Urban archaeology

In 2013, the Missouri Department of Transportation began conducting archaeological investigations prior to proposed reconstruction of the I-64/I-55 interchange at the end of the Poplar Street Bridge in downtown St. Louis. The project, located immediately south of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the Gateway Arch, is situated within the confines of what was historically the old French village of St. Louis. Excavation not only identified features associated with the mid-nineteenth century occupation of the area, but also remnants of at least two of the original French homes built during the third quarter of the eighteenth century. Results of the 2013 and 2014 field seasons produced somewhat surprising results, suggesting that more of the original occupation of the area has survived than previously thought possible. Although impacted by 250 years of urbanization and development, artifacts and features relating to the earliest European settlers have been identified in every location investigated. The discovery of these features provides hope that more evidence of the old French village remains to be found and preserved.

Este libro describe el trabajo realizado en el sitio arqueológico que se ubica detrás de la Casa de Gobierno, en donde funcionó entre los años 1857 y 1894 la Aduana Nueva, más conocida como Aduana Taylor, la cual constituyó el primer edificio público de gran envergadura y de características monumentales que tuvo la ciudad de Buenos Aires.
Una investigación histórica y documental exhaustiva al inicio del texto permite conocer que sucedió en el lugar donde primeramente funcionó el Fuerte de Buenos Aires y parte del cual fue reutilizado en la construcción de esta Aduana del siglo XIX, cuya estructura aún puede observarse hoy día.
Toda  su construcción, funcionamiento y demolición llegando hasta el momento actual en el que se erige allí el Museo de Casa Rosada, está narrado con la finalidad de contextualizar y poder comprender el trabajo arqueológico efectuado en el lugar entre los años 2009 y 2011, así como los hallazgos arqueológicos descubiertos. El piso original que tenía el patio de maniobras, los restos de un sistema de movilidad de mercaderías - desconocido por las fuentes históricas de la época y posteriores - junto con fragmentos y objetos de diferentes materiales, que son descriptos y analizados particularmente (lozas, gres, vidrio, metal, piedras para chispas, restos óseos, entre otros) constituyen solo algunos de los restos arqueológicos recuperados.
Estas páginas muestran asimismo como profesionales de la arqueología trabajan dentro de una obra de construcción moderna, de forma multidisciplinaria, teniendo un carácter de rescate pero con un fuerte componente de investigación. Dentro de la Arqueología Urbana Argentina se espera constituya un trabajo de referencia para todos aquellos que se abocan a esta especialidad, así como también para el público en general interesado en este tipo de información y relato.

"The article deals with analysis of medieval Novgorod by GIS techniques. Various source types - written (chronicles and city census), maps of 18-19th cc. and archaeological data - are evaluated from the point of their usefulness for GIS analysis. Map of chronological dynamics of city area occupation based on date of Novgorod archaeological excavation is provided.
Also provided map of distance from modern banks of Volkhov river. Earliest cultural deposits in Novgorod (10th c.) are situated within 100-300 meters range. Analysis of earliest deposits allows to propose that development of city area in 10th-11th cc was connected with communication routes (i.e. Volkhov river and several earlies roads).""

In 1997 werd in de Kraanstraat, in het noordwesten van de historische stadskern, archeologisch onderzoek uitgevoerd. Bij dit onderzoek zijn de resten teruggevonden van een 14e eeuwse kanunnikenwoning. Dit huis wordt later bekend als de Herberg van Thorn. Het perceel wordt in het begin van de 16de eeuw doorsneden door een nieuw aangelegde straat; de Kraanstraat.
Van dit gebouw zijn slechts schaarse resten teruggevonden, in tegenstelling tot het naastgelegen huis van Brecht dat ook een 14e eeuwse oorsprong had.

The book is a synthesis of archaeological work in the Belfast area, tracing human activity from the Mesolithic to the present day.

The most important sites in the city and surrounding area are described, and following an examination of the plentiful evidence for prehistoric activity four main phases of nucleated settlement identified, beginning with the Anglo-Norman settlement in the 13th century.

One site is chosen from each chronological period for more detailed analysis.  These are: The Giant's Ring, Shankill Church and Graveyard, the three castles that once stood in Belfast city centre, the late 17th century 'Potthouse' (pottery) and the Ballymacarrett Glassworks.
There are full references in the text to each site discussed .  An appendix listing excavations carried out in and around Belfast and a detailed archaeological bibliography of Belfast are provided at the end of the book.

The article introduces several finds from Duboshin-II site in medieval Novgorod. Cultural layersof Duboshin-II site reach about 9 meters thickness; 8 meters of them are waterlogged. Article describes 23 objects made of wood which considered to be mirror frames. Publication contains information on their sizes and wood species.

At its peak New Baily prison was the largest jail in England. Its imposing Georgian buildings were designed on the basis of the progressive ideals in the 1780s. This article reviews three years of develop-funded archaeology that has uncovered the remains of the 1787-1871 prison in the heart of industrial Salford, England, UK. It shows how the prison struggled to adapt to the huge urban growth of Manchester and Salford in the early 19th century.

oleh Badan Pusat Statistik Kota Surakarta. Tujuan dari penerbitan ini adalah untuk
melengkapi informasi segala bentuk data dan perkembangan daerah yang diperlukan oleh
berbagai pihak.
Statistik Daerah Kota Surakarta 2016 ini menyajikan kondisi Perekonomian dan
Sosial Kota Surakarta secara sektoral dengan data dihimpun dari berbagai kegiatan serta
survei-survei yang dilakukan oleh BPS Kota Surakarta. Data yang ditampilkan disertai
dengan analisa sederhana dan grafik-grafik pada setiap pokok pembahasan.

Ujście, Piła i Jastrowie to miasta należące do staropolskiego starostwa ujsko-pilskiego, rozwijającego się od XIV wieku w oparciu o ukształtowaną w poprzednich stuleciach kasztelanię ujską. Pograniczne rubieże Korony charakteryzowały się niespokojną sytuacją polityczną, rozrzedzoną strukturą osadnictwa i dużym udziałem gospodarki leśnej.

Każde z miast starostwa uległo licznym przekształceniom; wnioski o rytmie przemian urbanistycznych możemy wyprowadzać w oparciu o analizę nielicznie zachowanych źródeł historycznych i kartograficznych oraz ostrożnie podejmowaną interpretację istniejących układów przestrzennych. Uzupełniający charakter w analizach mają prace archeologiczne, których wyniki uzupełniają dane archiwalne. Dzisiejszy "Stary Rynek" w Ujściu wraz z przyległymi ulicami jako przestrzeń miejska został zorganizowany dopiero na przełomie XVIII i XIX wieku, wcześniej stanowiąc teren grodu kasztelańskiego oraz starościńskiej siedziby z zapleczem i towarzyszącym mu przedmieściem. Nadzory prowadzone w Pile potwierdziły intensywność późnośredniowiecznego osadnictwa w rejonie nieistniejącego już Starego Rynku, wprowadziły również nowe fakty do wiedzy o nowożytnej przestrzeni sepulkralnej. Potwierdzony został również przebieg dawnej przeprawy przez rzekę, szczególnie istotny dla zrozumienia topografii lokacyjnego miasta, pojawiły się nowe dane co do początków miasta i jego przedlokacyjnego rozwoju. Wciąż otwarte pozostają dzieje przestrzeni miejskiej Jastrowia, nierozpoznanej archeologicznie ani archiwalnie, mimo obfitych zasobów źródłowych przechowywanych w Archiwum Państwowym w Szczecinie.

Temat podjęty został w ramach projektu "Ratusz i rynek w przestrzeni miast Prowincji Wielkopolskiej w świetle badań archeologicznych", realizowanego przez Autora od 2015 r. w Instytucie Archeologii Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego pod opieką prof.. dr hab. Anny Marciniak-Kajzer. Jest on finansowany przez Ministerstwo Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego w ramach programu "Diamentowy Grant".

Until 1993 there were conducted first excavations in what promised to be the site of one of the most important buildings of Petra, the stunning capital of the Nabataean kingdom. Its construction, whose initiation century BC, several changes, reconstructions and landslides along its more than five hundred years of operation. But despite this still unknown for certain functions for which it was designed and that, regardless of the construction elements, materials have been located just still less inscriptions that shed some light on a mystery that will try here exhibit various theories that enable closer to resolution.

I Ribes gader er der siden 1984 foretaget systematiske arkæologiske undersøgelser i forbindelse med gaderenoveringer, hvor også rørføringerne under gaden er blevet udskiftet. I 2004 blev Sønderportsgade renoveret, og det er resultaterne af de arkæologiske undersøgelser i den forbindelse, der her fremlægges. Det kunne påvises, at gadeforløbet uden væsentlige forskydninger går tilbage til o. år 1100, og op igennem
middelalderen må have fungeret som en af byens hovedtrafikårer. Der blev undersøgt gadebelægningeraf knogler, fletværksmåtter, planker og piksten, og fra de tykke opfyldslag mellem gadebelægningerne stammer mere end 8000 fund heriblandt flere unika. De mange fund fremkom for en stor dels vedkommendeved vandsoldning af kulturlagene.

"Spatial modelling of an ancient urban network : the towns in the city territory of Nîmes".
One of the most sensitive questions faced by archaeologists when studying ancient urban networks concerns hierarchical relationships within them; however, it is extremely important to identify the rank of each town within its network in order to be able to simulate its spatial interactions with all the other towns and the region.
After several experiments, first with the apparent functions and impacts of the towns around Bordeaux, then in the territory of the city of Luteva (Lodève) with only the ground coverage of each settlement, it appeared useful to test a multiple criteria classification of the 34 ancient towns administered by Nemausus (Nîmes). We therefore carried out a study of the network and of the region in order to describe the population structure, in terms of accessibility, centrality and spatial interactions.

The ‘Roman Galleries” at Rua da Prata are one of the most emblematic monuments of the Roman Period discovered in the downtown area during the reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. The archaeological excavation inside some of the 18th century buildings allowed us to find related evidence, such as the remains of the cryptoporticus riverfront boundary wall, marble floorings, water tanks, drains, cloacae and a hypocaustum that confirm the 1859’s interpretation. The architectural remains are related to a monumental public port thermae built in the middle/ 2nd half of the 1st century A.D.
A great number of proceedings are to be undertaken to turn the roman cryptoporticus of Lisbon into a monument permanently open to the public in a safe, inclusive way that will lead to the opening of a new entrance and an area of interpretation. The new entrance will be open at the basement of an 18th century building, whose reconstruction back in 1913 damaged part of the monument. A past attack on heritage became an access opportunity in the present.

Uit archeologisch onderzoek blijkt dat pottenbakkers in Utrecht buitenpottenbakkers waren: ze werkten en woonden buiten de stadsmuren. Van 1275 tot 1350 waren (minimaal) zes pottenbakkerwerkplaatsen gevestigd in de noordelijke voorstad. Dit gebied stond sinds haar ommuring rond 1350 bekend als de Bemuurde Weerd. Rond 1400 - de aanvangsdatum is discutabel - waren pottenbakkers in het verder van de stad gelegen Hogelanden actief. Tot nu toe werd aangenomen dat in 1398 het Utrechtse stadsbestuur de pottenbakkers uit de Bemuurde Weerd had verbannen, vanwege brandgevaar. In dit artikel wordt het verdwijnen van de pottenbakkersindustrie in de noordelijke
voorstad, die niet pas in 1398 maar al rond 1350 plaatsvond, in verband gebracht met het feit dat de voorstad juist in deze
periode een juridische transformatie doormaakte.
Dit kan de introductie van een heffing op brandstof
(turf) met zich mee hebben gebracht. Het vertrek van de pottenbakkers uit de Bemuurde Weerd is mogelijk een
‘collectieve belastingvlucht’.

Excavations conducted by the Society for Libyan Studies since 1999 at the Greek city of Euesperides (Benghazi, Libya), directed by Paul Bennett, Ahmed Buzaian and Andrew Wilson, have been investigating evidence for purple dye production from Murex trunculus shellfish. Numerous spreads of crushed shell waste have been recorded, and one of these has been excavated. Two phases of dye production activity were revealed, both dating to the first half of the third century B.C. Dye preparation had taken place over large mud brick hearth surfaces in the courtyard of a former house. There was little trace of permanent infrastructure apart from the hearth surfaces, and the archaeologically diagnostic features of this production are large deposits of crushed Murex shell and ash. It is likely that the dyestuff was heated in portable vessels (probably metal) mounted on stands or tripods over the hearths; the crushed shell was dumped among the embers of the fires afterwards. No built vats or tanks were found.
Studies on the shell species and breakage patterns by Estíbaliz Tébar Megías provide insights into the methods used for collecting and preparing the Murex shells, and forms the basis for a preliminary quantification of production. It is likely that the manufacture of purple dye at Euesperides was linked also to wool production; and that wool or textiles were among the goods exported in return for the large amount of imported trade goods found at the site.
