig‘). Es wird sich außerdem herausstellen, dass der Völkername Ἀμαζόνες, der bisher keine befriedigende Erklärung gefunden hat, von Herodots Diskussion erläutert werden mag (*amajanah ‚Manneskraft zerstörend‘). Die Hypothese einer iranischen Herkunft dieser Namen führt zur Frage, zu welcher Zeit die Entlehnungen erfolgt sind. Schließlich geht der Aufsatz auch auf die Bedeutung der sprachlichen Argumente in Herodots Darstellung ein.

In this study, two of the most important Sabine deities, Sabus and Vacuna, are considered. Their names are analysed and derived from eponyms which are characteristic of Proto-Scythian global culture. Moreover, the ethnogesesis of the sabine people is investigated in order to understand the origin of the deities, their cults, and their names. To this aim, the peopling of ancient Central Italy is studied by considering the ancient sources and the results of a diffusion model based on the time and space distributions of ancient and current geographical names and ethnonyms. The migrations to Italy of peoples contributing to the population of Central Italy are then distinguished and changes in people names are demonstrated. On the basis of ethnogenesis of the Sabine people, the customs related by ancient sources are explained and the relationships between the Sabine eponymous deities and those of other Italic peoples are highlighted. In particular, the relatioships with Feronia and Bellona goddesses are analyzed. These deities are recognized as the eponymous goddesses of some Proto-Etruscan tribes.

Neste Livro IV-Melpômene, Heródoto narra a expansão do Império Persa na Ásia, registra detalhes sobre os preparativos da expedição militar de Dario, e trata dos episódios que marcaram as campanhas militares de Dario contra a Cítia e contra a Líbia. Este relato não se limita à descrição dos armamentos e das batalhas. Heródoto descreve os costumes e os hábitos dos povos citas e dos líbios, centrando-se em suas práticas cotidianas: suas atividades e meios de subsistência. Registra ainda como citas e líbios vivenciavam suas religiões e religiosidades, sem deixar de lado as características singulares de cada povo. A descrição geográfica dos territórios dos citas e dos líbios relata como esses povos interagiam com seu espaço. Embora Heródoto descreva as expedições militares do rei Dario contra citas e líbios, a Cítia permanece a temática principal desta obra, que se constitui na maior e mais detalhada narrativa conhecida sobre o povo cita.

This article will focus on certain parallels between the descriptions of Scythians and Spartans in Herodotos. Even though there are fundamental differences between the two ethnic groups’ ways of life (nomadism vs. sedentarianism), and they occupy divergent positions in relation to the writers themselves (Barbarian vs. Hellenic), they are both representatives of the other. They are situated more or less in the same position in the scheme of classical ethnography, and certain attitudes considered typical of unspoiled man are attributed indiscriminately to both. Furthermore, Dorian culture allegedly kept certain “primitive” (i.e., “tribal”) features in its social organisation that may be related to similar elements in Scythian culture.

The functioning of the Scythian enclave on Polish lands can be seen as a cultural phenomenon. The site should be treated as an integral part of the military system of forest-steppe Scythia. This is evidenced by a number of formal features related to the fortified settlement itself, such as its natural defensive qualities, location in an upland area or location, enabling control of the immediate surroundings. At the same time, it is a central point in relation to neighbouring open settlements together forming the so-called Chotyniec agglomeration. It is also worth mentioning archaeological sources, especially military accessories, which fit very well into the cultural canons of Eastern European warriors.

This book is the extended and English version of one of my published books, Kültür Tarihi Açısından İskit-Türk Aynılığı (Selenge, Istanbul 2017, Turkish). My goal is to reach to people in the world who are interested in Scythian culture and raise the awareness of them in context of the book title.

The present article attempts to transcode the “animal” status of those buried in the first monumental burial ground of the Scythians in the Lower Dnieper region — the famous Solokha barrow. Solokha’s materials are seen as an optimal case for such kind of study. On the one hand, two burials from different periods and of different statuses were found underneath the mound. On the other hand, each of the burials contained artefacts with depictions of wild and mythological predators, which makes it possible to correlate the statuses of the buried with the depictions of beasts. Based on the analysis of the funeral contexts in Solokha, and taking into account the semantics of animal styles, it is possible to conclude that the lateral grave belonged to a legitimate king of the Scythians (conventionally, “Oktamasades”) whose status was clearly marked by feline-shaped predators, and the central one — to a “prince” (conventionally, “Orikos”) who died at a young age and forever remained on the primary, “wolf” stage of military initiation.

The Ossetian Nartiada contains a unique feature: the main heroes use an argot warrior language to communicate during battles and conflicts in order to keep the meaning of their dialogues in secret. In that way they obtain a strategic advantage over their enemies. Three such examples are analyzed and compared with real Scythian stratagems described in antique literary sources.
