Telecommunications

In recent years, several New England projects have promoted professional development and curriculum design in optics and photonics. Funded in part by the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF), these projects have prepared middle and high school teachers, college faculty and career counselors from more than 100 New England institutions to introduce fiber optics, telecommunications and photonics technology education. Four of these projects will be discussed here: (1) The New England Board of Higher Education's (NEBHE) Fiber Optics Technology Education Project, (FOTEP) was designed to teach fiber optics theory and to provide laboratory experiences at the secondary and postsecondary levels. (2) Springfield Technical Community College's Northeast Center for Telecommunications Technologies (NCTT) is developing curricula and instructional materials in lightwave, networking and wireless telecommunications technologies. (3) The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics project ComTech developed a 12-week, hands-on curriculum and teaching strategies for middle and high school science and technology teachers in telecommunications and focused on optical communication (fiber optics). (4) NEBHE's project PHOTON is preparing middle, secondary and postsecondary instructors to introduce theory and laboratory experiences in photonics, including geometric and wave optics as well as principles of lasers and photonics applications.

O gerenciamento de ativos desempenha um papel cada vez mais importante no cenário econômico das organizações uma vez que seu principal objetivo é extrair valor dos ativos e garantir a competitividade da organização. O setor de logística de uma empresa tem sua importância na gestão de informações relevantes ao processo de planejamento, execução e controle do fluxo e armazenagem de produtos. Assim, o gerenciamento de ativos dentro do setor logístico é de extrema importância para garantir a otimização do processo através do uso de ferramentas, técnicas, normas e tecnologias que garantirão o sucesso e melhoria contínua das atividades. Este artigo tem como objetivo realizar comparativos entre o setor logístico e de telecomunicações, dentre estes, as tecnologias utilizadas e as maiores diferenças existentes entre eles. Os resultados mostram que é evidente a necessidade das organizações caminharem, cada vez mais, para um cenário onde o gerenciamento de ativos aliado à utilização da tecnologia tenha um papel mais participativo nos resultados e objetivos estratégicos.

Asset management plays an increasingly important role in the economic scenario of organizations since its main objective is to extract value from assets and ensure the organization's competitiveness. The logistics sector of a company has its importance in the management of information relevant to the process of planning, execution and control of the flow and storage of products. Thus, asset management within the logistics sector is extremely important to ensure the optimization of the process through the use of tools, techniques, standards and technologies that will ensure the success and continuous improvement of activities. This article aims to make comparisons between the logistics and telecommunications sector, among them, the technologies used and the biggest differences between them. The results show that the need for organizations to move more and more towards a scenario where asset management combined with the use of technology has a more participatory role in the results and strategic objectives is evident.

Recently, several theoretical papers have derived relationships for fiber-optic transmission system performance in terms of associated physical layer parameters. At the same time, a large number of detailed experiments have been and continue being performed that demonstrate increasing capacities and unregenerated reach. We use this wealth of experimental data to validate the aforementioned relationships, and to propose a set of simple scaling rules for performance. We find that, despite substantial differences in experimental configurations, overall performance in terms of spectral efficiency and unregenerated reach is well explained by scaling rules. These scaling rules will be useful to carriers seeking to understand what they should expect to see in terms of network performance using deployed or easily accessible technology, which may be radically different from hero experiment results. The current study investigated forms of technology (phone calls, texts, email and Facebook) for maintaining contact with homeless youth over baseline, 1-week, 6-week, and 3-month follow-up interviews. The study combined quantitative tracking of youths’ response patterns and open-ended interviews regarding youths’ preferred methods of communication. Results indicate that maintaining communication with homeless youth requires persistence, including frequent contact attempts over several days. Cell phone contacts (calls or texts) were most successful in communicating with youth, with e-mail and Facebook messaging useful when phones were lost or stolen. Youth who maintained contact were strikingly similar to youth who discontinued contact.

We present a model of energy consumption in IP networks. Using this model, we identify energy ldquohotspotsrdquo and estimate how energy consumption will grow with increasing network capacity. Todaypsilas Internet uses less than 1% of the available electricity supply. However, network energy consumption could grow substantially as access rates increase.

The increasing demand of World Wide Web raises the need of predicting the user's web page request. The most widely used approach to predict the web pages is the pattern discovery process of Web usage mining. This process involves inevitability of many techniques like Markov model, association rules and clustering. Fuzzy theory with different techniques has been introduced for the better results. Our focus is on Markov models. This paper is introducing the vague Rules with Markov models for more accuracy using the vague set theory.

The distribution of Universal Basic Telecommunications and Social Services will minimize the gap in communication and technology access which will improve the quality of life of the people in remote areas and bring about the equality and fairness in standard of living for all citizens both in the city and the remote areas. In The goal is to promote and improve knowledge and skill which will benefit to the public for the appropriated and efficient access to the basic telecommunications services. This paper aims to describe how the NBTC develop policy and strategy to achieve the objective of the NBTC's Notification Regarding Plan on Universal Basic Telecommunications Services and Social Services (B.E. 2555-2559) on research and development. The paper also demonstrates the organization structure and key management issues.

Artykuł będący popularnie ujętym i skróconym wykładem inauguracyjnym, jaki wygłosił autor podczas rozpoczęcia roku akademickiego 2005/06 w AGH - przedstawia drogę, jaką przebyła nauka o elektryczności od prostych doświadczeń z elektrostatycznym oddziaływaniem potartych obiektów dielektrycznych (np. bursztynu) poprzez stworzenie ogniw i baterii elektrochemicznych, aż do używanych obecnie prądnic. Jednym z efektów rozwoju wiedzy o elektryczności było powstanie elektroniki, która - jak napisano w tytule - zelektryzowała także obszar kultury.

La expansión de las TIC (Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones) en todos los ámbitos y niveles de nuestra sociedad se ha producido, desde hace varias décadas, a gran velocidad y es un proceso imparable pues van apareciendo nuevos elementos tecnológicos y aplicaciones que motivan a los usuarios, a las empresas e instituciones a hacer uso de ellos, descartando los anteriores –aunque convivan durante algún tiempo–, bien por su obsolescencia, o por la falta de prestaciones que los hacen inadecuados para satisfacer los mayores requerimientos actuales.

During the last decades, Steganography has found many applications. Many steganographic systems have been developed and used in various areas, e.g., in digital assets (DRM), Telecommunications, Medicine etc. In this paper, we prove that the set CF, which is a union of a certain set of Fibonacci numbers and a certain set of Catalan numbers, satisfies conditions, similar to those of Zeckendorf's Theorem. Therefore, it can be used for the encoding of data. Using this result, we propose a method that improves the Fibonacci data hiding technique.
